Damn. That doesn't sound like it was fun at all. The T7, however, sounds like a solid all rounder. Maybe someday.

Well, my inner child is winning again.

For the last week I've been watching the bike videos, and feeling the tug for a fun vehicle. I've recently given up on getting ahold of a Challenger now that they are ending the production run, so I've decided to tentatively explore different bikes. A cheap little dual sport that I can thrash around and such, but I always came back to the same bikes I was toying with throughout this thread.

And then I got a sign. Randomly, on my way out of a grocery store parking lot I see my first ever CB500X in person. It was an older one in the desert brown with orange like this pic, but had a soft bag on top of the tail, tank bag, crash bars, knobby tires, and a smokin' hot blonde riding it. Crazy thing, didn't even care about the blonde! Couldn't look away from the bike. Completely love at first site... I went a block or two down the road, turned around and went back for a second look she was gone. 100% taking it as a sign, and actively looking for gear and a bike.

No better time than now. I'm down on 2 wheels for the rest of the year. Deer tboned me and cracked the lower crankcase on a low side. Shattered my wrist and ended up picking up a plate and 7 bolts in it. RIP

I didn't post here...but yeah...had no idea what hit me a little over 2 months ago. Backroad at 50mph on a straightaway next thing I'm seeing is sky asphalt sky asphalt sky asphalt. Low sided the bike and poor design of the bike (I'm finding now it's common on clutch side low sides) caused the stator cover to shatter and the bolt at the 7/8 o'clock position cracked the lower crankcase about 2" in an L shape. Only 1/4" of it would cause any real issue the rest is superficial. If the stator covor didnt shatter, it would have been fine (or if I had some case sliders on....) Local race shop is gonna tig it for me as it's primarily a track bike so as long as I'm not dumping a quart of oil through the weld, I'm okay with the quick fix. Otherwise it's 3k for a new engine and I'd have to swap it...not worth it for a 6.5k bike.

Damn. That must have been a hell of a ride. The confusion, the pain, the "WTF happened to my bike!".... Would insurance not pay to get it fixed up?

Sucks that the bike took a beating, but even worse that you got busted up. I assume you were wearing gear and it took the brunt of it? All in all, I'm glad your "ok" after all that.

Liability roadway insurance with track coverage (for medical). Not worth paying premium prices for a cheap bike imo.

Everything but a suit lol. Gloves stopped my hand and wrist from being completely cut off by a guardrail post (shattering was the next option it took lol), same for my boots. I was grabbing dinner so only a long sleeve moto shirt and jeans....Road rash for days. Not pictured is the 1/8" of flesh missing from my left butt cheek lol. Everything seen below was extremely superficial and has more or less healed completely with no scarring...minus my left cheek. That's permanently red for the rest of my life lol.

Been riding the roadway since I was 19, 30 now (but been on the dirt track since I was 7). Only my second accident and with this one not really being my fault...I'd say I'm winning. The first I low sided in an intersection after snow melted away at 5mph years ago...felt like a huge dumby.

Now at the track...I've been down more times than I have fingers and toes lol. Comes with the territory.

That doesn't look like a good time at all. How are you feeling this far out from it? Will the wrist hardware impede your detailing or day job? Sorry, don't mean to pry. Seriously, glad you're ok.

I feel okay. Still a bit swollen in the wrist but that'll just take time. I have a large hematoma on my left forearm that's still bulgy but it's going down. Therapy is going good and I've regained a large portion of mobility back already. So they say it can stay in forever if I wanted, but the mass of it will reduce some mobility. With recovery only being a couple days for removing and no PT afterwards, I'm going to let the bones fuse fully and get as much mobility back as possible, then have them cut it out. The severity of damage needed extra long bolts and I can actually feel them on the backside protruding so that's kind of wild...but yeah I'll get 'em removed and continue my at home exercises and I'll be back to nearly 100% by the end of the year. Just a bit sore after jobs for the detailing side of things and for my regular job I'm in an "admin" role I guess you can say so I'm a desk jockey with a gun...worst I have to worry about it carpel tunnel.

I was ejected out of a cruiser at work back in 2016....this little wrist thing is nothing lol. I've got 9 lives, can't kill me yet.

Holy shit man. Is that why you've got Kat in the username?

Sounds like you're well on your way to recovery, and that's good news. Let us know how it goes and when you're back on 2 wheels.

Yesterday I rode with a few members of the moto gang up and around Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts. Lots of dirt roads and back roads. Outdoor dinner at a Mexican place in Stephentown, NY, then another 30 miles south down to Hillsdale to refill on gas.

    And eat ice cream.

Here's one of mine. I've since added a solo pod to the rear saddle, as the wife rides with me on our touring bike. Been a hot riding season this year. Ride safe y'all.779163da-8bb0-4de4-9c75-032a86d42e58-jpeg.153705.jpg

Third year in a row bike has sat with less than 100 miles in the season. I’m up to 7 miles this year and that’ll probably be it. Too busy and too many distracted drivers on the road to motivate me.

When I purchased our bikes we planned on (and still do) stick to the roads less traveled. There are far too many distracted drivers, and it makes me nervous doing highway travel. We haven't ridden much this season either, as day time temps have been upper 90's to low 100's. By the time we put all of our gear on, the last thing we want to do is ride in the heat.

Seven hours of driving to see the ‘mint condition, never dropped, undamaged’ Sled after a deposit and strategically placed extra pics I asked for hiding the issues.
It was fucking destroyed. Dropped on both sides, torn seat, driven on the beach judging by the sand and oxidizing all up in it, rust on every exposed piece of steel, no front brake/pitch black fluid, shredded rear rim, leaking oil and RTV globbed against the crush washer, the list goes on.. I get that its an offroad-y bike but this thing was straight up neglected/abused.
The owner of the shop blamed the prior owner about the RTV which I then pointed at the sales guy and said ‘you told me it was fully serviced yesterday so which is it?’ “Uhhhh the techs mightve left it in there but im not sure”. Okay bud.
Sloppy sales tactics, juvenile gas-lighting, and sad excuses. Rookies.
Test rode it since I havent been able to even find one in person and either hunting for a not-destroyed 2020 or waiting for the ‘23 announcements.

Gotta love dirt bags. It's stuff like this that makes me the petty jerk that'll take pics of it all and crucify them online. Places with those tactics need to go out of business. They were banking on the average consumer kicking themselves for the trip and not wanting to leave empty handed.

So, aside from being beat to shit, did it solidify that it's the bike you want? How'd it ride? I imagine riding the abused version gave you insights to how good/bad the bike is in general.

Well I aced my classroom test last evening (lasted from 3-9pm).

Tomorrow and Sunday from 9am-230pm on the range with the instructor. Seems like a really good instructor (been riding for 50+ years) and 6 people in the class. Two are in it because they bought vespas and didn’t know they needed motorcycle lessons to ride them. Going to be 90 degrees but I am anxious to get it completed. Wish me luck!!!!!

Nice! Have fun with it! The class was very educational, but being on the bike was always fun, even in a test setting.
