Looks like I need to change my username!

I get a call from my dealer yesterday. They said hey, we've got a 2022 TRD PRO in Lunar Rock on the way. We want to offer it to you for your 22 TRD PRO Solar Octane. When I bought mine, I told them I wasn't crazy about the color but I'd take it. I have 3500 miles on it now that I got from them in June (for MSRP). Luckily, I haven't yet got running boards or a tonneau cover put on mine yet. The Lunar Rock version has TRD running boards already installed, only difference is it doesn't have a safe which I don't use mine anyway and don't really like it to be honest.

The sales manager is a friend of mine, he basically told me his dealership is against selling new for over MSRP, but can sell mine used for whatever he wanted LOL. So, I've basically been driving my truck for the past 3 months for free. They will turn around a make a nice profit on mine used while I get a new truck in a color I liked better from the start. Seems like a no brainer to me!

I think I'm going to ask for a tonneau cover to put on to sweeten the pot, what do you guys think?

Im sure financing has changed a little since you bought yours - What would a new finance deal look like? Did they mention any of that?

I have 2.75% now the new rate is 2.99%, I owe $40K on mine, so I calculated that difference to be $200 over 5 years, which is moot because I will pay it off sooner than that I always do.

I'd say the dealer is motivated by money as well, otherwise they'd just sell the new one for MSRP. They called me remember. I went on to YAA website and put in my VIN and got an estimate of $88K for my current truck. I don't think a few hundred for a cover will move the needle for them.

Can't hurt to ask, right? You already kind of have an upper hand since they called you to make a deal. If you like lunar rock that much more, go for it.

If they don't do the tonneau cover just buy it from the parts department and install it. I put mine on last weekend. For some reason when you try to order it online it now says, "no longer available". They did this before and made it a dealer only orderable part so they could mark it up and get the install labor. They usually try and get about 1,500 - 1,800 installed. I printed out the below link, to it to my local dealer and they beat the price (gave me 20% off). I paid $956. Ordered it at 4PM and it showed up at the dealer the next morning at 10AM. Took 1.5 hours for me to install. I had the older gen cover on my 2018 and I will tell you this model is far superior.

That is what I thought, but when I look on Bak's website that cover still shows under development or production. Says "Available soon"

Lunar is the unique pro color 22 only.
Solar is offered this year and next model year.

Oh I no longer have a blue Si and still use this screen name everywhere.

How much was your topper? I got one quote back for a Snugtop Rebel for $3000+tax+install. It seems most caps for 2022’s are in $3k+ range.

LR is more unique with the '21's as it is Pro only. '22 has it across the line, not just the Pro.

That's exactly what my local dealer does, MSRP for new and no holds barred for used. I recently posted on another thread, they traded a new Capstone for a TRD Pro with 2000 or so miles on it. They listed the TRD for $99,900 and it didn't sit on the lot for a week!

Experiences vary, but many Bak covers are having issues as of late. I tried two F1s and they leaked like a sieve. I'd say don't get greedy and invest in a better cover.

It makes me wonder if they’re now doing the unique Pro colors for two years and staggering them:

    ‘21 & ‘22: Lunar Rock
    ‘22 & ‘23: Solar Octane
    ‘23 & ‘24: Lime Rush?

There should be no sales tax since you only pay the difference between the trade and the new vehicle which will be zero here. The plate will be transferred to the new vehicle, the fee is $35, which I can negotiate as well.

You could always just go in and buy the Lunar Rock truck straight out, you said they dont charge over MSRP right? Go buy the truck at sticker, take yours and sell it yourself. Ive got a Capstone on the lot now that the MSRP is $76K on, they are selling at auction used for between $89500 and $95000. Get the color you want and make a profit on your other one.

My first thought was oh great they are doing me a favor by getting me this color I wanted, but the reality is I am the buyer they NEED because I have the more valuable asset right now. I thought about selling mine and making a profit before they even called me, but then am I willing to drive something else right now that I would like the same as this one.

I was just going by what you were saying about them willing to sell you another TRD Pro at sticker. If thats the case then buy the new one then sell yours afterwards

Yes, this dealership will only sell at sticker, so I'm sure there's plenty of folks that would like to to buy it at sticker here, but since they NEED my truck to make a bigger profit, it has been reserved for me. So me getting the new one is contingent on me selling them the used one. With the addition of the $1000 running boards on the new one, I'm happy with that trade.

How are dealers able to crank up the price on used trucks so much? Wouldn't there be more demand for new ones?

Supply and Demand (and wait time)

Consider the Porsche 911R which had a limited run of 993 units (?) as it was $325,000 new (+ or -) but on the used market 6months later was getting upwards of $1.5 million

    No one could get one

Only if they are on the lot. The general mentality is “I want it, I see it, I buy it”
If all the dealers can get is used, they Jack the prices up because they’re available to sell immediately rather than wait for a new truck to come in. Last year I was shopping for a 21 and the used trucks were selling more than new ones because the used were on the lot. If you can afford to wait for a new vehicle then you typically can make out better than a barely used vehicle. I could have sold my 21 back to the dealer right After I signed the papers for more than I bought it for. It’s a crazy world we live in right now.

I'm guessing because people are lining up to throw money at them. Otherwise, a few might try but would quickly cave when inventory stopped moving.

I keep reading about how bad the economy is and how everyone is supposedly starving to death, but when people are lining up to pay ridiculous money for vehicles... Nobody scoffs at dropping $80 - $90k for a used half ton truck, but bitch and moan incessantly when gas hits $5 a gallon? Something don't add up. Weird times we're living in.

I ordered a bakflip Mx4 from realtruck, com and can confirm it fits the 2022. Installed in about an hour or so - quite easy.
