Covid Fueled Price Bump - Bring-A-Trailer, Cars & Bids, etc

I introduced myself over in the other part of the site https://www.tundras.com/threads/new-member-cincinnati-05-ac-62k-miles.111611/#post-2884080 , but in essence I'm new to the Tundra realm and am curious if FGT are experiencing the same Covid bump that other vehicles are.

Among the Miata community clean, low mileage first gen cars are seeing a 50-100% price jump to pre covid pricing. This has softened a bit this year but prices are still strong compared to 2019, early 2020. Same can be said for 70's and 80s Japanese motorcycles.

BAT seems to be the place to sell (no deals to be had) and before I bought my 62k mile example I checked the sold BAT listings and prices were up there. I assume FGT, especially low mileage rust free examples have always carried a premium but how much are prices up compared to 2019/early 2020?

Everything has been high - in short a rising tide raises all boats.

Its simple - potential buyer goes out looking at new - sees 10k “market adjustment” on top of an already stupid high sticker and says “75k for a new half ton is crazy” decides a nice older square body is the better buy and affordable. Next thing you know - those 10k square bodies are now 25k square bodies.

SUVs are worse - Broncos, International Scouts and FJ Cruisers all selling for big bucks in top condition and even in less than stellar condition to buyers looking for a project. COVID brought out interest in at home projects clearly and high new prices might help keep checking bterest high. Ultimately though - taste will change and markets will settle.

20 years ago - I remember talking with a guy at work task with disposal of all wrecked motorcycles. Couldn’t believe the bids we were pulling on wrecked bikes - fueled by the whole custom chopper craze of the day. It settled down eventually and decent deals eventually returned.

Rare and desirable in concours condition will always be expensive. Desirable in good condition will always sell fast. Just like anything - take real estate - mortgage rates can double - ocean front homes will always be in demand - it’s just how many millions will you have to pay?

If you wanna buy mine, I'll sell it for $35k. <80k miles, southern-only frame so no rot, fully loaded, leather, limited, and all OEM+ mods at this point.

The one on BAT today went for $25,200 w/ BAT premium.

 

Mine's way nicer than that, newer, and better optioned, plus fully maintained.

 

Not related to 1st gen Tundras but related to Toyota price bumps… I’ve had several people knock on my front door asking to buy my 1997 Land Cruiser… it only has 180K miles but it’s a rust bucket… the highest offer so far is $20k

Keep in mind I bought it around 2003 with 110k miles for $12k

 

The one on BAT looked like a short term owner, possible flip. Lot of $$$ for a non 05/06.

My wife thought I was nuts when I told her I was going to look at a 2005 Toyota Tundra for $15.9k I'll have to show her the BAT results now. Although I'd probably get a stepside tumor deduct if I auctioned it.!!!

 

It's tough to get a J80 and J100 around here in salt-free-land for under $25k. I've seen a couple in the 18k-22k range here in great shape, but they're getting snatched up by out-of-town buyers in a lot of cases.

The photo of the underside looks like it has zero miles.

 

I wonder who these people are that bought trucks 15-20 years ago and then just rarely drove them. It's not like it was a collectible or rare sports car. It's just bizarre to me.

 

People that bought them to keep at a second/vacation home or older folks that are retired and don't do much but just wanted to buy a new vehicle since they had money sitting around? Those are what I usually assume is the reason but that's about all I got.
