So as title states, if you could go back in time and buy you suspension over.

Stock SR5 RCLB completely stock 33K , looking for 70 on Road 30 off road mainly for hunting and rough logging roads. Not rock climbing w the overhand of long bead dreaming

What set up would you get. ? I've hear Icon Coils, or Billy 61 's ? If you could lay out how you would do it lmk. Like level but I put weight in bed frequently. I borrow diesel from work if I need to tow. Or would you not lift at all. Just looking for front end clearance. TIA-J

I went with an OME lift quite a few years ago.
It has been great, and it has given me absolutely no trouble.
My one caveat is that it rides really stiff.
If I had it to do all over again, I might look into a lift that also offered a smoother ride.

    Depends on budget.

Be careful of a few things:
    • Taking suspension advice from anyone that's not driving and/or familiar with 2000-2006 trucks
    • Be wary of advice from 1st Gen drivers with Double Cab trucks, since your end result will be different, they're significantly different than a reg cab truck (Access Cab is very similar, Double Cab is a diff't animal)
    • Lift results will vary depending on your drivetrain also, 4WD is heavier, if your truck is 2WD, you really should share that fact with us
    • Avoid Rough Country and other "budget" lift kits like the plague; I'd also warn you to avoid Rancho kits.
    • OME/Old Man Emu kits under-claim their numbers AND gear the "expected results" to double cab trucks, to the point some 1st Gen guys have damaged their trucks and/or had to uninstall after due to too-much lift ... something 2nd Gen drivers and newer probably won't know about, I can link you to examples here if you want!
Two questions that will help others answer you:
    1. What's your max budget here? $1,500, $2,500, $3,500?
    2. Are you looking for adjustable setup, or would static work?
You'll find some info for RC/AC trucks here.

But to summarize that more specifically to your truck, at the cheapest-budget-end, quality-ride, static lift solution that would fit your needs would be going with Bilstein 5100s. If you pair those with OME 884 springs, it'll get you in the ballpark of 1.75" - 2.25" lift in the front if you're V8/4WD, leaving you with a stance near to this, with near OEM or OEM+ ride quality: https://www.tundras.com/threads/how...4wd-w-steel-bumper.111261/page-2#post-2903374

Basically 5100 + 884 would get you near-level w/possible hint of forward rake. 5100 + 885 will probably leave you higher in front, with 1/2" to 1" or more of rear squat, which would leave you needing 1" blocks or 1" AAL out back to level it up. For other Billies, like 56xx or 61xx, consider many websites are going to give you numbers for Double Cab results, you can probably expect up to 0.5" - 1.5" more lift on your Regular Cab truck.

If you're in the mid-budget range, i.e. $2,500 max, you're in coilover dynamic lift territory, with kits like Toytec Aluma (similar/same kit as Elka), Icon, maybe a few others. Resulting ride height is negligible, since you can adjust to your liking 1.5" - 3.0" range. A lot of folks had issues with leaking Icon fronts within a year or less, which caused a big fuss on various forums, but others on this forum have used w/o issue. Big plus with this coilovers is adjustability on the fly, you can dial in the exact lift, get perfectly level side to side, etc.

$3,500 will open the door to an upgraded coilover setup, but at this point, you're dropping 30-50% of the blue book value on your suspension, and I'd argue you're getting limited bang for your buck based on the driving you say you're doing.

After you install, drive around 100 miles or so to get your suspension settled, then hit the alignment shop. Members here who know way more than me helped many others correct drivability issues with shops who're ignorant of 1st Gen quirks by getting the shop to aim in this ballpark for best handling:

    -0.1 to -0.3 camber
    2.6 to 2.8 caster
0.1 to 0.2 total toe in

There are other considerations to make if you plan to exceed 2.5" - 3.0" lift, things you'll need to change.

It's worthwhile to upgrade upper control arms with anything over 1.5" - 2.0", I personally bought SPC's uppers for my needs, I prefer their balljoint setup over others.

I would listen to everything Shifty said^

I’m running Ranchos atm and I’ve been pretty happy with them for the first 15k miles. Now the bushing at the bottom looks like it could use a replacement in the near future. Looks like it has another 15k on it, but it’s really inconvenient as a decent coilover should be hitting the 80k mile mark without this problem.

If I could go back in time, I would get Toytec 2.5s.

    For you, I recommend Bilsteins.

Damn great Forum, thank you both so much.

Truck is 4x4 , w tow package. Bone stock. I would like to spend $2k but significant quality I'd spend more. I don't think I need $3500 set up for intentions.
-I would prefer Static as life is busy and my fancy ride days are over. I had bilsteins on old 95xj and they were good to me. Thank you again for links. Very very helpful.

Also, I don't want to raise more than 2" and do not want squat. I really just want two more inches in front for clearance and quality. Improved ride and better composure for unpaved roads are the goal. This truck is not as bad as some of the later model Silverados but it's not a truck unless you can easily go over a 6" curb without wincing.

Thank you both again for taking your time to assist. I will be sure to post with results. -J

No prob. Just offering up what I wish others had told me, as a non-Double-Cab-owner. Seems like a lot of internet info and vendors are biased towards the DC models.

There are a couple of vendors who'll pre-load everything on the shocks/struts with correct isolators for a bolt-in experience, at the cost of an extra $200-ish, like 1st Gen Offroad, who most forum members have had a good experience through:

    https://www.1stgenoffroad.com/store/p769/Bilstein/OMELiftLevelKit.html#/

I'd post a link to BilsteinLifts.com who offers similar for a few more bucks, but it looks like they're out of stock right now. There may be other places to order from like WheelersOffroad.com or ToytecLifts.com but I'm not 100% positive if they've got full kits and they'll pre-assemble the fronts. I know Toytec and I think Wheelers Offroad offer small forum member discounts, just like RockAuto does. Membership has its privileges.

1st Gen Offroad also sells SPC upper control arms to boot. Good opportunity to kill 2 birds with one stone. Hardest part of the SPC UCA install appears to be clocking the ball joint properly, otherwise a no-frills button-up affair.

I must live in the wrong part of the country because nobody around here is competent enough to do custom alignment numbers especially where caster and camber are inter-related with the suspension of our trucks.

I've found two shops in the ATL area who are willing to do it out of the five I called, one was referred to here on Tundras.com in the regional GA forum. Both are north of town where I prefer not to go. If you try to find hardcore offroad shops within 30 miles of your zip, you're bound to find one that does custom alignments, or have you already tried?

Yes, but we really don’t off-road shops around here that do alignments. At least none that I’ve found.

Thanks Shifty, also yes V8. Non-trd. Suspension looks stock to me. Also, yes im used to lowering cars. I had H&R's on 85 GTI (550whp) and KW on my Evo 9 (640 to all 4). I miss those. He'll if I still has my evo I could sell it for 40k and do full build. But too old and stiff lol.

Also off topic but these interior lights suck. Where can you order some led lights for these trucks? All the kits are for DC's ... don't need a bunch of extra leds laying in glovebox -J

You're in good company then. Lowering/sport suspension is also my world. I'm no pro when it comes to lifting, but a lot of the fundamental concepts (at least things you need to do along with geometry change) are similar, and some extras you can do, like body drops, translate in the form of body lifts.

Also, former GTI VR6 owner here, but slightly newer, here's mine w/Koni sport kit, though I sold it off many moons ago. Big fan of Belltech, Koni, Eibach, AirRide here, depending what it's going on and what the end goal is.

I'm in the less is more camp. I probably would lean towards Bilstein 4600's and 884's.

With reasonable lift, you may not need SPC uppers.

Depending on how much you load the bed down and how often, maybe some air bags. Not a huge fan of AAL on worn stock leafs.

I run Superbrightleds in everything from the dash to the interior lights with the exception of the main dome light. Main dome light gets one like this (though I haven't bought the one at this link before).
    Link

They're cheap but I've ran multiple ones in different vehicles and I've never had any issues with them and they are stupid bright. The one at the link alone would give you a very significant upgrade for cheap.

Thanks, I'm shopping around price for Billy 884/5 combo now. I will update with pictures for anyone interested in results and pictures. I'm going to go ahead and do the uppers while I'm at it. Appreciate the info.

I’d go 5100’s. It’s what I did on my 01 AC, great middle compromise between on/off road and nice height increase. If I could do it over again, I would do SPC's, Bilstein 6112's and Dobinsons springs. 5100s got me lift and balanced capability for a price I could afford at the time.

Rear bed weight sag is real… My rear springs are tired. Want some ArchiveGarage shackleton replacements. Probably my next investment, after a new battery.

Where do you gents find the best price on Billy's? Any tips? Also I just received my new pro comp 69's. They look decent for a dirt cheap wheel. The finish does scratch easy. I gently cleaned and wiped w carnuba wax (yes w clean micro) and already fine scratches lol. Not too concerned as it's a old truck. I do like the older styling of the wheel. The center caps are too long imo, more flush would look better. Thanks dudes-J 20220906_165220.jpg

    Is that a 308?

"Cheapest" 5100s would be gambling with potentially getting counterfeits off scAmazon, and would also entail you loading up your own. scAmazon, fleaBay, and Walmart's online store fronts are havens for counterfeit parts, especially automotive and appliance parts.

You cool with assembling the strut from pieces? That'll also drop the cost by a couple hundred.

I did mine WAY back when, ended up with just the fronts at 2", enough to level out the stance and enable a 265/75/r16 tire to not rub. I love the look and it didn't affect the ride

Yes, 83 euro spec 308. 1st gear randomly disappeared in dog leg. Hoping it's in linkage. It's a family members anyway, not my style but I've ripped it a few times and enjoy power ...nothing and having to work when driving. I'm too tall for it anyways at 5'11 lol.

Thanks for advice. I guess I meant best deal reputable source. China parts drive me nuts. I would rather just pay to have them pre assembled. I worked on cars in my early 20's and that's something I'd spend a lil extra for ease of install. I do plan to install them myself and prog have access to one if assembly overpriced. I think I have it narrowed down to 2 options. :

    Toytec
    Billy/884

-I'm sure this has been covered and I apologize if it has, but is there any difference with 884 and Dobinson springs? Local guy was also preaching Eibach 's. Anyone have experience with those?
    Thanks again. -J

I'm sorry. What's your set up in front? That's what I'm looking for level. Are AC heavier or lighter than longbeds if V8 and 4x4? Assuming a lil heavier. ?

I love Eibach for lowering/sport purpose. I have no experience with Eibach in lift applications. Toytec sells the Eibach lift kit, but there've only been a couple of outliers here who've bought it and they don't post regularly, none I recall were AC/RC folks, it was all DC (Double Cab).

OME vs. Dobinsons: Main difference being color, maybe? Looks like Dobinsons coils may be a bit thicker, I'm too lazy to look up specs, they'll have them at the website, compare to OME's spec grid I posted above.

A few guys here are using 5100+Dobinsons on AC/RC trucks, @Tundra2 is one of them, on his RC longbed. I think you'll find all the Dobinsons springs will give you a taller lift, closer to 5100/885. RC and AC truck weights are close enough, I reckon.

If you want a reputable source, someone you can throw specific questions at, someone who'll pre-assemble for $185, you may want to give 1stGenOffroad.com a holler. I'm not saying it's the best source, just a trustworthy source many members have had a great experience with with the one or two who had a weird experience (it's the case w/every reputable vendor)

He does pre-assembled 5100 with Dobinsons, OME, and potentially other spring sets and can potentially speak to it. Just know, he may have the most experience with results you get with the heavier DC trucks and Sequoias, so I'd start the conversation with "I have the lighter 1st gen access cab Tundra, and a lot of guys are hitting my desired lift height with OME 884 springs, but I could be happy a little lower up front with OME 883. Is there any benefit or reason to go with a Dobinsons or Eibach spring comparable to the OME 883-884?"

My take on it, though, is this: If a number of members have been happy with the ride and response of 5100 + OME 88x springs, stick with what's proven to work.

Back is stock all the way, front is a coil over package from Aggressive Suspension in I believe Orange Cal. Just a bolt in setup, with Fox shocks for a max 2.5 lift maybe 3 if you lock it out but way too firm for me, 2" is what we set it at, been on my truck for over 20 years now, had the shocks rebuilt once. Oh and its 2 whl. drive and I ove the truck so I'm keeping it till I get too old then my grand son gets it in a couple of years

PS Tires are 265/75 /R16 on stock rims with no rubbing, good luck

It looks like you've made your decision, but I'll chime in with my $0.02. The 5100 and Dobinsons seems to be growing in popularity, especially with 4Runners (which is what I used to drive). I was never that impressed with my 5100s on my 4runner. I heard the 6112s are a better shock to run and a better ride. I think it could be worth the extra $$$ to get the 6112/5160 kit.
Personally, when I got my Tundra I researched and shopped, and went with bolt on ADS coilovers in the front and Fox in the rear. I would maybe consider ADS in the rear eventually, but can't say I'd change a thing. The ride is excellent on road and off with plenty of travel.

How long did you wait to have ADS put yours together? I went to their website while shopping around, and think I remember seeing they build-to-suit, avg turnaround was 2-3 months from order to ship, I think?

Price tag was above $3k for my '06, it was the only big turnoff other than the lead time. Both could be off-putting for some.

I had to wait a little while because it was 2020 and the retailer I went through (Vivid Racing) was absolutely terrible. When I had decided to go with ADS I called them up and they said they had some on the shelf and to shop online and go with the best price because they would have to be drop-shipped. I went through Vivid and they could never get the PO submitted to ADS. It took 2 months and ADS was kind enough to get involved and make them finally submit the PO correctly, and then they shipped and arrived within days.
Long story, short(ish) but call them up and see if they have them. Their customer service has been great the handful of times I've had questions or needed help.

Price tag is a little steep, but for me it was worth it. I don't know what OPs budget is, but that's why I suggested the 6612/5160 package.

Yea im still stuck in no man's land between toytec coulovers and 6112. There rely not much of a price difference. Basically $100.

The one tricky part is , people I know are familiar say you can go 2" without upgraded UCA'a like people on here and local 4wp store ( who I planned to have align it after I install), toytec said must have UCA non negotiable.

At this point in life I don't want to deal with diff drop, cv issues so I'm leaning towards 6112's atm. You guys have been a big help for sure. Shout to Shifty for providing links w relevant reviews.
