This^^^... There are much better options out there......downsize to a truck better than the current Taco. I've been driving a way better option for almost 12 months now.....:spy:

    Yeah...

Would the softer suspension on the Pro be an issue for your camping setup?@GODZILLA
Especially when towing the SxS and the weight of the tent/gear in the bed.

Lol. I have yet to ever come across a Ridgeline wanna be pickup up in the mountains here. Never...except a pavement princess driving by a FS access road wondering what it's like going offroad....

Pretty much all this. The financing is my big one. Have your rate before you go. If they can beat it, great. If not, use what you got elsewhere. (Spoiler alert - the dealership will always beat it.)
Main thing is do not ever let your guard down once you get to the finance office. Those guys aren’t accountants. They’re salesmen. They get commission on whatever you add on in that office (financing, warranty, etc.).
When a salesman or finance guy leave you and your spouse alone, stay alert. What a lot of them are doing is leaving their desk phone on speaker and listening to you from another office. It’s been true every time I’ve tested it. Either keep your mouths shut, or use it to your advantage.

Went to look at a travel trailer this weekend and assumed they pulled this when they went to “see what they could do about the price”

I wanted to know was what the max solar upgrade cost and a couple of other upgrades so we let them play the game.

I read about them doing that a few years ago on Reddit and have tested it a few times. It’s been pretty apparent that it was true.
When we bought the Sequoia and the guy left to check on whatever, I told my wife “If they even try to get me to buy an extended warranty we’re out of here.”

Only time I’ve bought a vehicle in my life where they didn’t even mention an extended warranty. Never even brought it up.

I’ve used the warranty thing to my advantage on the last couple trucks.

I hem and haw about it and give them the whole “idk man, do I really need it?” speil, until they offer a lower interest rate if I take it. Then I just cancel the warranty as soon as the terms and conditions make it to the mailbox.*

    *YMMV

Yeah there’s still a lot you can negotiate after you settle on a price. The trick is to do it all one at a time and not show your hand ahead of time. I almost never buy one since I haven’t had a need for an extended warranty since my Chevy days.
You can use the survey as leverage also. The surveys are very important since the manufacturers hold back money for the dealer based on their score. I’ve exchanged a perfect review for Weathertech floor mats, restaurant gift cards, and a tank of gas in the past. I also got a watch from a Chevy dealer that they had in the parts shop. They’re generally very willing to trade items like that since they make way more off the survey than those things cost.

I only do it if I was already going to give them a good score though. The dealer I bought my 2011 Tundra from offered to double Toyota Care from 24k to 48k if I gave them a perfect score. For one thing, I’d have to go to that dealer for the service, and they were too far from my house. Secondly, they seriously pissed me off so I wanted to screw them over.

I have found that this no longer works. Dealers will not email me back or negotiate prices through email. They want you in the building to gain advantage

Yeah they have started playing very close to the vest. I think mainly because they are marking up above MSRP and don’t want to put that in writing. I was putting feelers out on the new Sequoia a couple of weeks ago. Almost 100% of them pretended to not know what the pricing is yet when MSRP has been publicly available for months now.
Only one who even named a price said they already had one pre-sold to someone for 130k.

Dealer add one always made me angry. They often want $500 for window tint and special coating and claim they cannot remove those fees. They are items that they are making huge markups on. I think it is illegal in some states to charge these but idk?

Slimy bastards. Not surprised, but didn't think of it either.

Since you like to go off pavement…

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2gr-fks-engine-problem-failure.774579/

This is the old Edmonds article I like to share.

    https://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/confessions-of-a-car-salesman.html

I have paid for and used consumer reports guidelines too. Yes it sucks paying for it. Put the vin number in and they show you what should be paid. I used it on my diesel purchase and was pretty happy with the results. CR put a 58k dollar price tag on my current truck. I called and offered 58k. They said it could be done and when did I want to come in? Easiest purchase ever.

Something else I have found interesting at dealerships is internet departments are willing to deal. We wanted a Limited 4Runner and the sales staff would not come off the price of 31500. Later on that day I called the internet department and offered 26600 and they took it.

I think the best you can get these days on new is MSRP with a good interest rate and a few add in freebies. The best strategy with that is to do your homework and get comparable numbers and loan quotes ahead of time. Dealers here are advertising they will order for MSRP and I think that is because it is no overhead and it is a deal they would not have had otherwise.

I miss the old days when I bought my Ford. They gave me xxx amount off MSRP, plus dealer incentives, zero interest and cash back. Too bad the covid built ford are Crap!

Used is a different animal and most dealers mark up at least 4K on used vehicles. I like used as you don't take Such a hit in depreciation and someone else has tested the vehicle and worked out any flaws or revealed them. The used truck market here has dropped a bit with the gas prices. There are sometimes deals on the off lease vehicles too.

One tactic used to be dealing with the fleet manager on a price.

Kind of why I gave the current gen Taco a hard pass. The Frontier isn't perfect but the 3.8L is solid.
