AGM Battery Charger and Tundra Electronics

Looking to buy the Odyssey OBC-12A AGM battery charger from the maker of my ODX-AGM27F battery in my 2019 Tundra. Can anybody tell me if there are any dangers to the instruments and electronics i.e., things on standby power, alarm, etc. if I charge the battery while connected in the truck?

I’ve got an agm battery in mine and sometimes it sits for a few weeks. I throw the charger on with everything hooked up and it’s fine. My charger says it’ll do regular and agm batteries.

I use this one and it specifically states to disconnect the battery.

 

I believe that the Odyssey charger goes through an absorption cycle that tops out at 14.8 volts on an AGM battery. That voltage is generally fine to leave everything connected. The exception can be some sensitive amateur radio equipment but if you have that type of equipment you will already be a power expert!

 

I use an Odyssey OBC-20 charger and have zero complaints with it.

Now, if I could only figure out a way to make Odyssey batteries last more than 2 years…. Daily driver, so it’s not sitting around.

 

Mines on the charger now for its monthly top off. Ctek multi us 7002 model. Has an agm setting. Pigtail stays hooked up to the battery full time. Battery is four years old with no issues. Had it in a previous vehicle

 

You don't have to detach terminals with that charger?

 

Only time you need to pull the battery out is if you are doing a recovery mode with the charger. It uses higher voltage that sensitive components might not like.

It doesn't require me to unhook my battery?

 

No, you can charge it with the clamps and battery connected, or can hook up the 'permanent' connection.
If you did a deep descale you might want to disconnect the battery, but a trickle charge is fine.
I did it twice and it charged my AGM, but the battery had other issues.

I don't have an AGM battery anymore, so I don't need a charger..

 

No there is a pigtail attached to the battery that came with the charger.

I had a 27F Interstate MTP, it was only 20 months old when my cats were stolen in November.
Toyota replaced my battery with a Trustart 84-month battery when they replaced my cats.
They had the truck for 8 months and replaced the battery at their expense.

I had Interstate test the MTP when I got it back and they said it still held a charge.
I ended up giving it away to someone that needed it.
I have no need for 2 27F batteries..

Update:
I tried to buy an Odyssey OBC-20A and they are not being made anymore. Odyssey engineering recommends charging my ODX-AGM27F with 40% of the battery's C10 rating, so for the 27-PC1750 class of battery (my ODX-AGM27F) rated at 65Ah it should be charged at the rate of 26A, still more than the OBC-20A output. I was told by the sales engineer at Enersys that the 40% of C10 charging rate specified by their engineering department is unrealistic, and the OBC-12A should be adequate.

I ended up going with a NOCO genius pro 25 which works the same as the Odyssey charger and puts out 25A if needed. I consulted the Enersys (Odyssey) sales engineer and was told that the NOCO charger should work fine since it has an AGM setting. The NOCO also charges LIFeO4 batteries and other lead-acid types as well.

So, I went for it. I charged all my car batteries first to try it out, then charged my AGM in the truck while connected. It puts out 14.8 charging volts for the AGM which is about 1V higher than lead-acid types. It ramps up the charging while monitoring the vitals and then goes through an "optimization" sequence until the battery is fully 100% charged. There was no ill effect to my truck's electronics, and I fell confident now that charging this way every couple of months should keep my AGM battery in peak condition. I did inquire about the charging diode mentioned in an earlier post, and neither the Odyssey people nor Toyota had ever heard of this, so I avoided going down that road, seeing this was not necessary if I just applied a periodic maintenance charge every few months to keep the AGM battery happy.
