Where is a welder $450 per hour and how do I get that job? Running your own rig here is $95 - $110 per hour and you need to supply everything (rods, discs, gas, insurance) from that.

That rate is for quality American welders. Not backwater outposts in other areas of the globe.

Whatever this forum told me to do
who are we to decide what the free market pays?

would it not be a free market?

not a single person is entitled to a wage.

    it must be earned.

and yes, I think minimum wage = ZERO.

unless you are on Welfare....another story, for another time.

Back to the point of the thread. The free market says 20 dollars an hour is way too low for what he’s seeking. All the rest of this is just digression from that point.
It comes across that people don’t think fast food workers deserve what is considered low for most other jobs. If the free market is causing unskilled people to make more money, why is everyone outraged?

Maybe you’re not, but it’s a pretty common complaint in society. I’m happy for someone if they get paid more. Don’t understand why it bothers others.
Im not advocating for government mandates making private companies pay more. I just don’t see these people as less than myself. I think too many people do and that’s my issue.
And welfare is way down my list of government waste that I’m going to complain about.

Heck. I get out of bed and drive a mile and a half to make $12.50/hr and am perfectly happy with it. But then again, I have absolutely nothing else to do and it is all extra $ on top of my salary for sitting on my *** all day.

I went to college with the goal of finding a job that paid ok and in demand. Since I knew people coming back from Vietnam in a box, I stayed the course and worked at it. It was not easy but I could do it. Ended up in engineering and found a job. I went from minimum wage job to an entry pay. I have nothing against a military career but it was not my choice back then.

Fast forward 20 years into my career, I was asked to take on a position supporting a military project, and I did, which like another guy said, make your boss look good. It helped in my overall resume to support being put in higher demand positions at the company. Yeah, a lot of my work was a PIA, but needed to be done. I ended up being able to invent some new test equipment that was used, which made me feel good. I ended up with 39 patents, but gave a lot of good ideas to others and let them go for it.

Being retired now, my engineering is history. I’m just the old guy who lives down the street, no titles. I like it.

I got a chuckle about getting a harbor freight welder. I got the Titanium series, where I can do MIG welding 120/240v. I did that a few years ago, to play around with and fix/ repair things around the house. I self taught myself along with YouTube videos and trial and error. Fun.

I think as long as you have some Fun in your job, it’s a win and hopefully long life.

Funny enough I'm currently leaving my job......for one that pays more money, but we pay new grads ~70k a year to do IT helpdesk work remotely. I'm not super familiar with the cost of living in AZ, but you're also competing with more remote roles these days.

Couple of years forward: "F*ck this job, I don't see my family and don't spend any time with them in my $2M bungalow. What I see is planes, airports with endless security checks, 2hr one way commute out of Boston Logan, just to get through the tunnel under the Harbor, and a small stinky hotel room. I'm getting a $150/hr job near my home, now that I can put a Fancy Big Project in my CV. Maybe I'll sell that $2M fancy bungalow as well and buy something more appropriate, now that I know I hate $2M oversized tasteless bungalows" ;)

Which would certainly be the end goal. Deal with the shit, live in lousy places and bank that money. I did it for $30 per hour to get ahead. I'd deal with some pretty nasty conditions for $450 per hour.

Flipping burgers and running the register. How much of McDonald's sales are directly affected by those two positions? ALL of their sales rely on these two positions within the store, but yet they are lowlife scum who are not worthy of fair pay? Interesting. I will admit though, "HS kid jobs" does sound better than "rich adults exploiting cheap child labor for fat profits".

I'd be more inclined to agree with your argument if you'd used corporate office janitors as the example. These positions make the company exactly $0, and surely all those smart, skilled people can figure out how to clean up after themselves for free. There could be a rotating schedule for sanitizing the restrooms.

McDonald's already has kiosks for ordering and are looking into automating the assembly line. Walmart is working towards self checkout only in the future. So, all this pandering to people who want high wages for low jobs is just making these companies turn you into an unpaid employee and costing jobs.

They are kind if being forced since people don't find the pay worth dealing with "Karens" all day. I don't blame either the workers nor necessarily the business. It is what it is. But I do appreciate competent service when dining out (even if it's a fast food joint, which I don't hit very often). While true, it's not a hard job, it's surprising how many places can't get it right. And I'll concede that kids do need to get some on the job experience somewhere, they also need adults in those positions to keep them focused and guide them along the way.

Is this the case though? McDonald's workers in Denmark make (and have been making) the equivalent of $22/hr. Their Big Mac costs $5.15; ours cost $4.80 - call me a bleeding heart, but I'll pay an extra $0.35 to know that my fellow man can live a dignified life. Hell, we already see frequent price increases on menu items just for the sake of Stock Growth.

There has never been a lack of ability for these poverty centers to properly pay their employees a living wage. There's simply a lack of motivation to do it as these companies know that our tax dollars will subsidize the welfare checks that a person working full time is given. That difference is then given directly to their investors though stock buy-backs, etc.

Honestly, it's kind of depressing how people will defend these mega-corps exploiting the most vulnerable in our society, all while on our dime, because uNsKiLLeD LabOr. There are plenty of people in the world making way more, while doing way less, than your average fast food worker.

It was more of a dig at the fact that the stock market drives everything. And yes, it's a vicious cycle. I've worked fast food in my life, a shit ton of it in fact, and I was able to live off my wages from it. So we are talking about the increase in costs vs wage over the last ~15 years. As long as people continue to want everything cheap AND have their retirement accounts increase, that unfortunately means something has to give. Their workers should Unionize while they can, pretty soon there will be very few FF jobs available with McDonald's leading the way to automation.

Just for reference, the McD in my town starts at $15.50/hr. IF you can get 40/hrs that's enough to live off of. It may not be going on vacation multiple times per year comfortable, but it's livable. Hell even walmart can't find employees here starting at 18. Several factories are at $25+ starting +differentials.

    It's a weird time, that's for sure.

    Too many, but not enough....
Denmark also has like a 40% tax on its citizens to pay for all those social programs, like alot of Europe does, so the more you pay the workers, the more money the government makes which is its own incentive to pay higher. Not necessarily the case with the US tax codes.

But i agree with you, i would pay .35 cents more if i knew it was going directly to the employee, where that .35 cents would get pumped right back into the economy and it would be better for everyone overtime, but you just know the company would take a big wet bite out of that .35 cents.

Gross misrepresentation, exclusion of multiple factors, and not as simple as you are trying to make it. Makes a great meme to convince idiots on social media, but just 2 minutes of research starts poking major holes.

As far as the fast food stuff goes, I made due on it. You know how? I didn't have a brand new car. I didn't have a fancy phone, I didn't buy new clothes all the time. My shoes weren't $100+ sneakers. I didn't knock anybody up and drown myself in bills by making bad decisions and blame the world for it.

I sincerely hope that all my problems are my own doing. If they are I can fix them. If it's all the world's/society's/capitalism's/corporate greed's fault, then I am powerless to change it and doomed.

Get off the f*cking pitty pot, put on your boots, and work. It's hard. Life is hard. It can be hard because you are lazy, or it can be hard because you work hard to improve. Pick your hard.

    Follow up questions;

What is more beneficial to society? Non-skilled jobs paying enough to reduce unemployment/homelessness, or casting aside those deemed unworthy - so long as they don't try to set up camp in your backyard? Does the money do more good for our country being horded by the top percentile, or would it be better to reinvest that capital back into the lower classes of citizens (aka least educated/capable) via jobs that would keep them off government funds and help them be self-sufficient?

If every business turns to robots, where will the money to buy those products the robots produce come from? There are alot more poor people than there are middle/upper class people. Middle and especially upper class people tend to save and invest more than they spend. We need poor people to have spendimg money - and it's better if it comes from wages than if it comes from more taxes on the middle/upper class.

You see what I'm saying? Where is the balance?

Old reliable V8 vs new twin-turbo V6, which has twice more parts to fail and associated longevity concerns. That's for sure! ;)
