It's really true. Rarely, if ever is a tundra brought up unless I bring it up.

Also on the Tundra forum "We have 4.30 gears so its fine to pull 11000000 lbs! But never actually looked at the transmission ratios to see that our overall reduction is worse than an F150 with 3.55's!"

I think with the demise of heavily field tested V8s and the last generation of transmissions that accompanied them the days of specific half ton powertrain combos having reputations for going 200k on only oil changes are over. I will watch reliability data in the next few years to see if I am proven wrong. I may well buy the truck that proves me wrong next. Otherwise a minimum of about 5 years payment free per truck and 10 years ownership before collecting my chips off the table and moving on seems reasonable going forward.

Except now the average car on the road is the oldest its ever been. And

Also, what resale values are you looking at. Year for year, trim for trim, miles for miles, a Tundra and F150 look pretty damn close.

It’s old. At least until this year it was. People have been conditioned to trade in frequently and buy based on appearance or neat features, not long term dependability and value retention. It’s like going to the iPhone 14 forums and saying, “you should buy the Nokia N95 (pretend that they still make them, but with an updated camera and texting abilities and very high value retention); it has been indestructible for years!” No one cares. They can finance the iPhone 14 or just buy it outright. They want the new shiny thing. Look at all the neat things it can do! People do not only want the new tech; they feel they are owed it when they drop the money.

The tech advances (which are planned and carefully controlled) rapidly outpace the ability of the phone to even use the network and apps. Long-term dependability be damned…Apple makes a new iPhone every year…why do I care about long-term ownership?

This same mentality has shifted to $45-80k (and even higher) trucks.

PS: I had to look up what iPhone we’re on…I thought it was 13, but nope already on 14 lol…
Good points. No one is keeping trucks for 5 years any more, let alone 10. Half tons are also becoming a payload issue for me. People want their half-ton to do everything and have every feature. Unless you’re getting a max trailering package from GM or a HDPP from Ford, you’re gonna be sitting at 1700lb or less in a crew cab 4x4.

A lot remains to be seen, but my next truck will most likely be a domestic gasser 3/4 ton. The Sierra 2500 can actually pull 15k lb because it won’t run out of payload due to the tongue weight (they’re rated at 3k+ lb in a crew cab 6.75’ bed configuration).

10 years is a long time though. I feel like in 10 years my needs and wants out of my vehicle could be very different today. And 10 years ago I was driving a 2 door, rwd, manual transmission Pontiac GTO which is slightly different than the F150, Lexus and 4Runner I own now.

People driving old cars are not even part of the picture here.

And before the pandemic and supply chain shortages, a Tundra and F150 did not retain similar resale values after the warranty period.

for me it was 95 Ranger bought in 99 to 04 Dakota Quad cab to 09 Tundra to 2021 f150 with a 2016 Challenger wandering into and out of my fleet somewhere in there. As my finances improved over the years I find myself in a better position with each new purchase to buy something as my main family hauler and utility vehicle that will Keep me happier for longer.

I’d have kept my Challenger for 10-plus years instead of selling at 5. But I wanted to go back to registering and maintaining one vehicle for awhile and needed a new deck more than I needed a stickshift muscle car my wife can’t drive and I only got to drive a few miles per week.

Its old, its MPG suck, its not interesting, it being outperformed real world by even the 5.3L GM V8 etc etc etc. If I have to drop 50k on a truck I want the most bang for my buck.

And, like I just said in my last post, 10 years is a long time. I feel like in 10 years my needs and wants out of my vehicle could be very different than today. And 10 years ago I was driving a 2 door, rwd, manual transmission Pontiac GTO which is slightly different than the F150, Lexus and 4Runner I own now. So I think its pretty reasonable to move between vehicles sometime in a 10 year span unless you are at the point in your life were things are not changing. I am 34. I bought my Lexus GX in early 2020 before my daughter was born. While my GX works, it clearly has its deficiencies already.

You seem, bitter or something. Like maybe life didn't go your way so you kind of shit on anyone who is doing better than you. I can't really put my finger on it, but something's going on. Maybe I'm inaccuratly reading between the lines though.

I do agree most people shouldn't be buying $70k trucks. In fact most people here probably shouldn't be buying $40k trucks, but what other's do with their money doesn't affect me one bit. So maybe don't lose sleep over it.

But not every truck is 100k.

An XL/Tradesman/SR/WT trim in any of the brands are still very cheap and are loaded up with tech, power, efficiency and comfort that would blow a fully loaded truck from 15 years ago out of the water.

The XL trim F150's are now coming with standard features that I had to move up to my 2014 Lariat to get. Honestly, with the exception of the dismal headlights, I could jump in an XL right now and be totally content.

Trucks are not 100k, but maybe trucks equipped the way some prefer approach 6 digits. My XLT Powerboost was 60 And change but versions of the CRew F150
Can be had in the mid or high 40s. People are mad 80k trucks they want cost 80k but
they are outfitted with equipment that makes them want them even at 80k because manufacturers put more
Features in for those of us who
    will pay.

    Nothing stops anybody from
Getting the SR with detuned V6 and cloth and ugly wheels.

Correct, the vast majority of trucks are not $100K or even approaching it. As usual people pick the low hanging fruit to try and drum up some unfounded discord.

Exactly. McDonald's sells more burgers than my grandmother but it doesn't mean theirs are better than hers.

My father in law is a Toyota fan. He's planning to keep his 2004 Corolla for at least a million miles. But he drives an F150 partially because his dad does (one from the mid 90s) and partially because a new 2011 F150 could be had for $30k CAD, while Toyota probably wanted $40k for a Tundra.

Suck is relative. 14 vs 17 combined isn’t life changing. And according to Edmunds just last year, it’s still the cheapest to own over 5 years comparably equipped due to the resale value and lack of repairs. So, it’s not so black and white that it’s a poor decision. Most bang for my buck is never having to deal with any issues, but y’all know that about me already.

Agreed regarding 10 years. Who knows? In my opinion, trustworthy vehicles will always be in demand.
Lol. What? Who have I shit on? Who is doing better than me? Losing sleep? Seriously? Just because I hate what the market has turned into and how vehicles are turning into smartphones on wheels that monitor our every move and sell data profiles to marketers?

Fully agreed regarding expensive vehicles. Most people shouldn’t be driving anything that requires 60 months to finance, let alone 84. Especially with the direction rates are going. There is a reckoning coming, especially regarding the expensive vehicles (recreational and otherwise) that people bought in the last couple of years. The direction repossessions are heading is not good.

It just occurred to me the other day that the car I parked in January 2020 when I got my truck and that I recently just got running again is now over 10 years old. So what? It has everything I need in a commuter car and some things you probably can't get in newer cars.

With plans to replace that transportation long before it's paid off and just keep rolling the loan forward. We've been conditioned to have never ending payments. Heck, I bet you can finance an iPhone for 84 months now (and pretty much have to given what they want for the new ones).

I totally choose my burger based on the net worth of the company or individual providing it, not the nutritional value it may (or may not) provide. McDonald’s food may be made out of the most durable polymers known to man (look at a fry that has been lost under a cabinet for 6 months, you’ll see what I mean), but dammit, I only stick with whoever sells the most.

I finance knowing the compounding effect of the capital gains and dividends I get off that money will outlast the loan by a lot even if the exact dollar figure advantage over the life of the loan is not much. I do know a guy who’s been through probably a dozen new cars in a few years Who’s happy with any deal that keeps his payment the same. I think that’s nuts.

Next one should be cash though. Probably be eligible to cash in my Roth by then. Haven’t been eligible to contribute in awhile so it will have grown to just about the right amount for a new truck by then, but not much more.

I don't know. Most people are pretty dumb.

But I haven't financed anything other than homes since 2015, and some would say that's dumb.

I agree that financing isn't necessarily bad but I'm not sure I'd want to finance for 7 years at 5.49%, to use Toyota's current numbers as an example, especially if, say, 3 years at 3%, for example, is an option.

    Yes, see the fine print.
I think that’s smart. I’m debt free with the exception of my mortgage, and I owe less than 25% of my home’s value.

Some people did ok spending others’ money for free (getting very low or 0% loans). That era of free money is over for the foreseeable future.

Same except 50% LTV, have only been here two years though. And the remaining balance is only a smidge over our annual gross.

But if you plan on keeping your truck forever like you keep arguing than who cares about resale value. Presumably, your 25 year old 500,000 mile Tundra isnt worth crap.

Seems kinda silly. Buys tundra because it last forever and has good resale value. Keeps tundra forever and argues with people about resale value.

Have you checked my signature for the cars i own? Only 1 is less than 10 years old and its 8.

I didnt say your cars need to be no older than 10, just that life changes and the car you just bought may not work for you in 10 years.
