Just went through this issue with/ for my kid too. Some dealers still playing games with ‘used’ ‘22 cars showing 3k on odometer charging over msrp. Even on a Hyundai venue! Wound up going brand new veh. Didn’t wanna pay new car prices but definitely didn’t wanna pay the same or more than that for used!

Your kids are getting cars that are too new. My first car was a Civic that was 10 years old at the time and I paid for it myself.

My first 3 cars were old pieces of crap! I’m a believer in work to earn the privilege, but Even 8 yr old cars in my area with mid-high mileage for their age are only several grand less than new econobox. The used car price bubble is bursting so it’s just a better investment to go new now, trust me it wasn’t my first choice for our budget. But for us the math made more sense this way in the long run.

I keep hearing the car price bubble is bursting, lowering, etc. it sure isnt around here.

I had to buy a cargo van yesterday and it was used 2021 with 11K, and went for 62 when MSRP was 46K.

You're not kidding. This is the only used Toyota car within about 200 miles of me that I'd even consider. I'm willing to bet the dealer paid a max of $5k to get it, though.

I agree I don’t think it’s hit the street yet, but anecdotaly I see more used cars sitting on lots, so as more people keep buying new instead, more used keep arriving & don’t seem to be moving as fast- only those in urgent need - which I almost was for the kid so took a new arrival off a lot.

Here in my area, the 10 year old cars are too expensive, especially compared to a few years ago.

I'm a firm believer in an older used car for beginner driver too, but I just can't pay $10k for a 2010 Civic with 130k miles. That would've been a $5k max vehicle had there not been a pandemic. That's basically double what the car is worth.

As you get closer to newer, the pandemic tax starts to relatively decline. Instead of being 200% of value, we get closer to something like 125% of value.

Anyway, I think things are beginning to turn around. I am seeing much more realistic prices, good cars under $5k are beginning to become more common on CL. I just found a super nice Honda Element in my neighborhood for $6k, AWD and very clean, it'd probably be a great first car.

ya, I had no choice, not a lot of selection when you need something for business, it would have cost more to not buy it, sucks the market is like this.

the cargo van market is worse than the car and truck market, wow, you can't find them anywhere if you need some specifics, (high roof, shorter wheelbase, etc)

oh well, Im pretending like that didnt just happen, lol, move on

I've been watching vehicle prices on CarGurus for a couple months, particularly Sequoias and LXs. Everything is coming down that I'm looking at. If trends continue, they might even be reasonable in the next 5-6 months. If not, I'll probably just buy by then anyway. I need to replace the Yukon, but it isn't urgent at the moment.

well the 2022 Tundra 14 inch I phone display screen costs more to replace.
Parts guys told me $6000 cdn. plus tax if it gets scratched.
    Just saying.

There is a thread on it here and it got me curious.

this makes more sense if looking for a corolla.

I’ve owned Tundra, Tundra, F150, and now Tundra. The F-150 is an excellent design with wonderful functionality, but their component quality is terrible. You will spend $2,000 a year in parts and labor to keep it on the road.

I noticed quite a few of my friends at work who owned one of the big 3, had "weekend hobbies" with their trucks. They were either under the truck or under the hood, just to keep it going for work Monday morning!:D

I wager 100 Canadian loonies - now worth 75 US dollars and dropping - that nobody with a new Ford F150 or Tundra will spend anytime under the hood except to add windshield washer fluid.
They will spend no time under the truck unless they are modding it and watching their mechanic do the work.
The questions that remain - of the Ford and Toyota service departments, who has the fastest internet speed, the best coffee, the best loaner vehicles.
No one is keeping these trucks past warranty.
if your Tundra has a 14 inch screen and is in for service, make sure the guy that welcomes you and does a walk a round when admitting your vehicle takes a picture of the screen, just in case you get the Tundra back and there is a scratch or crack in it. See previous post.

My friend just purchased a used 2021 F150 Lariat for 73,000$ plus tax here in Ottawa. New F150 Lariat is now close to 100,000$ CAD.. Apparently F150 price went up many times this year.

I cannot believe it! Ford 150 was always an "employee discount" truck that you could get for under 50,000$ at the end of the year... Today, the cheapest XLT is around 75,000$ plus tax.. Lariat is close to a 100K

I wonder if Toyota will also increase Tundra 2023 price?

Did not see 2023 price announcement.. We will see. No one knows for sure.

So far all other manufacturers had massive price increases.. With 10% official inflation and 20% unofficial.. Highly likely it will go up even more...

They can raise prices all they want.
What will be interesting to see is what happens in the next 3-6 months as rates keep going up - US Fed next week - and the economy slows further.
Did you see what happened to Fedex stock on Friday? That's a really good barometer of the economy. IMO.

What actual percentage of people buy new trucks with cash ?
I would think most Finance especially with the former Pandemic era interest rates before the rate hikes started.
Pre-qualified low rates have been supporting the vehicle business same as housing with mortgages.
Those qualified rates before the rate increases started, have now expired or will be expiring soon.
This means buyers qualifying today are at today's rates. Whether you are buying a $70k truck or a house.

I predict Vehicles especially expensive trucks will mirror Housing.
Affordability will or has already become so bad or ridiculous, that the demand drops, supply will get better, and...
we will see trucks on lots again - not just RAM - and this will be followed by discounts again.

I’ve heard the car market correction has been coming for over a year. 2.9-3.9 isn’t that expensive to finance

Focusing on one aspect, a published car rate is "micro" thinking
We need to look at this at a "macro" view.
    I gave the Fedex example.
    Another example.
It starts getting expensive when your mortgage has triggered. Like many mortgages have or will have soon.
If Robert Smith needs to get rid of his new F150 or Tundra and be forced to buy and drive an older Chevy pickup to keep his house....
Good God Imagine having to do that ..... well he will do it.
    Why ?
Because people care more about their house and keeping it than their vehicle.

Besides ...the rates you quote are within the range of what the actual US fed rate will be at next week.
If a dealer is advertising low rates, there is a beefed up price in the vehicle.
    Nothing is for free.
At least we know we are at MSRP in Canada.
But hell - Canada Australia and New Zealand are the worlds biggest housing bubbles bursting as we speak.

100% in my house. Interest rates don't matter when you save and pay cash. 9/125 warranty means we'll be keeping her for a long while.

Very rare thing in Ontario. Average house price is around a million. Ppl buy houses with 30 year mortgages averaging 4,000$ monthly.. Add property tax, utilities, and you are over 5,000$ monthly before adding all major expenses (food, internet, clothing, etc.) Not that many ppl have 80,000$ on a checking account...

I hear ya. I live in the SF Bay Area. Same housing costs. I’m sure most other things are very similar. I find people buy too much house and don’t plan for normal living expenses.
I’m fortunate enough to have paid off my home.

overall people need to buy less house and less car. You can buy a tundra for 47k. You don’t have to have the 80k version.
