I work in I.T for a smaller city govt. entity in AZ. and we cannot find skilled employees. Right now we have openings for 3 positions and I am helping to fill in for all three plus doing my own. The problem with trying to fill these position is a multitude of issues in that we require a background check, a polygraph, a drug test, someone with experience and housing is expensive in the area. Many IT people who are skilled enough are already making more elsewhere. Some places like the local Chinese buffet are paying $20 hr. and MJ is legal here.

We really need to find someone that wants to live in the area vs. trying to attract someone for just the position. Anyone have any similar issues where you work and do you have any creative ideas on how to find people? Anyone want to move to AZ? The openings are for IT Tech I, Radio Tech, and Public Safety IT Tech. PM me if you are interested.

Funny you mention that. I work for the state and was kidding that they have an opening for my current job in Cottonwood. After camping at Dead Horse last year, my wife has been joking about relocating. Plus her job of almost 30 years just ended.

    Try working in Education.

All of the districts are shorthanded with the largest ones, including Houston ISD, short 900+ teachers with an estimated 3400 teacher shortages spread out over the various districts around here.

You say high housing costs and qualified people make more working elsewhere—I wonder why it's so hard to fill the positions? :p

It's a job, money talks tbh. You want skills, be ready to pay.
My company is cheap, we get what we pay for as far as employees (engineering). I keep telling them to up the $$ so we can get qualified candidates..nope..projects take 6 months where it could be done in 2..

I did plenty before I became a teacher. Politics is rampant in the private sector, corporate world, and even on the floor of a drilling rig.

I was once told that to attract and maintain your skilled labor an employer should pay 3x minimum wage. This was a long time ago and I thought they were nuts.

Interesting enough, when minimum wage was high enough to where skilled labor was only 2x people started leaving.

Good luck. More $ draws more skill. I've considered moving back to AZ, but am definitely not skilled enough to even understand a quarter of the stuff y'all do. But, I can pass a polygraph and a piss test......

The polygraph is because we work and deal a lot with public safety and have access to sensitive info and data. I think the tech I job starts at $21, but that is with benefits including paid insurance and state retirement contribution and paid holidays and time off.

I and a Tech II and I love my job and we have a great dept. I am just getting a little stressed with the workload and I need to learn how to better let things go.

Azblue, take a look at the job and area and apply. There are a few good breweries here. My wife and I moved to AZ 6 years ago for my job here. We bought a house in clarkdale before prices went nuts. Some of the housing issue is because of all the CA ppl moving here.

    Yeah, damn CA people.

I didn't have to do a polygraph for my job, but I did need to get a Level 1 fingerprint clearance card. I have some good equity in my house here in Tucson, but with the current craziness, I'm sure homes up there are not exactly cheap.

LMAO $21 an hour, that is way to low for a skilled position, that’s your problem. The cost of living is so high right now, you can literally make more working fast food. This is the problem with employers now a days and the last 20 years wages have not kept up with inflation. Bump that hourly pay to $30 an hour and you will find someone easily.

It’s crazy to me that every company everywhere seems to be short handed, regardless whether the position requires specific schooling or X years of experience or just requires basic competence and a pulse. How are so many people still not working?

I understand that you don't control the pay scale but I have to agree with Tundra Dude. Pay is obviously way too low to attract the qualified people that you are looking for.

Well, a lot of useless degrees have been prioritized lately, and the example of "you don't have to fulfill your obligations and contracts that you agreed to as a legal adult" has been set forth. Why work? It's somebody else's job to take care of you.

In reality, the higher paid positions are not in a shortage whereas the craptastic jobs that nobody wants are struggling. Even teens looking for work experience are staying away.

Legal immigration has slowed down due to policies set a while ago and illegal immigration has been soaring. This doesn’t help one bit.

Between 2019-currently families have found out they can live on a lot less.

Realizing this is a very oversimplified statement…places are short handed, because the baby boomers who should’ve started retiring years ago but kept on working, retired en masse when Covid hit. Those same baby boomers who were managing said companies, decided a long time ago that it was too expensive to invest in their people via real training efforts, so the talent pipeline dried up. Wages stayed flat because of an abundance of Gen X’ers looking for work coming out of school, to fill jobs that weren’t available. Now there’s a major shortfall of qualified talent, and a still weak stomach for training and wages.

Things are going to get worse before they get better.

Just out of curiosity I looked up what the average carpenter makes. 38.00 for a skilled journeyman. People want money…just not what you are paying.

Trust me, I’m dealing with it too. We had to give 9.00 per hour raises in 2019 to just keep our current workforce. Then we gave pretty good raises the next two years after that. Our entry level job (at journey level) pays 39.78. This does include shift work, some built in overtime (212 hours per year), paid holidays (if worked 3x wage), off 12-15 days per month, 3-5 weeks paid vacation, benefits, etc. Next level in my department is 46-56.00 per hour.
