Auburn Select-A-Lock Differential

Anyone have experience with the Auburn limited slip differentials? Looking to install one and wanted to know how it interfaces with ATRAC.

ATRAC detects spin and applies brake to spinning wheel. Limited slip utilizes clutch to apply more force to wheel without spin.

Wondering if the ATRAC system will fight against the limited slip.

 

It won’t be an issue, if anything the LSD and Auto LSD would help each other out slightly. I had an Auburn Pro LSD in a prior tundra and it was fine but the clutch style diffs like they are do wear out over time. The Select-A-loc as you mentioned is actually an electric locker from what I can tell, although they do offer the regular LSD too. The go to right now for LSDs is the Powertrax GripPro since it’s a helical gear type and they don’t wear out like the clutch style units.

 

This Select A Lock is attractive because of the e-lock function combined with LSD.

Is Auburn the only one that does e-lock and LSD at the same time?

 

They are 2 different products. The Grip-N-Lock is their clutch style LSD that is always in play. The Select-A-Lock is a selectable locker that’s either an open diff or fully locked, nothing in-between.

It is both a limited slip and e-locker.

 

I can see where there could be some confusion. I don’t know what to believe, but this is how it is described copied from auburns website:


Select-A-Loc® is a selectable traction device featuring an ON/OFF switch mounted near the driver. When OFF, the clutch pack, located behind the side gear, puts the differential into fully open mode.

Electronic Full Lock Activation

The driver can easily activate Select-A-Loc’s locker mode by turning on the switch mounted inside the vehicle cab. This Select-A-Loc® design locks the axle shafts to the differential housing and thus transfers torque directly from the differential case, NOT through the gears for less risk of wear and tear to the gears.

With electronic activation you never have to worry about airlines or a compressor; you’ll never lose pressure so your locker will always activate and deactivate when needed. This also eliminates the cost of installing an air tank and air-lines. Without the tank you also have more room in your vehicle for other important off road necessities.

 

This description sounds like a magnet with on/off to put pressure on the clutch plates. A traditional limited slip uses a spring. So either locked or open for this unit.

 

This states it works as an LSD when the switch us off and a locker when it’s on.

“Auburn Gear Select-A-Loc differentials maximize your vehicle's traction with on-the-go system engage. These electronically controlled traction-enhancing differentials are selectable lockers offering the traction control of a limited-slip differential and a full-locking differential--all in one! When locker switch is off, the clutch pack activates the limited-slip mode. As torque increases, the separating forces within the differential gears increase, causing the clutch pack to be compressed, in turn providing bias torque to the highest traction wheel. When the locker switch is turned on, electronic current is sent to the electromagnetic coil which locks the axles together.”

 

Apparently there is 2 different Select-A-Loc options. One is an LSD and one is an Open. Doesn’t matter either way though since they don’t make one for the Toyota 10.5” rear, only the Grip-N-Loc LSD for the 10.5”. They make the OPEN version only for the front 9.5” differential according to this application guide.

I was excited there for a minute. I’m supposed to get my Powertrax LSD in the mail tomorrow and was wondering if I needed to return it to get one of these bad boys!
