What are “school hours” for a college student? They’re all over the map. These jobs aren’t meant for high schoolers only, they’re meant for college students, too, and definitely meant as transitional jobs only. Why on earth would we want to encourage anyone to stay put and make a career out of manning a deep fryer? We would literally be encouraging that person to develop zero skills in life, to not invest in their own capital in any way. This is the opposite of helpful to that person.
Agreed, the free market does say that $20 is too little for a job that requires the kind of investing in one’s own capital (schooling, specialized skills, experience) that the company needs. And it’s falling on the OP to pick up the slack. Again, if your job requires only a pulse—as dropping fries into a fryer and pulling them out when the fryer beeps at you does—it should not pay as much as an IT position. If it does, then great. More power to that fry cook. The IT company that pays the same or less than a fast food joint should suffer for not offering pay that attracts talent, and they are. They’ll continue to lose good people because of it, probably the OP included given enough time.

I’m as happy as you are for people to make more money. And I don’t see anyone as less than myself or others due to their income level. I also do not support a minimum wage, especially for jobs that require zero skills and are supposed to be temporary or transitional. These two previous statements are not in tension with one another.

This is another one that gets me... "We have to raise the minimum wage". Why is that? I don't know anyone working for minimum wage let alone any business hiring at minimum wage. I guess it must be a big city problem. If you posted a job starting at $9.25/hr here you'd be laughed out of the market, nobody would even apply. I think there are far better ways to force an employer to pay workers better and/or provide them with proper benefits.

A lot also depends where you live. $15/hr and you'd be OK in rural Kansas. Pick any major metro area and $15/hr doesn't cover a shithole apartment.

Perhaps my life experience is different. Where I grew up, Mom and Dad had a local business, so we knew most of the small town we lived in. There were more than a few of our customers that were low IQ. Most of them had jobs and worked hard to do the best they could, but they would never be able to advance beyond an entry level position. One guy wasn't physically able to do much due to physical (and mental) limitations, but the local Pepsi driver would pick him up and pay him a few bucks out of his own pocket to "help" him on the in town deliveries.

These are the people I think of. They can understand simple tasks/concepts, even manage their money. They are beneficial to the community. But they'll never be "skilled" labor. Do they not deserve an opportunity to earn their own way? Would you rather McDonalds pay them an extra $10k a year in wages ($5 an hour increase) or have the government support them?

How do you (general address to the forum, not directed specifically at you Godzilla) feel about Wal Mart coaching employees how to maximize government freebies so the company can skirt providing better pay and benefits?

if that's what an employer wants to do, I won't stop them. free market.

but those same employees better not complain about me making a bajillion dollars a year to sit on Tundras.com

OK guys, I'll let it go and stop badgering my point. Not sure why I've just felt like arguing this topic for some reason - I don't usually enjoy such debate. I have enjoyed the banter, whether we agree or disagree. :)

I guess I could've just said "Smash that Like button if you want me to just shut up already!"

Forced/imposed welfare removes charity from the hearts of man. Why would I help my neighbor? It's his company's job to pay him a "living wage" or the guberment's job to take care of him.

As I succeed and am blessed I share and help as I can. That is how it should work, but if everyone is told there's a safety net for the less fortunate, they stop caring at an individual level. Treat people like people, help your neighbor, a village to raise a child, etc. are all being replaced with "you're owed", "it's not your fault", "you're just fine the way you are", etc. Bullshit. You're not owed, you are where you are because of choices you've made, and you're not fine; you can and should improve.

Companies get to run however they see fit, and if people don't like it they'll quit, the company will fold, and somebody else will replace them. It's like a pencil factory. Sure, the pencil factory wouldn't produce the pencil without the worker making the bare minimum, but if the company goes under the worker isn't out anything but a job that pays the bare minimum. They'll get another. You know who is out? The company/investor/mean awful rich person who took on all the risk, fronted the funds, the tax liability, built the network to supply the product, etc. and as he has the most risk why should he not get the most benefit from that pencil factory?

If the total wealth of the nation was pooled and divided evenly amongst everyone, within 5 years we would once again have rich, middle, and poor. Who was in which position may shuffle a bit, but the system would be just what it is now. Some are willing or able to work more/harder, some have ideas, some have ambition, and some don't.

    Great thread and civil.

As far OP is concerned, sounds like your municipality is behind the times on wages. With all the red tape involved with increasing them, their hands are tied, sort of.

My 2¢, regarding work/career/ jobs in general.....

Aquire whatever skillz, certz you need, foster your network and hang your own shingle so to speak. Has worked for me.

Self motivation and discipline are key. Being process oriented doesn't hurt either.

No easy answers/ paths these days. Be flexible I guess.

    It's clown world .....

Your “would you rather” is two versions of the same thing. I’d rather McDonald’s make it’s own decisions and either suffer the consequences or thrive accordingly. At this point, they have been forced to raise wages how many times over the years? And how many people work in these positions? It’s a skeleton crew with kiosks now. FAR fewer people are employed keeping each location running. This is a direct result of the forced wage increases.

No one deserves anything that requires the time/effort/money of someone else. When I start talking about things I deserve, it involves others doing things for me. I do not support forcing others to do something for someone else’s benefit.
Seems like somebody doesn’t know anything about the boutique pencil market. It’s crazy. And I’m totally hooked.

It's IT. Hire a couple jr. high 'interns' to work nights and weekends. Tell em what you want and let em ticktock or whatever. The more you pay, the more they'll care. Weed out the slackers.

That's not at all what my post implied, and I know you are more than smart enough to know that. I'm slightly disappointed to see you take this angle, as you know that isn't applicable. Voluntary charity is one thing, and I wholeheartedly support it. Anyone who wants to give to Ukraine, go for it, but mandating that companies start donating to it? That's different. Lots of people need help, but making it compulsory makes people stop doing it voluntarily, and voluntary charity always helps more than forced.

No one. Not sure why you made that inference.

My point was I don’t support minimum wage, and that doesn’t mean that I think the people who occupy minimum wage jobs are any “less” than myself. That’s a non sequitur. I would argue that incentivizing them to stay there is actually indicative of thinking that they are not capable of more.
Great. What’s the problem? I’d love to convince you all to give to the same causes I give to, but I’m not going to petition that it be made mandatory. That’s as far as I’ll go on that topic.

I was speaking to the pay imbalance that you noted between an unskilled position and one that requires schooling/skills/experience, not implying that you think it ought to pay the same.
