I believe the Ram is plastic right now. We are trying to convert to glass. I’m not as close to interior vehicles as my main focus is windshields, side windows and roofs. We are gaining traction though as people are fed up paying $60k for a vehicle and getting plastics or subpar glass

I have no doubt an aftermarket solution would be roughly 2500 or so, so maybe half of an OE unit, but still pricey

The problem is that Panasonic, the oem for the infotainment unit, designed the screen that exposes the entire weak edge around the entire perimeter of the unit.

I looked closely at the whole component, and where the plastic surrounds it, which also forms the grill over the air vent, I can see the entire edge, fully exposed to potential damage.

What should have been done is the plastic should have fit 3 or 4 mm over the edge of the bezel and there should be a sealant along the whole perimiter to protect the weakest point of failure from grime and debris. This is what I think caused the issue, there was dirt from an off roading trip between the glass edge.

Honestly, the fact that the display is not sealed beyond adhesive from the elements means that water and all sorts of crud can make its way behind the screen. I expect over the next few years people will be complaining about dust in their screen at the best when the adhesive breaks down.

I have another issue with this Toyota where the lane centering will just lose the lock mid turn and not warn me with audio ding to take the wheel. So I'm just driving down the road with my hand on the wheel allowing lane centering to do most of the adjustments, and if the turn is a sweeping turn it just stops, sending me into on coming traffic if I wasn't
This means I have to be constantly glancing at the MID for the blue lane lock Indicator to disappear or just assume I have to take full controll when a turn comes up.
If it wasn't designed to lane center in a sweeping turn, that sucks but understandable. However the fact that there is NO warning scares the hell out of me.

So I have a dealer visit scheduled next Wednesday for the EBP recall, this lane centering issue, and I'm having them look at the screen now that I know it's a design flaw.

    @Lake.Life24
I appreciate your offer, however logistics up here in Alaska may be difficult. I'll keep an ear open still.

Interesting. It looks like glass on the Ram…so a clear plastic screen can be had.

The one on my truck works good and it’s so dirty. I really need to do a full detail. 6 years old.

I also have the same problem with the lane centering. If the line fades out, or there’s a sharp corner, or the lane markings change in any way the lane centering loses its mind, the truck yells at me, I yell back. I just turn it off and don’t mess with it. It’s too aggravating

My problem is it does not yell at all when it loses lock in this particular circumstance. It starts to turn into the sweeping turn, and then just let's Jesus take the wheel

The screen is poorly designed in a way that makes it easy to deny a warranty claim because the cause can easily be blamed on the customer and not on the engineering manager who approved such a crappy design

My xyz broke when I got out of the car.
Well you shouldn't have done that.
Xyz should be durable enough to withstand abuse, it's a truck, not a show car
Warranty Claim denied, customer admitted to abusing the vehicle.

We will see on Wednesday, but I am sure Toyota won't be ready to admit a 5k part was designed poorly until thousands start complaining.

If they replace it, that's great. But it is bound to happen again because the glass edge is exposed. Any phone or tablet will put an extremely tight tolerance against or over the screen edge for this exact reason.

My rant is because the design on essentially a 5000 tablet doesn't stand up to a 800 tablet design.

I feel you. I had a stupid expensive microwave with a shit design. The glass was bolted to the hinges. After it shattered 2 or three times, I replaced the glass with aluminum and a cut out for the window, bought a custom cut piece of glass and glued it in the viewing hole. Never failed again, but WTH?

The Ram screen is glass. It is the typical Soda lime glass construction. We can't offer a replacement glass due to liability concerns....stupid lawyers.

Sounds like that is the way manufacturers are going. Bummer

He’s what I don’t understand or do I. That problem you have also happens to my wife’s 2020 Lexus. So either, why hasn’t Toyota updated this feature or they have but it’s going to be held for a future upgrade. Manufacturers do this crap to make it seem like you’re getting something new when in fact it’s not. The Tacoma didn’t get power seats till 2020, are you serious Toyota.

Just checked. Lexus gets Saftey sense 3.0 while the tundra gets 2.5. I can guarantee you that on the next redo in a couple of years they will add 3.0 and say it’s all new.
