If a dealership feels it necessary to look into your ECU, and you've preemptively "removed" a tune, what makes you think they won't know you've flashed the ECU previously?

Most ECUs have non-resettable flash counters. Everytime flash is counted.

It's why JB4 became so popular once ECUs gained flash counters

 

Jb4 has one available now for the 2022 tundra for those concerned with that. I really like the idea of using toyotas factory sr5 tune since the truck is new. I've never had a warranty issue with a toyota vehicle and I never sucker into the extended warranty stuff. You are basically paying for repairs up front. I'm probably 15k ahead in my lifetime on money saved by not getting the warranties. I'll post and let the group know after I retune mine.

 

I will likely use another computer out of a wrecked sr5 and program it to truck as soon as the software is updated in my analyzer.

No disrespect but I don't think you know how it works. Everyone knocks the SR because its detuned but to put things into perspective even the SR truck comes with 30 more ft/lbs torque than a 2022 silverado 5.3 which has a 10-11k tow rating. The main thing to note is that warranty or no warranty the truck is physically the same and can be tuned to the same more hp as any other tundra trim level.

 

So, you are saying that you can swap ECUs, easy peasy?

Because that hasn't been my experience with modern vehicles. Depending on the manufacturer, recent vehicles have become very difficult to ECU or even BCM swap.

Unless you have software that can somehow overcome the encryption Toyota is using?

In typical modern vehicles, the ECU, BCM, guage cluster, keyless modules, door modules, etc. All need to be registered together. Something usually only a dealership has security privileges for.

That's my question to you, if you feel that you should remove a tune, how do you know they can't see the counters? Are Toyota's still easy to mess with?

Personally, I don't think a dealership is too likely to look at what tune you have on your ECU, however my point is if they feel like looking, they will know. Even if you go down the path of module swapping.

I'd personally do JB4 during warranty, then do a SR5 or "stage 1" ECU tune post-warranty.

Prices are coming down. Found a base SR crewmax 2WD for $1500 under msrp. No funny business. No crap fees to offset. Just a $299 dealer doc fee and that’s it. Obviously any vehicle requires state fees (taxes, title, etc) so I’m not including that. That’s gotta be paid on anything you buy.

Ah... I never even thought about going that route. I like the chrome grille, but not the 1794 price tag.
Did you get the grille from a person selling their chrome? Or did you buy the parts new from the dealer?
If from the dealer; Would you share part numbers and price estimates?

 

I haven't seen a SR during my search in the Pacific NW, lowest trim I've seen is base SR5 2WD, which seems strange for our region.

Doesn't the SR have a dash pocket on the passenger side that other trims don't have? I like the all black interior better. Aside from lower power output and smaller fuel tank, the only issue here is that we never get them.

I also think that the PNW market has to endure some of the highest markups, it's more beneficial to the dealer in this market to apply markups to more expensive models....more money all the way around.

 

@Big Baker I bought them from someone who took them off. I bought all his parts for a few hundred bucks and then found the wheels for about 800. I can get the part numbers for you

I'm trading in my 2 door base bronco tomorrow for a SR crewmax 4x4 in MGM. They offered me 45k (paid 31k). the tundra is 46k out the door. It was a deal I couldn't pass up. A 2 door is rough with 2 kids still in a car seat. I'm excited get back in a truck. This will be my first Toyota.

 

Anyone can help me look for a crewmax shortbed 4wd in Houston area?

Been shopping around for a few months now and no luck. A couple different dealers have them here but they’re either selling to fleet buyers or want me to pay a markup for an allocation.

 

Just picked up a 2WD crewcab and would like to lift the front about an inch without having to use strut spacers.

would buying a used set of 4x4 front struts accomplish this? Anyone know if the TRD setup is over one inch from a stock 4x2? TIA

I'd be careful with the SR. Toyota won't say all the part differences underneath. Probably has smaller weaker drivetrain parts like the axles or diffs. I wouldn't buy it until someone can tell me the exact part differences other than just the computer code and looks. They didn't pull this crap in the 21 SR. That one was perfect now they've chewed it up.

 

Probably not unless it’s off a TRD pro. And even then it’ll only be an inch in the front.

When I was shopping, the shocks and axles were the exact same for both SR and base SR5 trims.

 

Same, looked very closely at the part numbers for the differing trims. Wanted to start with a base truck and build from there with oem parts.

No Trans cooler is what I was told is the only difference besides the detuned engine

 

I have an SR too but there are more differences to include: grille shutters, air dam, trans cooler, fog lights, drives modes and tow haul. Now I don’t know if those differences are relevant or not lol.

 

Is that for the 2022 or earlier?

 

Blows my mind that the myth of a modern vehicle, especially a truck, wouldn't have a transmission cooler, persists.

Almost every vehicle I have worked on has a transmission cooler if it's an automatic. Even a lowly 1993 Honda Civic DX automatic has one.

If, what people mean, is an external cooler separate from the radiator, y'all should be more clear.

Because most vehicles have their transmission cooler integrated into the radiator, a few my have both integrated and external, and a few may have only external.

The way traditional geared automatics operate, they wouldn't last long without a cooler of some sort
