I’m looking for a general consensus on what I should or shouldn’t do with this issue….

So, I got new tires put on… This is what they did to ALL 5 of my wheels. This is a brand new spare Toyota Rim I got, first tire mounted on it is by them (The Tundra TRD Pro BBS wheel/
PT960-34190-02). These are not cheap wheels. The same marks/scratches are now on ALL 5 wheels. It's on the inside that faces under the truck but still-I should complain and be an asshole right? These are $550ish a piece/per wheel. See all the marks?

What should I be asking them to do about it? Replace all 5 and do it right? Let it go or what? In the last two years, this is the first shop and time my wheels have been damaged at all. I called and they told me to bring the truck back in the morning so they can evaluate it since their balancing machines are “Touchless”… Yeah Right. Shop is TCRII in AZ.

Since its just on the inside, I would just touch them up and call it a day. Life's too short to worry about things like that.

That’s from the mounting machine, not balancing. Really? Never gonna see it, and will be hidden by brake dust in a week.

That's from the tire mounting machine holding on to the rim. Really, there should be a way to avoid that but I'm not familiar with the machine.

That’s what I’m trying to find out, is it Really a big enough deal to make a big deal? Ha. I mean this is the third set of tires and first time a place damaged the wheel mounting tires. It’s like really guys, come on. I just feel like it shouldn’t have happened.

Most rim clamp tire machines have nylon covers available for the claws to prevent damage to the finish like this.

If you have them touch them up, the over spray from their rattle can could create a bigger problem. Get a black paint pen or sharpie and call it good.

Discount tire did this to two of my wheels recently with a new tire purchase, except it was the outside facing rim and went almost all the way around the wheel. I brought it to their attention and they got me 2 new replacement wheels from Toyota.

If it had been the inside where I'll never see it I probably would have just touched it up with some touch up paint. I wouldn't blame you a bit for being upset or asking them to make it right though, stuff like that shouldn't happen.

So here’s an update. Things got worse. Shop admitted to it being their fault, even told me they checked their security cameras because they swore their tire mounting machine was touch less. Admitted their tech had my rims on the machine the wrong way and that’s why the machine bit in to and scratched up all my wheels. It wasn’t able to hold them tight. So, they said they would send them out to have them all refinished professionally, had me leave my spare first. I go to pick up my spare wheel today, and dude says one of his guys used to fix wheels so let him do it. Takes me to see my wheel in back and says if I’m okay with it, he will have him do all 5.

These dudes took my wheel in the back, sanded and used bondo, then rattle can spray paint. I’m sorry, that’s just not going to cut it when they agreed to actually have them refinished. Those TRD pro wheels are like $550 a piece and I had just bought the brand new matching spare, they mounted the first tire on and scratched up, that now has bondo and rattle can covering it up. Petty on my side, maybe. Wrong on their side? Definitely. I’m going to ask them for 5 new wheels at this point and they can have the ones they scratched up to do whatever they want with. I just expect attention to detail, people doing their jobs right and making things right when they screw up.

What a nightmare.... I hope they can replace or compensate for the damage. At this point they shouldn't be allowed to make any money off you, at the very least maybe a refund on the tires and install minus cost could get you a few hundred back.

I've had rims gets damaged before, I always inspect the rims before leaving the tire shop now. Last time it happened was on a new set of rims for my wife's Yukon. Dropped the rims off in the boxes, brand new, picked them up later that day and as I was loading them into the back I was checking the rims. First one was good, second had a small chip on the inside bore where the center cap goes, I set it aside and the next one had the same but worse. I took the other rims out of the truck and went back home for a center cap, by the time I came back there was three guys standing outside looking at the rims. As soon as I got out one of them, obviously irritated that I was complaining about the chip, starts in about they didn't do that and it'll never be seen anyway. So I popped the center cap in and you could see the chips. The guy kept going which started to really irritate me and some words were exchanged until one of the guys told him to leave. That pretty much sealed the deal for me and they were fixing the rims. In the end they paid to have all 4 rims stripped and powder coated at their cost.

    Dang man!
It’s the inside of the rim!
Hit it with a marker and be done.
Piss off your shop guys over something more substantial.

You should’ve never let them “try” to repair.
The damaged was not enough to even worry about.
    Now you’re just in deeper.
    Good luck with that.

yikes op, sorry to hear that- I'd have to agree with you, the wheel they bondo'd and spray painted is now effectively ruined (would need to be professional fixed (if even possible after the bondo) and powder coated)

If I were you I'd want that spare wheel replaced, but now maybe you can pick the shop you bring the other 4 to and get them to pay

Well all the stuff is on the inside so if it were me I'd bring it to their attention and let them touch them up the right way and be done with it.

If it were on the outside, that's a whole different matter. I've had wheel scuffs happen from the 18 year old using the impact like Wyatt Earp slinging lead and letting it fall where it may (lugs spin off and hit the wheel). They also can't put on center caps right to save their lives.

I'm more inclined to do my own rotations now even though they're "free".

FYI, from what I understand the PRO wheels can’t be powder coated. Something to do with them being forged. Don’t accept this option for repair and keep pushing until they make it right. You paid a lot of money for these wheels and they need to be held accountable for their mistakes.

Because his time is money and his truck is down because of their incompetence. He paid them to do a service correctly the first time and they didn’t do that. Now that this will cost him time and inconvenience so they should make it right and comp his costs to make up for it. It not taking advantage of the situation, it’s holding them accountable.

You can’t just sand, bondo and rattle can a wheel. It’ll throw off the balance.

Do you agree that time is money?
If they would have done their job correctly the first time then they would owe him nothing.
Since they did not do their job correctly and have caused him to lose more time and he will continue to lose more time, they owe him something (for his time and inconvenience and other expenses. To be fair, I would estimate the time I spent and give them a number based on what my time is worth. They will see, It would be cheaper for them to comp the entire bill depending on the hours it took to resolve the issue.

Just because they make it right in the end, does not get them off the hook.
No Hustle - just do your job correctly the first time and we wont have an issue.
His time, gas and inconvenience is worth something.

I’m not perfect and never claimed to be. If my team or myself made a mistake I would have took ownership and brought it to the attention of the customer before he even saw it. I would not have my team bondo an expensive part in hopes it would be to the customers satisfaction. I understand where you are coming from too. It just frustrates me to think how much time is lost due to their incompetence. I work out of town a lot, so my time is very valuable when I’m home. I barely have time to do things the first time, let alone 2&3 more times.

ouch, clamp it inside the rim I see...I wouldn't clamp inside rims unless it's a silver steely, Painted rim should clamp on the lip with shop towels.

No from the looks of it, the OP agreed to the shop bringing the wheel somewhere to get prof finished- instead the shop owner let one of their guys who "used to fix wheels" handle it:

I am the kind of guy that loses sleep over scratches on my truck. But to be honest scratches on the inside of the wheel like that would not bother me. My wife who is a million times worse then me tends to be a perfectionist much like you are given they are very expensive wheels and you have that right. WHAT I WILL SAY is whenever my wife is trying to make something 10000000% perfect something always goes wrong much like what happened with them sanding bondo and spraying your wheel. While it wasnt right at all i have just always felt like chasing perfection has always bit me in the ass and i have tried to live with the very minimal imperfections in life. For example we bought a outdoor table from HD and it was ever so slightly off when building it and it looked as if you just really tightened down some bolts it would line up. In that process it put too much pressure on the tiles on how it was designed and broke a bunch of tiles on it and we had to tear it fully down and return it. Had she lived with the millimeters of it being off it would saved us hours and two different trips back to HD.

    My take...
If they said they would send it out to be fixed, and then did NOT send it out as promised, AND you just bought tires from them, ask for one or two of the tires you bought for free (refund you the cost).
And if they only did the Bondo on ONE tire, tell them "F that, I could have done that myself. This is NOT a professional fix. Give me the free tire(s) and I can rattle-can the rest myself. That will end up being cheaper for you than dealing with your insurance/bond guy, and/or the business you lose when I air my situation on your YELP page."

You kidding me? I hope I never get any crap work from you then. You can't even FIX PRO wheels man and you think making it right is them bondo filling and spray painting them? Get outta here with that. And I never said anything about getting his new tires etc for free. I said they should refund him minus their COST dude. That or replace the wheels.

What's wrong with people today is shit work for high prices, you defending that camp? The kid doing the work should have realized after the FIRST WHEEL that he was F'ing them up.

That’s not the OP who posted that, just another member who had similar issues…

but if they really needed bondo to fix the wheels the tire machine must’ve really gouged the wheels

They need to make it right by having the other 4 professionally refinished and likely need to replace the one they attempted to repair in-house if it can’t be refinished now. I went through this twice with 2 different vehicles. The shop has insurance for this very reason—Mistakes happen. Unfortunately, this happens at all shops at some time or another. My nephew is a supervisor at a Costco tire center, and says they take care of it when it happens; same with Discount Tire.

I am of the mindset if I ruin or damage my stuff, that’s on me to figure out, but I’m not paying twice for something (once when I bought it and a second time due to someone else’s mistake). Both times the shop was out ~$1k to have them repaired (2020 Lexus GX Luxury trim in for 1st tire rotation and they didn’t remove center caps and used an air gun that scuffed all around the lugs and center caps; other was my 3 Stage Hyper Gold Rays wheels on my Infiniti-they run about $900 a wheel for reference, and I specifically asked the shop ahead of time if they were comfortable replacing tires on the wheels before turning keys over).

IMO it’s not petty to ask for your property to come back without added damage.
