With synthetic 75w-85 in the rear end, stock tires, no lift, a tonneau cover, and brakes that aren't sticking, it shouldn't go much below 13 in town. Even here with a 5 mile commute on winter gas in snowstorms it still stays above 12.

Touch your wheels after driving and see if it is really hot. I think the rear parking brakes can stick if the lever is rusty. You'll probably be able to smell it burning if it is that bad. I just noticed this with mine and I'm not sure what to do yet. My rear wheels get way hotter than my front wheels which doesn't seem normal to me.

285/75 comes out to about 34.8"/11" in tires.

I’m a fan of skinnies. I have fat 35s and I hate ‘em. I have 315/70/17 and they are just too big for my taste. Kickin’ around the idea of 255/80/17 skinny 33s.

It's the perfect size if you spend any substantial amount of time off pavement. All the sidewall of a 35 (just a hair more in reality), but narrow enough to keep your tight turn radius, and it won't take as big a hit on mpg.

I drop 3 mpg when I went from 255/70 to 275/70…I’m thinking about changing rim and tires too…lol

I appreciate the advice. My biggest problem with selling it is I have the truck fully paid off. I just pay for gas and insurance. I originally bought it for 26k (which was a pretty good deal) back before gas prices went crazy and started working 50 hour weeks while in high school to get it paid off. It’s a hard decision because I worked so hard for it and it would legitimately hurt me seeing it drive away with someone else. I might just buy a motorcycle or something for everyday use.

sounds great! i ended up with the tires i have because my buddy sold me a set of 5 alpha equipt echoes with basically new toyo OC 315/70/17s for $1000. it was a deal I couldn't pass up, especially because i needed new tires anyway and really wanted 17s over my stock 18s. win win win. i have ST maxx 255/80/17 on my 4runner and love 'em. Thought I'd go with the same on my Tundra because skinny 34s don't really exist... do they?

14.4 MPG on 612 mile trip with U-Haul 5x8 and Crewmax bed full of heavy things covered with a tonneau. Mostly flat the entire way. Stayed close to speed limit the whole trip.

One thing to keep in mind is that traffic in SoCal is on a different level from "traffic" in other parts of the country. Cruising to work at 40mph vs stop and go rush hour traffic for 2 hours a day will make a huge difference in mpg.

socal here and on 35's. around 13 mpg but I drive at 70 mph most of the time and no abrupt acceleration unless it's getting on the freeway.
I also have a camper shell. Might help with wind drag vs open bed.

I was getting terribly-crappy-mpg when I got 35s. Re-geared to 4:88 and I'm pretty much back to just the crappy-mpg range at approx 14 mpg hwy. Although I didn't see a huge benefit right away as it took time for the computer to adjust, probably after 3k miles or so, which for me is like 6-8 months lol.

And speaking of S.D., I have to drive out there tomorrow (from Temecula) so that should be a whole lot of fun!
