RS3000 Factory Alarm malfunctioning

I have a 2002 AC with the RS3000 factory-installed keyless entry module/alarm system. I have one original key fob with FCC ID BAB237131-022. After 20+ years of faithful service, I've started to experience random weirdness from the alarm system and key fob. The range on the key fobs has never been great, but the human chin-antenna mod does help a little. The main issue I have now is that batteries are going dead in the key fob really quickly. Batteries used to last a really long time, but now they seem to only last a month or so - and its getting worse over time. I replaced the battery in my key fob a week ago, and it stopped working yesterday.

The alarm has also been triggering at random times. I parked the truck this morning, and pressed the button to lock the truck on the key fob (with a fresh battery from last Thurs) and it set off the alarm. I did not hit the panic button, trust me, I have done that many times, and this time I didn't. Even stranger, I could not get the alarm to shut off. Usually when I accidentally hit the panic button, all I have to do is put the key in the ignition and turn the key. This time, that didn't work. I even started the truck up, and the alarm still kept going off. I had to pull the key completely out, reinsert the key, and fire up the truck three times before it finally stopped the alarm.

Any ideas what to do to troubleshoot this?

 

I had the exact same issue earlier this year. Alarm randomly went off and would not shut off. It took several minutes of trial and error before it would shut off. It hasn't happened since.

I wish I could be more help. I have no clue what caused it and I forgot about it since it hasn't happened again.

Have you tried unhooking the battery for 30 minutes to let the computer reset?

Your fob may have similar issue.

But if you want to test the overnight alarm-going-off, remove the battery from your remote when not in use and see if it's the cause.

I suspect your remote is dying but maybe I'm nuts, or maybe it's shorting, per that post I linked.

 

I suspect you may be right. Thanks for pointing me towards that thread. As it describes there, I did notice two tiny holes where that contact had worn through the tape, so it's possible there was some very intermittent shorting occurring. I put a piece of electrical tape over the holes, which didn't seem to affect the operation of the key fob positively or negatively. But my key fob is cracked in a few places, and just generally beat up, so it could be something else going on anyway. I haven't had the alarm go off since disconnecting the truck's battery for 30 minutes to allow the computer to reset a week or so ago. Either way, I still plan to replace my key fob. Hopefully that will do the trick, and maybe I'll get a little more range out of the new fobs. I have to be right up in my truck's grille or my original fob doesn't work to well.
