So I been having my TRD skid plate on for a few months now and I noticed some creaking noises after initial install. When I got my cat plate installed it went away. Recently got my oil change and the creaking is back and it sounds like suspension. I’ve checked around and I cannot see anything loose. It is annoying as hell and only happens when I turn my steering wheel at a stop or drive thru. Any ideas?

I know it was common in the prior gen. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same way

It was a common noise from the skid plate? Was there ever a fix?

I believe it squeaked at the bolts so I think the fix was rubber washers or something

I posted about this a while back. You need to put a washer between the skid plate and the frame (I used stiff rubber washers)

You can also use some thick foam padding between the frame and the skid plate.

Manufacturing tolerances seem to be slightly different because other Tundras have no noises from their skid plate installs....originally I thought it was the Westcott lift but the dealer diagnosed it @ the plate

It's probably from a small amount of frame twist like prior vehicles. Easiest thing to do is snag some poly bushings from McMaster-Carr to eliminate the metal on metal contact. That usually fixes it.

Mine did creaked and I too thought it was suspension. Like dry bushings or something. Definitely skid plate. I put some grease between the plate and the frame and tightened up the bolts. No more noise for 6 weeks and +/- 3k miles.

I had the same problem on my '18. I retorqued all the hardware (very important to follow torque specs), and sprayed lubricant around all the hardware and never had a problem again. The problem with the skids for the '22s is that there is not an access port for the filter, and I would almost guarantee that when they put the skid back in place, they just use an impact and call it good (most likely strip threads in the process). Even though the prior gen TRD skids had the access panel, dealer service was still dropping the skid to change the oil. I reminded them not to do that, and it seemed to stop.

I take the skid plates off before I drop it off for any service. Same way I remove the center caps off the wheels. I just don’t want to have the conversation with the service tech about how they scratched my wheels, or stripped my skid plate bolts.
