Hi there. New to the forum and like the info. Was having problems with not shifting to 5 or 6 speed and traction light came on and then truck went into safe mode. Damn scary experience when going 60. Dealer replaced output speed sensor - they road tested for 20 miles or so. Apparently they saw po722 and po717 but just replaced the output sensor. Back on road again and same thing happened. Was closer to another dealer and they replaced input sensor as saw code po717. My question is this - what is the likelihood that both sensors would fail at the same time? And what would cause that?

14 year old truck, no idea on your mileage and they are probably the original sensors, not a stretch they were at end of life. The wheel speed sensors are subjected to road grime, vibration, etc. Parts fail eventually.

Did this fix the problem? Have the codes come back?

You are referring to the two speed sensors in the transmission. One at front, one at rear. They monitor transmission shaft speed to allow the ECM to shift ect.

Not common for both to fail at once but not impossible either. Maybe only one failed yet it was confused and threw both codes. Maybe your transmission fluid has some debris in it and both were dirty/getting interference. They work on a coil that counts metal teeth as they pass by, any metal flakes in the way will cause it to get bad readings.

Drive it, see if the codes come back. Hopefully you just had a bad sensor and the new ones fix it for good.
