Over 8K miles, brand new?

I pick up my SR later this evening and I was going through the Dealership service portal to schedule maintenance (wheel installation) I input the VIN and it popped up with 8540miles. This feels like a lot for a newly built vehicle. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

 

I bought mine at 5k miles. Definitely not normal, but it happens. It is usually a demo or a vehicle one of the upper brass uses as their daily driver. Once it is titled, it cannot be sold as new (I believe). The wait times for a 1794 helped in my decision since mine was on the lot and ready to go.

Mine was MSRP. But the dealership I bought it at was an MSRP dealership. I guess it all depends on how much you want it.

 

My truck had under 20 miles on it when I picked it up. I would not be happy paying brand new pricing for a truck that has been driven a bunch already. That’s just me

Interesting. To my knowledge it’s being sold as new. Im emailing the dealer now to inquire further. Pretty shady if they are trying to pass it off as brand new.

 

Then as TWade (above) said it was probably a demo/dealer car not titled. I bought a “new” Honda Pilot with 5k miles on it years ago that was the sales manager’s personal car…it was fine…but well discounted.

 

That would really bother me and not sure I would pay "new" price. I usually drive about 10k miles a year, so that is basically a year of the truck being driven, so it is not new.

Buybacks are happening as well, so I would confirm it was not a returned or buy back. I dont know how all that works, but if it has never been titled before, I would think it was a demo.

 

I wouldn't be buying a new truck with 8400 miles on it. Those are the most important miles that truck will see. Definitely need a major price discount for me to even consider plus extra warranty.

 

Mine had 3 miles on it when it was delivered in July. I already have 7500mi on it. So no, its not uncommon or unusual to have that many miles by this time of year. Likely mostly highway miles if that makes you feel better but I would definitely ask for a discount. Im already almost to my second oil change. Plus, thats a good chunk of the powertrain warranty eaten up if you dont have an extended.

 

Them taking advantage of "not titled" loophole doesn't make it new with 8500 miles. That's a used truck

 

I worked at a local Nissan dealer in new vehicle sales a few years ago, my first sales job, the managers would all drive the nice expensive cars and trucks and try to sell them as NEW with 5,000+ miles on them, I told them it’s a used vehicle and they hated hearing that, then they would argue with me and that it is new because it was never titled. Don’t buy it, they don’t take care of them or ever wash them. This was in the winter time. I had a few customers come in and want to see the vehicles and the managers had to clean all their crap out of the vehicle and it was trashed as usual. It really pissed me off. Customers would say hey this is a used car and I said I know but manager X says blah blah blah. Lol. I was lucky and found another job quickly, not in car sales. Think about this, these guys were going to the gym or whatever getting all sweaty and gross in these new cars, fast food wrappers/bags all over the interior. They had no seat covers on the seats, road salt all the time never washed, they treat them like used junk.

 

Oh hell no. Unless it’s heavily discounted don’t buy it. Even if it’s discounted $5k I personally wouldn’t get it. They’ll always say it was driven by a manager. But it was also probably used for test drives. And on almost every test drive, you know the guy wants to see how good the 0-60 is. I’d choose a used truck over a demo truck.

 

I understand everyone's reluctance to buy a "new" vehicle with miles. But these are weird times. As stated several times in this forum, used Tundras are selling for more than new ones. Only a few lucky ones are finding Tundras at MSRP. I am sure if the OP passes on it, it will still sell pretty quickly at the price the dealership is asking.

 

Dealers like this piss me off, I hope you can get out of the deal.

 

I’d walk away. Like someone said above, these early miles are very important. It’s not just the mileage, it’s that all of the miles have been driven by someone (or multiple people) who didn’t pay for the truck. You can bet no one honored the break-in period or drove it like they care for it.

Mine had 3 on the ODO as well.

 

It’s 2022 man. Morals are out the window. Look around! Walk away.

 

Mine had 2 miles on it. It rolled off trailer and sit for most part. Till I test drove it.

 

Unless you are walking back and forth to work, wait and get one with less than 20 miles on it. You will get one. Besides, the longer you have to wait, the better chance you have of them working out any bugs or kinks.

 

Prices are coming down soon. Be patient.

 

False alarm thankfully! Only has/had 13 miles on it. No idea why the Toyota website was giving that random mileage. Very happy with my first Tundra!

Cool, I'd never take an 8500 mile car as new.

 

How’d they let a demo get that many miles on it? Never seen one much past 4-5k.

It’s sold as new because it’s never been titled. Still qualifies for new rates on financing.

BUT AND THIS IS A BIG BUT

The warranty may have started from the in service date. Not the day you buy it. So you may have lost several months and 8500 miles of your warranty.

No way in hell I’d be buying a demo at msrp.

I was about to be that A-hole responding without reading the whole thread, but good thing I didn't. Congrats on your new Tundra!!

BUT (for others that might be in that situation for real)- NOOOOO, you should not have accepted that deal or any other car from the dealer. That's more miles than my 6 month old Tundra. I don't care what is legally titled, that is a USED car. Walk and don't look back.

 

I’ll post one when I get a bit more light this am. It was after 930 when we left the dealership, so it was pretty dark. I was so excited I couldn’t sleep. I Woke up at 1am, so I decided to go for a quick ride around my area. No cars on the rode, so I opened it up a tad bit. Sheeeesh! Lol. I’ve never had a vehicle with this kinda power. I literally jerked back into the seat like that scene in the original, The Fast and the Furious. Huge cake-eating grin all over my face . I love it. I’ve been up since btw lol. With two kids, under two, gonna be a long day.

 

My 2020 currently has 8400 miles… I bought it in 2020 with 4 miles… any new car with over double digit miles seems sketchy to me unless it’s sold as a demo vehicle
