Cracked navigation screen. Five thousand dollar part?!

I haven't even made the first payment on my new tundra and the navigation screen cracked somehow this morning, its the first time its been cold this year and the crack are from the top to the bottom! I always hated the concept of these infotainment systems that essentially turn a $60,000 car into a disposable iPhone, I needed a truck and there were no long bed options available used so I decided to spoil myself.

I'm now extremely angry with both myself, all car manufactures, and in particular Toyota for putting the weakest, most pathetic glass on what I now know to be a Five thousand plus dollar part. For the whole assembly. Why could they not put a plastic screen that would at worst scratch? I even bought a screen protector I installed Monday, but if the glass underneath isn't strong scratches are the least of my worries.

Toyota doesn't even part the screen as a separate component, the entire Infotainment is a single unit. I know there's nothing to be done and I will just have to live with the damage for the next 10 years. So all I'm doing is screaming into the wind, no need to reply unless there's some alternative, because I'm not spending $5grand for a $500 tablet screen.

wait a year, I'm sure there will be used or replacement parts for it.

 

Could this be a warranty claim? Like if the composite bed was brittle and snapped under reasonable use I would hope that would also qualify as a warranty claim.

I've never bought a new car before, so I've never dealt with a warranty claim. I just know that if the screen on my phone broke under an identicle scenario it would be a warranty repair.
For the record I've hit my phone screen even harder and there wasn't even a scratch. Im So upset about this

1000% agree!! Won’t know unless you try. Bad Sh#% happens to us all my friend and it’s how you respond and get Thru it that determines what kind of person you will be. At least you (like me, both of us new members) have found this forum full of good people wanting to help others as much as they can and if not physically/financially then at least emotionally. Good luck and man just reading this made me upset for you. Wish I could do more than some encouraging words……fingers crossed they warranty it for you!!

Please keep us updated and let us know if the dealership warrantied it.

Not saying that was said in the literal sense but these screens need to be able to withstand normal use. My guess is the screen didn't have the proper polished edge and something as simple as temperature change would have started a crack. Is the crack a spiderweb type crack? If so you may have a harder time getting it replaced under warranty.

 

It seems manufacturers are more worried about the cool kids instead of men that really need a truck. Like some have said, take it to the dealer and just say it cracked. Worth a try. I would even tell how, just that it cracked. No your fault it’s an inferior product.

 

First thing I did was put on a glass screen protector for the same reason you outlined. If you live with the crack let it sit for a year and let the prices come down.

 

Sorry this happened, I’m sure you felt sick about it. On the new trucks, are the features so ingrained into the OEM stereo that an aftermarket solution isn’t feasible? For instance, my aftermarket kenwood carplay headunit works flawlessly compared to my OEM one in basically every way. Will there/is there yet an aftermarket option for a new stereo and dash kit on the 3rd gens? It could be a more affordable option in the future to go aftermarket is all I’m saying. Other than that, I’d try and get it repaired under warranty.

 

Try contacting companies which specialize in 'OCA lamination' and see if they can source/install new glass. There likely aren't aftermarket tempered replacements, but it may be possible that they have suppliers which can cut and process.

 

You didn't "tap" your watch against the screen and damage it beyond repair.

 

You can wait a few months or more...I'm sure there may be some wrecked ones that will be parted out sooner or later.

 

This wasn't caused by your watch, right? *wink* You were driving down the road and went over a small speed bump, and the next thing you know your screen is cracked. *wink* *wink* Sounds like a warranty claim to me.

100% It cracked when you were driving. The dealer has to prove that it was damaged by an outside influence to not cover under warranty. I worked as a warranty admin for a long time. If the dealer can not prove outside influence its Warranty.

 

Just don’t let your dealer read this thread.

 

Warranty fraud. Yes. Insurance fraud? How? Call your insurance and tell them what happened. They cover or don’t. Hardly insurance fraud.

 

Maybe reach out to United Radio in Syracuse NY? They repair electronics and head units for auto OEMs. They might not be able to help you yet, but maybe in the future.

I’m actually very surprised Toyota used glass and not plastic. Plastic is stupid cheap and works well on large flat displays. Curved displays is where glass shines.

The glass they probably used is a non strengthened soda lime glass. This glass usually costs about $0.20/ft2. And frankly, is trash. I’m sorry they make you buy an entire new unit. We make a chemically strengthened glass that goes into car displays. Toyota is a brand that eludes us. Let me chat with our technical engineer and see if we can’t use this as an opportunity to fix your screen and demonstrate to Toyota that our glass should be used.

Have you seen how the 14” screen integrates? I highly doubt an aftermarket solution is a viable answer with the big screen. The upper frame is moulded into the dash, so the aftermarket option would have to be a 14” screen with a bezel/surround to match.
