I have a 2001 tundra 3.4 v6, starter is going bad. Does anyone know the best way to take it out? I’ve replaced starters on my other vehicles ,but this one seems impossible to get out. Maybe someone has a video? Thanks

If there's nothing on YouTube, there's a factory service manual here at the site you can reference.

But I'll ask, since the starters seem to fail so infrequently on these trucks: What makes you think it's the starter that's failing?

Everything was fine until about three weeks ago. Then every now and then I would go to turn the key and nothing would happen. Sometimes I could hear the starter click but it wouldn’t turn the engine over. Then the next thing I know it’s cranking it fine. Took it to AutoZone and there machine they hooked to the battery said the first time the starter was fine the second time the starter was bad. Not really sure how much to trust that considering the fact that both times it told me the alternator was bad, which I replaced about a month ago, but it’s charging the battery fine. I’m really only assuming that the starter is bad. Although it cranked up all day yesterday without a problem. I start a job next week 30 miles out of town, and I really hate to get out there and all of a sudden I’m stuck because my truck won’t crank. The battery post aren’t corroded, but may be able to pull the cables off and just clean them just to be sure.

The field service manual can be found in my signature. If you're on mobile, you'll have to turn your phone sideways to see it.

I can never get field right. If I ever needed to create a new account, I'd never be able to hide. You'd know it was me the minute I called it a factory service manual again.

Oh, and it could very well be corrosion inside the battery cables.

It could also be rodents, if they happen to live in your area. Not sure about the V6es in these trucks, but the V8 has a void under the intake where they love to nest, and chew up wires.

Stories like this, makes me miss my 1965 f-100 even more. It took about 45 minutes to replace a starter on that, including the trip to the auto parts store. I didn't even need to lift it off the ground. Had I only known, I would still have it, and several Suzuki street going 2 smokes. Like this 1976 gt-750, AKA the "water buffalo".

Thanks for the replies. I found the easiest way to get to it was to pay the shop $280 That’s for the starter and installed. That’s worth the aggravation for me.
