Off road vs 4*4 - 2022 Tundra

    Hello all,

    I am new to truck community and I recently bought a 2022 Tundra Limited HV which is 4*4.

    unfortunately I didn’t get vehicle with off road package or TRD. I will be driving 99% on city roads and I wish I could take my truck on scenic roads/mountains roads etc. I don’t see me going to any off road track. I live in Texas and I haven’t seen any snow here except once or twice that too very minimum inches and the roads not drivable here in that situation either.

    My question to the truck experts is there an option for me to add TRD Pro or Off road package aftermarket? Is it even worth it? BTW my Tundra came with standard bed 6.5 which I noticed only after I purchased the truck. I know what you all thinking I have to compete with 3 other potential buyers while I was negotiating mine and I rushed it. I like the truck overall. It comes with 14 inch multimedia screen and the digital dashboard as it is Hybrid with panoramic sunroof and JBL systems.Only drawback is you loose the storage space under the rear seat as it is place for battery.

    Please let me know on the off road package recommendations. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome and congratulations!!
    Based on the info you presented I personally would just suggest upgrading to a nice set of all-terrain tires. Being that your truck is 4 wheel drive that will be more than enough to deal with what you're describing as your off-road needs. No need for a lift, suspension, or any more in my opinion.

    Thanks, I was worried not having off road or TRD package might bring my truck value down.

    Hybrid and limited trim...you have nothing to worry about for value!

    Spend a grand on some good tires, make half of it back by selling the takeoffs and enjoy the heck out of it!

    Add your own suspension and be leaps and bounds ahead. The only bad part is you have no locker.

    it has mult-link rear suspension. Not sure if this is same as locker. Sorry, I am new to trucks world. Thanks for your reply.

    No, that’s the type of rear suspension

    you don’t need a locker for normal dirt roads

    The TRD OR package is something that can be confusing. The difference in off road capabilities between a standard 4x4 model and one with the TRD OR package is probably pretty close to zero (excluding situations that might require the locking differential, but even then the traction control systems are pretty good). Even the tires on the Limited TRD OR, that are called Wildpeak AT’s, are not the actual Wildpeak AT’s that you’d get if you bought those “same” tires and installed them on your truck.

    I highly suspect that you are overthinking the situation, and would not see any real difference from having TRD OR.

    For what it’s worth, I’ve faced enough situations in my lifestyle and recreation that not having a locking diff sucked so TRD OR is a requirement for me. Not that you can’t add an aftermarket locker, but it’s cheaper and covered under warranty to get it from the factory. It always irked me that the previous generation Tundras had a TRD OR package, but all it was was wheels, crappy shocks, and bedside decals. This generation finally adds the locker.

    I have a 4x4 SR5, and I don’t have the TRD OR package, either.

    I took my truck to Colorado in July and drove it on two unpaved mountain roads, one of which was fairly steep, loose, and pretty rugged. My truck had no issues.

    Considering folks have been driving 4x4 Tundras off road without rear lockers (which is the only major difference) for 20+ years now, I wouldn’t worry too much. I suspect our trucks will get us anywhere we need to go.

    100%. ive wheeled my 4Runner pretty hard without ever putting it in 4x4 or locking the diff. A good set of tires that are properly air’d down can get you pretty far
