I'd advise looking for something with gears instead of a CVT if you actually want to go off pavement much. I'd rather have gears anyway, but especially if you wanna climb up hills and the like.

I climbed some pretty steep hills both dirt and snow covered and it did pretty great. Only time I've seen the cvt not do well is genuine 1 wheel in the air rock crawling. Then it struggles.

Good first hand info! I just know that if they start to heat up the vehicle will cut power to preserve itself, and people have just needed it to sustain it for an extra second or two when it cuts their legs out from under them.

For some reason, our state won’t let me transfer plates so I had to pay full title / reg / and new plates :angrygirl:

Sucks living in Colo-fornia, eh? :p

When I got my Tundra I transferred my plates to save about $300, and the trades I did made my tax liability for the truck just under 5 bucks.

Yep, welcome to the money grab. Just like every time a vehicle gets sold, someone pays sales tax.
Think of how much the state makes over the life of a vehicle. :eek2:

Looks great, I love that front end! Got any other pictures?
Has he mentioned how he likes the power of the flat 4?

Yeah, IDK why they didn't give the Forester the turbo. I think it looks way better than the Outback, but I'd have to get the Outback just for the power.

The wilderness actually has a different CVT with manual shifting available.

Would not be wheeling it though, light trails and FS roads would be the worst of it.
    Mainly a kid/dog hauler.

Yeah, kind of a bummer. My wife wouldn't care though.
We would get the Forrester for looks/room.

It was far better than I expected it to be for a forest road vehicle. Actually took bigger bumps at speed pretty well.

The shifting is all simulated anyway, and it will still cut power if the CVT is heating up. Not a concern with your use case, though. If that were all I required, I'd rock one. They look good and the body cladding actually protects you from having a chipped up paint job. Subie paint chips SUPER easily. My WRX taught me that.

The cvt and engine oil coolers must do a pretty good job preventing that because one day with my dad we spent almost 3 hours driving in 1 foot+ deep snow with hills mixed in and no warning lights or pulled performance of any kind. Actually getting kind of nostalgic because of all this thinking and talking about the OBW, that's how awesome it was lol ( still no regret though, absolutely have to have a truck, I have finally realized)

I'm actually getting excited about it with the big cargo space, higher clearance, awd. Should be fun with our winters.
Just need to test drive a Forrester with the flat 4 then I'll start getting serious

It will usually only do it under load like pulling it's bulk up a hill at low speed. Very situational, but it's the worst situations to cut power that it will do it in. Bombing snow drifts shouldn't be a problem. I'm not surprised you didn't have any issues either, as it is not a huge factor. More of a minor irritant that I would rather avoid completely.

The Subie Boxers are pretty good. Don't abuse it, keep up on maintenance, and you'll go many 100Ks, but when you do have to fix stuff I have heard they are a bitch to work on. I didn't own mine long enough to find out. Learned the same thing as @LarryDangerfield ; I want a truck. :D As a secondary rig, I'd be all about the Outback wilderness, and if there were a way to turbo the Forester I'd be on it like white on rice in a snowstorm.

Cmonnn gotta get the t u r b o !!! It was pretty fun when the boost came on :D also when passing it was the quickest I've ever experienced in terms of accelerating after stomping the pedal. Damn near instantaneous acceleration in the power band instead of waiting for a shift and hoping the gear it picks provides good acceleration.

Never really thought about that, but I bet a CVT remedies the turbo lag pretty well. :monocle:

Yeah, the only place it sometimes lacked was low speed stomping it, like from 10mph it would sometimes think for a second before becoming a 4 tires digging rocket :D

Spent another hour or two replacing a throttle cable on our Ninebot scooter. Youngest crashed it last week and broke the sensor. What a PITA

    I know, I know.
More money, less mpg's and a little less cargo room make it a hard sell though.

Just got back from a 3 mile walk. Temps are coming up now and the air smells like a camp fire. Starting to see ash on my truck and my throat is a bit scratchy. That's all the outside stuff for me today...

You'll love the radar cruise and auto headlights, better than any other vehicle I've driven. Cruise can even do stop and go traffic. Just don't do the auto steering because of the whole literally tried to kill me thing.
