hey guys .... finally sold my 2017 SR5 that we bought brand new ... and now getting a new SR crew max 2wd !! we happen to live in FL now so I definitely could care less about 4x4. We were going to get a SR5, but man its about $7000 more and the added stuff really just didnt make sense after thinking about it. Base model it is.

So I know from research that the trailer hitch & wiring are not standard on the base SR and they can be optioned for about $400 or so. Well our truck is already in production it seems like or the build date is like 3 days from now. So I dont think that can be added to the build at this point. I have installed plenty of trailer hitches over the years .. but what about the factory wiring? Can I buy the stock wiring harness & plugs, etc? Im assuming there is a quickie way to connect it in the rear of the truck?

also ... I know the motor is detuned or whatever. dont really care. BUT i would like to know for certain if the cooling is any different? like trans cooler, etc?

So is it just the SR that has the detuned engine or is it the SR5 as well?

I have an SR 4x4 Double Cab. It was optioned with 'Towing Hitch Receiver and 7-Pin Connector'. Things you don't get are as others mentioned, the smaller screen, no brake controller, no tailgate release button on the drivers side tail light and others. None of this was a big deal to me. The thinks I wish I had are adjustable lumber with heated seats(helps with my back issues), CrewCab(Double is not usable for adults) and vanity mirrors on the sunvisors(the wife hates these are missing).

Thanks SkywalkingKenobi for the great info! I was surprised my Wife was totally on board and we even drove a total of 500 miles round trip to pick them up. They were filthy but cleaned up beautifully. Paid $700 for the set.

Just the SR. SR5 and above are full power.

I live at 5900 power robbing feet so I felt I had to get the SR5, although the turbos help mitigate the thin air somewhat.

Hell yea those are sweet. We just put a deposit on an SR that has a Monday build date. Should take about 30 days to receive the truck the dealer said. Pretty pumped. Had a 2017 sr5 and loved it. But couldn’t pass up on the price of an end of year 22 base model SR.

In Florida you probably will never miss the hp.

I waxed these wheels and what a pain in the butt that was. An hour each with a headlamp and chopstick getting all the wax out of every nook and cranny The steel wheels on the SR look like a breeze to clean!

im assuming the used wheels you bought are the same size/height wheels as stock SR ? If not, wont that require some sort of re-calibration of the gauges for speed and mileage etc? Im going to start looking for some wheels now. Are those stock ones from the TRD i guess?

OR ..... I guess I could just powder coat the stock rims black and move on with my life! The color of the truck is that dark grey color. Wasn't my first choice but that's what Toyota allocated to the dealer

Those wheels are legit aeroo and you got the set for a steal! Very nice! I’ll probably never know, but I’m curious how significant the HP difference feels. For me, the SR feels plenty powerful and gives me that thrill when I decide to put a little extra “big toe” on the gas lol. Can’t wait to see pics of y’all’s SR’s when y’all get them!

Repsolracer22, I had stock steel wheels, which are 18’s? And I got the 20” Trd wheels put on. No lift or anything needed since those are 22 Tundra wheels. No re-calibration or adjustment needed.

I used the DML tire calculator to compare tires. The biggest deference between the stock SR tire and the ones I bought is they are 3/4” wider. The circumference, which would mess up the speedometer among other things, is only 0.16” taller. So as I understand it no re-calibration is needed.

In other news … does anyone know if the SR has the same cooling as the SR5 trim and up? Obviously the engine on the SR is detuned a bit, and the tow ratings are lower too. So didn’t know if there’s more foundational items that made the tow rating lower. Like no trans cooler, or frame, suspension etc are any different to warrant this?

Very nice-looking truck. The lift makes it look completely different.
I'm curious about the chrome Grille. Did it come from the factory that way? I thought a Chrome Grille was only available on Platinum models.

@Big Baker the wheels, chrome front grille, chrome rear bumper panels came from a 1794 edition truck. I also painted the mirrors and rear tailgate trim to match the color or the truck.

1990...just curious why you didn't just buy a SR5? not judging just trying to figure out what benefit there is to going this route?

I almost went SR...but ended up with a trd PRO that i did not like so traded for a loaded up SR5 premium/convenience. I love the cleanliness of the SR5

Because the SR5 was 10k more and really doesn't add anything other than a few cosmetics and features I don't care for. The SR is very well equipped for a base model. I figured I'd pay 39k for the SR and spend 4k on it and have it look simular to the 70k 1794 edition truck. This truck has most everything an sr5 has with exception of cosmetics inside and a few things I wouldn't ever use. I don't know why anyone could justify paying 10k for the few extras the sr5 comes with. The only thing to really consider is the sr is detuned about 40 hp but that is easily changed with a tune.

hmm...not trying to be argumentative (I know this seems so but not intended) I like the idea of simplicity the SR brings actually.

But, Looking at SR crew max 4wd msrp is $43,225 with tow package. SR5 is $48,300. not sure where you came up with $10k extra?? again I was looking at this very closely. For the extra $5000 you get more power/torque 40hp/75ft, towing package, aluminum wheels, color matched stuff, plus optional equipment available for add on, for me towing matters, if I was just looking for a truck that I only towed light loads with it wouldn't matter. yes, you can tune it but that WILL void your powertrain warranty and doesn't technically up your towing capacity. As did the lift...Toyota is touchy about aftermarket mods.
We are all different and have different needs. Most people think I'm crazy for not liking the PRO, but both my wife and I disliked it for the same reasons. For me a SR5 with auto level was the right choice. I HATE chrome or fake metal look plastic personally so even the trd offroad SR5 is out.

I paid 39500 for my sr but it is 2wd. Every sr5 around here stickered around 47-48k. I would have been 50k plus out the door. I wanted a 1794 but but they are near 62-65k. My truck looks very simular to one for 45k. Many people don't understand the tuning part. It cost about 300 bucks to do it and if something fails due to being defective I can simply remove the tune before taking it for warranty work. To me all the plastic makes a truck look cheap. A modest amount of chrome makes a truck look nicer. I think that's why most higher trims come with chrome.

The ecu can be reflashed with vin programming from an sr5 or higher trim although technically it can be done in hp tuners software as soon as vin credits become available for it. These engines will be great candidates for custom tuning. I'm sure there will be aftermarket waste gates at some point in the near future.
