Is this 2000 to 2004 swap doable?

Hello from West Virginia. I'm looking for input on a swap I'm considering. I have a 2000 4WD with a broken frame. Too far gone to repair. I have a 2004 2WD that I'm considering swapping to 4WD. I have everything from the 2000 to switch over to the 2004. Is this doable? Sure could use some input from someone who has done this before. Thanks

 

You didn't include the most important detail: What is the original and donor cab type? Access cab and Regular cab use same length frame IIRC, and Double cab is some other crazy beast.

Input from someone that's done it before? We've had a couple of people do similar, but not exactly the same. You'd need to check if the frame mounts match, and measure to the same location. With them both being 2UZ-FE V8, the motor mounts etc. should be semi-similar. But there was a few things that changed at the hop from 2002-2003.

 

The donor is an access cab and the receiver is a double cab.

 

I'm fairly certain double cab won't fit on an access cab or regular cab frame. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the gist of what I recall reading on here.

You'd also need to keep the ECU paired with the engine and harnesses together.

 

I would think the driveshaft lengths would be different between the two since the double cab is longer.

You'd be mixing/matching the drivetrain. I'm not sure if that's possible.

 

DC bed is 2" shorter, but overall length is longer by about 8", I think?. Funny enough, I can't even fit a DC in my garage. It's ~4" too long.

 

I'm thinking about putting the engine,transmission,front and rear diffs out of the 2000 into the 04. The only thing wrong with the 2000 is the frame broke and the 04 has had a new frame just isn't 4WD.

Oh - but that said, drivetrain swap should be in the ballpark if do-able. But you'd need to run to a driveshaft shop to get that taken care of, carrier bearing installed, etc. I'm assuming one or two or all three driveshafts will need to be shortened to work in the AC chassis. You'd need to swap over the ECU also.

Are you just trying to swap the 4wd parts over? Definitely doable, but won't be 100%.

Front driveshaft should come over fine from the AC to the DC, but the rear driveshaft will need to be addressed as neither will work. And depending on what month of '04 the DC was MFGd, some of the front-end components might be slightly different if its got the later/larger lower ball joints (if it has the larger LBJs, that means the knuckles are different, the LBJs, the lower arms, and the outer TREs are all different) but if you're bringing it all over form the AC to the DC, then NBD--just bring what you need over from the donor.

 

Actually, to that point, rear axle or at least gearbox should come over, I'm doubting the rear 2WD gearing would be the same as the 4WD front and you'd need parity there. Are the axles wider in the DC trucks, or is that just a Sequoia/T4R disc rear axle thing?

 

Not sure about the axle widths. I'll have to measure them. As for the warranty claim, the frame was painted with the CRC in 2012. Apparently it didn't work. I was told that Toyota no longer will replace the frames. I have a friend that works at a Toyota dealership and she is checking to see if Toyota will replace it. Not holding my breath. The 00 transmission is weaker than a 04. Other than that… doable. You’ll have to use the 04 electronics for it to be “legal”

 

Double cab axles are a little bit wider. Since the double cab is a 2004 it might 4.10 gears, so verify that. The gears in front diff of the 2000 might not work with the gears in the rear diff of the 2004.

 

Once it's been CRC sprayed it's done. Recall closed. Stupid but the way it works.
