Fun fact: Tom Clancy was given a ride on the USS Hammerhead while developing the film adaptation for The Hunt For Red October (one of my favorite movies ever)

This is a true statement. I was COMSUBRON SIX Staff when he went on the cruise on the HAMMERHEAD. Big media hoopla and photo op that turned into a crap storm on getting them cleared for release at the COMSUBLANT level.

Later in my career I was at COMSUBGRU NINE in Bremerton, WA when the movie Crimson Tide was researched and filmed. Our Chief of Staff at COMSUBGRU NINE was CAPT Beard. He retired from the Navy and was the military advisor for the movie. If you watch the credits to the end he is given a very nice credit. He did do a good job as the uniforms were spot on accurate as was most of the interior communications.

I was once stopped by a gunboat on Long Island Sound while a sub came into the New London base

I only went to sub school in New London, otherwise never been there. I guess that could be a thing if the waterway is narrow enough.

On a side note... I really like your avatar! Well done!

Thames river is fairly narrow. Common to get stopped if ones coming in. It's a really awesome sight to see. I was an air force brat so I can admire the tin cans.

I can imagine it being a shitstorm with all the cameras and classified stuff mixing.

I love Crimson Tide too. Come to think of it, I love most submarine movies. :D

I like submarine movies pretty well. I have to hold my tongue and keep from critiquing every detail that is inaccurate because it really passes my wife off when I do that. It is much easier now that I'm approaching 30 years since being on one. Now I just enjoy the movie for what it is.

My uncle does that if there is any helicopter in the movie, he was a crew chief in Vietnam.

I feel the same with fighter combat movies.

on a side note, the local base is on the short list to get F-35s, so I’m hoping they will be moving in soon.

I think that's a tradesman thing. My bro is a plumber. Any exposed plumbing work is eyeballed and mercilessly judged. I do the same with welds.

Hahah in my opinion, the ducts were way oversized and the registers weren’t horizontal

They were level, but they were on the upward slope of the spiral round duct(I did appreciate that) so they were pointing up towards the corner of the opposite wall. Govt work, what can you say……

Gotcha. Well, as a gov't worker I can assure you that the fact the were installed at all is a bloody miracle. Odds are they went 127% over budget though.

I am a retired mailman and now a low level Gubment worker, kinda like a administrative assistant (glorified secretary). So, I guess I get pissed off when I see a car parked in front of a mailbox or the copier left out of paper.

Not really, just trying to fit in with the current flow of the thread.

I worked new construction on every Newport News boat built starting with OK city. I moved to fleet support when 773 was launched.
I know I worked an availability on Hammerhead some time in the 90s. The 637s that stand out for me are Flying Fish, it was cursed. Replaced the drain pump controller and the first one released the smoke. Next one worked and a squall came up and dumped a bunch of Elizabeth River water on it. The 3rd one smoked. The 4th one was good.
Then they got boarded by Greenpeace. The only time I've heard prepare to repel boarders on the 1mc.
The other was Mendel Rivers after a Pyro went off in the forward signal ejector. I still have a piece of it on my desk.
