Westcott lift rides harsh!

I see you have a Pro…what the lift that Westcott’s kit gives tonthe Pro?

It’s 3/1 for regular SR5 OR, etc for instance so is that the same for the Pro?

 

So the pro comes with 1.1” of lift in the front stock. The wescott leveling kit claims it adds an additional 2.5” in the front and 1” in the back

 

Its funny you say that because I was just at the F150 forum discussing running Load Range E tires and their pressures. Ford has several F150's that come with factory E-range tires and the door placard says 55 psi and the door sticker of that truck only has a 6400 lb GVWR. Ram also has their 1500 Rebel that comes with 275/70R18 Duratrac E range and they run 55 front, 45 rear, again, probably around the same GVWR as a Tundra in the mid 7000 lb range.

The issue with running the E range tires at low pressure is that the stiffer side walls generate more heat as they flex. If you are rolling down the road at 35 psi then you are probably under inflated. Also consider that the front end of a Tundra is probably 3500 lbs when the truck is empty no one is in the cab. With a driver and passengers I can see the front axle being at close to 4000 lbs and so you should have the tires to at least 2000 lbs load each. Correct me if I am wrong but I suspect that would be over 40 psi on a Load Range E.

 

On the TRD Pro model is there a benefit to upgrading the UCA’s? If the base truck has a 1.1” lift plus the Westcott lift your exceeding 3” of total lift. Isn’t that exceeding what the stock UCA’s can handle without premature failure?

I read that also, but when you look at UCA’s such as Icon they say below. Is it not required but a good idea?

Yeah based on every inflation chart I have seen that would put the tires around 2000 lbs of load capacity each. The front of half ton crew cabs are usually somewhere in the mid 3000's empty so with a cab full of people could be pushing 4k. My 2014 F150 cat scaled completely empty at 3440 lbs on the front axle. No one and nothing in the cab, just a full tank of fuel.

 

Ya I wasn't a fan of the Westcott ride quality. Rides perfectly fine on flat ground or over small bumps and dips. But over speed bumps or anything where the front end gets light/rebounds fast like going over big railroads tracks it rides like shit. The ride was worse though with the factory 20in wheels and tires but got better when I went with the 295/70R18 taller tire I feel.

 

The e rated tire plus tire pressure and the wider tire has a lot to do also with your ride quality. You probably feel the road more compared to stock tire.

 

I have not seen any proof or studies that the stiffer sidewalls of E load tires generate more heat at 35 PSI compared to D or C load tires. In general, a 10-degree F increase in temp increases air pressure by 1 PSI. It is not uncommon to see tire air pressure to go up by 5 to 7 PSI after driving for 30 minutes and it's probably even a higher air pressure increase in sweltering summer heat.

RAM Rebels and other RAM 1500 trucks recommend 36-38 PSI. In my opinion, situations when tires need to be inflated over 45 PSI are on heavier GVWR trucks and/or when you're using lower profile tires with wheel diameters of 22 inches or bigger.

 

Not sure if this is normal but I think my ride actually got smoother after installing my C4 front bumper

 

I had a 2019 ram rebel as a rental. I even took a picture of the door sticker when I realized it was E range tires and it was 55psi front/45 rear.





Here is the F150 sticker I saw on the F150 Forum. Only a 6400 lb GVWR on this truck.



Yeah I am sure a wider tire might be different pressure to get it to sit flat on the ground, especially if you run a narrower wheel. I run 37x12.5R17 Geolandar G003's on my 4Runner and they are rated at 3525 lbs at 50 psi. That is a considerably higher load rating at a much lower pressure than any of their Metric sized Load Range E G003's. A LT295/70R17E G003 is 3195 lbs at 80 psi.

I also run LT315/70R17 C KO2 Raptor takeoffs on my F150 and I know the factory Raptor door sticker says 38 psi but those tires are rated at 2535 lbs at 45 psi, so the factory pressure should still put them around 2200 lbs.

All I am saying is that the tire inflation pressure for an 80 psi Load Range E tire, even on a light duty truck, probably needs to be north of 40 psi at a minimum. OEM's are specing them at 45+ psi.

The TRD pro comes with E rated tires.

 

Can you provide a picture of your door sticker showing tire spec and PSI please. I purchased Pro rims and E rated LT tires and would be interested to see Toyotas recommended tire pressure.

 

I'd recheck that. I believe we have the SL version of the Falken Wildpeak AT3W as they are not the LT model with the increased load rating.

 

What load rating does your Pro tire have on the sidewall because every one I have seen has a 116T load rating which is not the version of the E rated Wildpeaks that come with 125/122S rating. The E rated Wildpeaks are significantly heavier.

 

Mine defiantly had E rated tires. I moved up one rating to F

 

E rating is just to tell you the ply count and the max pressure the tire can hold.

1. E-rated tires refer to the load rating, which is how much pressure the tires can handle at max load.
2. This rating is only used for Light Truck tires.
3. Passenger-type tires use a simpler SL (Standard Load) and XL (Extra Load) rating.
4. An E-rating means the tires can handle anywhere between 60 – 85 PSI.
5. For the max load capacity, you’ll need to take a look at the load index, which is a numeric code between 0 – 150. The higher the number, the more weight it can carry.

 

I have a 22 TRD Pro with Westcott designs lift the ride quality was shit after installed!! I ended up doing upper control arms and it was still kinda harsh so I did an icon swaybar drop kit which helped because the swaybar would bind but it’s still nothing like the ride from stock. Also truck is on 35x12.5r18 Toyo RT and had to change rims to be able to run UCA. Hoping Fox comes out with some 3.0 coil overs or something

 

I’m running icon stage 6 now and really happy with it, night and day difference. If you’re looking for 3.0 shocks Icon has theirs out now.

 

I just did a quick google search, but... it's a preload collar, right? So I'm not sure what else you were expecting.

ETA: if you want to lift the vehicle and not shittify the ride, you need extended coilovers. Many choices there depending on what you're going for.

 

yeah, its the rebound that comes with the nature of a preload design. i've come to terms with it so i can keep avs for now. lol.

An aftermarket suspension lift designed by a team with ???? credentials and budget, doesn’t function as well as the stock suspension that Toyota automotive engineers with a huge budget and testing processes and facilities designed?

So with all this said, has anyone opted to buy the Toyota TRD lift kit and install it? I'm a novice at all this and do not claim to have any real experience with lifting a truck. I would like to improve the stance purely for cosmetic reason. I noticed that TRD sells a 3-in lift kit for our tundras. Would it make sense just to use a TRD designed and tested system over going third party?

This is a good thread for you on the TRD Lift Kit. I didn't do the Westcott simply because, while I did like the look and price, I could not justify putting it on my truck because of the pretty consistent comments about how it impacts the ride quality (stiff, harsh, etc). These are new / expensive trucks and someone I was talking with about it back with I first got my 2022 Tundra a year ago and does a TON of lifts kept telling me to wait.

I don't think I have heard anyone complain about the quality and overall ride change with the TRD lift - YES we all wish it was less $$$...but the install time is significant and you retain a warranty. They spent like 3-4 hours just doing the Safety Sense calibration. I did just install mine, so haven't been able to personally drive it yet, but will post an update in this thread once I do - I am glad I did it this way after everything I have read...my next choice probably would have been an ICON.

 

That is not an E rated tire. That particular "E" mark is to show the tire complies with European requirements.
