    Too many, but not enough....
I dont really agree with this. People are free to do as they please and I support anyone who wants to stay at a job they like, and any job that supports ones family is admirable and that person should be proud of what they do for the good of their family, BUT thats not the same as saying a cashier at Mcdonald's is "owed" the same life/opportunities/materials things as someone who put the time to become a doctor, or an engineer or something like that. I have a friend who is a janitor at a school, its a great job, he loves it and he built a life and a family doing that job, but he cant afford a new Tundra, a larger home, or to live outside of a rural area in a state with a lower cost of living. Again, there is NOTHING wrong with that but what I am saying is there are things he cannot do at all, as much, or as often, as someone who gets paid more for a more skilled job or a job that required more personal sacrifice such as years of schooling or training or experience. Basic necessities as you say, yes, sure, but its not a big jump from just getting by to most people thinking "why shouldnt I get all the other stuff people get, why do I have to just get by".

I feel like this line of thinking is kind of what put us in the general type of situation we are in nowadays where we see people wanting like $22 dollars an hour to flip burgers, or my freaking younger brother as an example, who is entitled and wants to drive a new tesla, but is content delivering door dash burgers for essentially 8 bucks an hour in california and who bitches about gas being too expensive. Hes mad at my right now because I shit on him every chance I get, like, nobody owes you anything dude, if you are happy then fine, have at it, but dont bitch that you cant get something you want when you are putting in the absolute minimum and expecting stuff to happen for you. I was emptying semi trailers at 15 years old by hand with illegals at my dads warehouse in the 90's, no AC or air circulation, for hours a day. The sweat stains on my ass and crotch were nuts. It taught me the value of a buck and how many drops of sweat i am willing to shed to make the money. I have been employed every minute of my life since then, progressively moving up my income and my job to where I am now. Nobody owed me anything, i put in my time. My younger brother wasnt made to do that by my dad and i think its the reason he has become so entitled and stagnant in his life to the point of bitterness.

As the saying goes “the world needs ditch diggers too…”

Our organization uses GoodWill Industries for our janitorial duties. These employees get shit on left and right. Most of our cleaning staff are ex-military, on disability, and lead normal lives. There are special needs employees but not many in the janitorial staff.

They drive their own vehicles from building to building, don’t get mileage reimbursement (some sites are 30 miles apart), crap pay while often doing the job of two/three personnel, get messed around with on vacation/sick time…and the list goes on.

They have a huge turnover for obvious reasons..which in turn causes more training, complaints from customers, etc.

sounds like the end result is still more expensive since they're being paid 3X more (3x more hours).

    Absolutely and to the point.

When I start getting frustrated with my career path, I print out a pay stub and fold it up and put it in my pocket. Everytime I feel like that again I pull out that paycheck, look at it, and then say "best fucking job I ever had!" and smile. I learned this from a millennial and it works like a charm.

I've operated a shovel in a ditch for 8-16 hour days for 3/4 less pay than I do now. So yeah, I'm good.

Should the guy flipping burgers make the same money as a doctor? Absolutely not. Only a grade A dumbass would make that comparison. It doesn’t mean they shouldn’t make enough to support themselves and their family without having to decide between food or utilities every week.
Nobody’s goal is to stay working in a job like that forever. Believe it or not, most people really do want to I or their situation, move up, and make a better life for their families. It’s not as easy as people want to make it out to be.
People either never knew, or forget how expensive being poor is. You can’t get a decent car, so it breaks more often. New tires? Forget it. Maybe you don’t have a car at all, so you have to work somewhere the bus will reach. Rent almost always costs more per month than a mortgage.

The amount of people who argue against helping others, doing what we can to ease their burden is pathetic. I went from absolutely nothing to a very good life with no help from anyone. No education, no money, no support whatsoever. It was a bitch and I worked my ass off for it. Guess what? I’m not going to be mad if it’s easier for the next guy. I’m not going to demand that everyone’s path be as difficult as mine was. If things change to give others a better chance at making it, I’d be nothing but happy for them.

Since making a better life and getting a better job and starting a company are so easy, how come most of you had to finance your trucks? You couldn’t afford them either, which is why you had to get a loan. Guess we all didn’t work hard enough to be able to just buy one.

Flipping burgers should pay enough to support a family? Flipping burgers is a high school kids job. If you’re supporting a family, you need to level up. Might even be a good idea to plan ahead and have the better job prior to bringing more humans on your payroll. If you want something, work for it. No one deserves anything. No skill jobs don’t have to pay a “living wage” whatever that was supposed to mean when they invented that term.

I don't usually jump into a thread like this. But I'm a boomer, OK boomer, and I don't have a problem with training young people. But the expectations from the younger folks is pay me now. I had a guy 20 years ago that knew how to do one job and expected to be paid as much as a guy that could do every job except that one. 2 years experience vs 30.

I know this started as a tech thread, but blue-collar workers don't seem to exist anymore.

Don't put that on me. I have welders, pipefitters and shipfitters that make more than me on an annual basis. And I take the blame when they fuck up. At least my kids are raising their kids the same way I raised them. Take responsibility for what you do and figure out what you want to do.

And I should have retired long ago is true, but sadly it didn't work out that way. Two more years. Unless the stock market takes another dump or insurance gets more out ragesous.

The goal should be to create an environment (system?) which will generate as many working middle class families as possible. There will always be poor for various reasons, but finding a way to create a huge middle class would benefit everyone. Unbridled Capitalism has proven it can't get us there, and full blown Socialism eventually runs out of other people's money. There has to be a balance in there somewhere that provides enough of a safety net to help people when they need it and keep them from dropping out of the labor force completely without being so restrictive/generous as to stunt Capital growth. Wish I had the answer on how to do that.

I can see where you are coming from. If you want more money....what are you willing to do for it? Why should an employer give you more?

I have a career outside operator that could have been a control room operator 15+ years ago. It is considered an entry level job, but it pays well (39.95 + 1.70 shift diff for nights). We have been telling her to move up for years. I won't even talk about a 401K/457. She is now 59 years old and wanted to retire next year with 20 years of service. Well on her retirement spreadsheet and the payment calculator it was saying she would get 6700.00 per month for her retirement. Her HAS (highest annual salary which is top three year averages is around 118K per year) to get that 6700.00 per month in retirement. Now she has some retirements from other businesses that might add up to 600.00 per month. When she can, SS will be filed and will add some more in the monthly pot for her. She has now extended her retirement now a couple times now due to not being enough to retire on monthly. Now 7300 per month doesn't sound horrible until you have to pay health insurance and cost of living expenses do not go up at the rate it has been going up these days. She is also expecting to sell her home in Colorado for big gains (risky) and pay for her new home in TN that has escalated up north of 500K dollars. All said and done...she will probably owe 225-250K on her home. In the current state of interest rates that will be ~1600 per month without tax/insurance. So probably at least 1800.00 per month on home. After paying all the insurances, food, phones, gas, etc she might have 2200.00 left over which isn't horrible and better than most people today.

Now I can take if she moved up to a Control Room operator. 10-14.00 per hour over 15 years. That would have been 403,000.00 more income straight time. With the amount of overtime available and control room operators can step down to cover outside operators jobs. To be honest, she would have been at least 630K dollars better. She could have purchased service credit years and retired with 29 years of service (which means taking home a higher percentage of her HAS 45 vs 73%) and have a 9-10,000.00 per month retirement and live a lot more comfortable.

We all make choices that can affect us down the road. Your brother will find that out the hard way most likely.

I’m with you on this…to a point. I’ve had the exact same path you describe for yourself.

I’ll celebrate someone who doesn’t have to do the time and face the difficulties to get ahead, as long as they’re not getting ahead from the theft of my efforts, or anyone else’s.

I agree, that people need to help each other. However, that help and giving needs to be 100% voluntary, and from the heart. Whenever “help” is mandated, it generates bitterness and resentment, while stifles or eliminates the true generosity of people.

I try and do so as much as I can, whenever I can, for the very reason you state. I do my best to be sure I’m giving a hand up, and not a hand out.

I've had a bunch of "kid" jobs and don't remember managers from any of them except the general manager at the Carl's Jr I worked when I was 17. He said he wants us to excel at that job so we can all move on soon with at least a few more skills and a little more experience in life than when we started there. I will never forget that. He knew that job had its place and what it was for.

    Holy shit
If I could draw 7300 per month on top of my 401k's I'd be fishing and day drinking
Dead in two years and my wife would have to deal with the rest. No nursing home bills to take care of.

That's what pisses me off, knowing he will realize it on his own, and knowing how dearly it will have cost him in time when he does realize it.

Not directly related to the above but America is about as equal between economic classes of society outside of direct communism or socialism as you can get. There are poor and rich people that wear the same Nikes, and drive the same cars (outside of ridiculous examples like Ferraris) because America has found a way to make it POSSIBLE, not to say you should or that it's smart, but possible. Me and a burger flipper can both buy tundras, they would be spending 70% of their income on it and probably get twice the rate and term but the point is they can. Goes right along with America being the land of opportunity and to the example above of how expensive it is to be poor, but that expensiveness buys you the possibility that wouldn't otherwise exist elsewhere. It's up to the person to do what's best for them and what they need.

I'm struggling to understand how $7,300/month isn't enough to retire, especially in Tennessee. That's more than many people in Tennessee make.

The only thing I would have done differently is make sure I had no mortgage by the time I was ready to retire. Sounds like she is building a nice house here.

I never said everyone should get the same life opportunities. Just that you shouldn't have to take multiple jobs to scrape by for necessities.

Who flips burgers from while kids are in school? Living wage is simply that, enough to provide shelter and food for yourself on one job. Not an extravagant lifestyle just basic needs.

I'm not saying everyone is a good person, I'm not saying that some aren't lazy, that some don't work harder, that some don't make poor choices, just that everyone deserves to be treated with some compassion.

50-60 years ago you could easily walk into a job with nearly no education, afford most things you wanted, and start a family on one income. That's a pipe dream today.

Where’s the cutoff then? What’s the lowest form of life that you deem worthy of being paid enough to support themselves?

A young person who still lives at home with mom or has roomies can probably live on a burger flipping job. Maybe rides a bike or has a beater with state minimum crappy insurance. What exactly is supporting oneself anyway? Guess that depends on what needs to be supported. If someone’s idea of a life sustaining career is fast food service, they’re out of their minds. Ain’t about the person (although the unmotivated may disagree) it’s about what value you can bring. Don’t settle for the burger flipping, Strive to learn a skill or a trade. Hell, be the garbage man, dude gets paid. But work. Don’t expect what hasn’t been earned. If someone is truly unable to provide for themselves through work, there are social programs available for that. Those programs will be abused, anything good will, they still should exist for those that need it even knowing someone will abuse it. Taking the burger flipping job and not the moving company job, or the manual labor construction job that pays more is just taking the easy way out. What reward does that deserve? I don’t care what they pay burger flippers, except that my wife and I ate at Fat Burger and 2 meals was $37. Wonder why.

Choices man....but we can go through it a bit. She is building a 2000 square foot home outside Kingston. It's a nice area, but it would have been way cheaper to buy vs build.

7300 and after taxes is 6400. Now medical is pretty spendy these days. The other day I looked at what insurance would cost us for a family plan....2040 per month. Yeah...affordable my ass. She said working at Costco will give her pretty good benefits but that isn't written in stone yet either. So for her and the wife it will be around 1600.00 per month. Now we are down to 4800.00. I think the mortgage will be around 1800 per month (crazy that she is doing this going into retirement). Down to 3000.00. Now we have phones/auto boat atv house insurance/food/utilities/fuel/toiletries/dental & optical insurance/clothing/registration fees/etc. Not sure what else I am missing. Probably something like usual. She will have probably 1500.00 left over.

Not my plan if we end up in TN. House will be paid for (one less thing), we do not carry auto loans, so our major monthly cost will be Health/dental/optical insurance.

People don’t seem to understand cause and effect or the power of we the people.

Generally speaking: Good choices over the long haul = better results than poor choices, no matter who it upsets.

And why isn’t every single human being no matter their views asking exactly where their current tax money is going before talking about changing the amount we all pay or who pays how much?

Can’t be upset at the state of affairs if the vast majority contribute to it. Cause and effect.

Lol at everyone saying a burger flipper doesn't deserve a living wage - you know how they get by right? They pull welfare benefits that are paid for by your and my taxes. Meanwhile, the golden arches convert those savings into more stock buy-backs and cash for rich investors who were born on third base and probably haven't put in a day of hard work in their life.

The reality is that there is no 'skilled' or 'unskilled' labor class and the pandemic made that apparent (remember all those essential heros? Can't give them a raise, but we sure can put out some thank you balloons!). There's really only the working class (us and those burger flippers) and the owner class (those that benefit from ripping off us and those burger flippers). Us infighting about how burger flippers shouldn't make $x more dollars an hour is exactly what they want to keep us distracted with. Otherwise, we might all realize how much money they're siphoning off of the burger flipper's labor, and then start realizing how much money they're siphoning off OUR labor (hint, it's a lot, but you can read all up on how much corpo profits have gone up in the past 40 years).

Finally, for everyone saying "well if a burger flipper makes X, nobody will want to be Y" - isn't that exactly why this thread was made? Who wants an IT job at $21/hr when a fast food restaurant will pay that? They obviously need to pay more to attract talent - a rising tide that lifts all working class ships.

In this great nation, you will get paid one of two ways

    paid for what you do
    Or
    Paid for what you know

    advice-go with the second option

Whatever this forum told me to do
this would fall under getting paid for what you know.

    knowing the shot-caller counts.

if one is a dumb-ass - the trick is to find a business that you can survive in, once you get the good job.

Gov/union jobs are a fine example.

The free market does not, generally, support this tho'.

    profits drive business.

If a business can survive by hiring sh1theads...Godspeed to them. Those businesses are generally not in the free market.

and...it helps to be kind & smart - and to know a lot of people (network).

it's the people that don't network that get pissed when a kind smart fella gets the job - that happened to play golf with the shot-caller.

    this is life.
    Life ain't fair.

My wife couldn't understand why my vacations were always interrupted by work emails and phone calls. She would always ask why can't they find someone else to do your job while on vacation? My standard answer was if they could I wouldn't have the job I have.
