    Hey guys,
Has anybody here what a camper shell with a removable front window so that they could use the roll down window in there Crewmax cab? I'm not even sure that it's possible to get this to work? I can't be the only one that's thought of this? It seems to be a waste of the roll down window if you put a camper shell on there and can no longer utilize it. I'm just wondering if you can seal the cap against the cab back and have it sealed against the weather?

    Thanks for any help.

    Dave

I haven't seen anyone on this forum with that. But I imagine if you did, you would need a cover that will flex with the vehicle in order to maintain the seal. Like one of those accordion covers they use on jet walkways when you're getting on a plane.

I have a crewmax with a cap/shell. The shell has a sliding window that flips down for cleaning. I've heard the seal or grommet between the cab and cap is prone to leaking and not recommended. I think you can also get a removable cap window if you need to crawl between truck cab and truck bed for camping.

Even with the cap, the roll down window helps remove heat from a closed truck cab.

One of my buddies has the ARE cap and the front window folds down into the bed of the truck. Think he paid $2600 for it. Really nice setup.

I have a buddy that has a seal between his shell and cab. He has had it for a long time. I leaks a little and has torn up the paint on his cab.

There are called 'boots' (exactly what you are trying to do).
    compression_front_boot.jpg

I would suppose that sliding window will make it more convenient to get in and out of the cap from the cab. Dog owners who keep them in the cap love this. They say that with rear window open all the way, the air conditioner from the cab cools down the cap.

Me? I was not willing to sacrifice the rear sliding window so I got myself a tonneau cover.

I was trying to remember "boot". My dad had one on his 63 Chevy truck. As a kid is was able to go back and forth from the cab to the camper. No doubt drove him nuts. The boot worked quite well. Lots of flexibility.

Buy a bed extender. Either way the tailgate goes down for 8 foot material.

I have a SnugTop. The dealer closest to me sells SnugTop and Leer. I liked the look of the SnugTop more than the leer.

I just bought a 2017 yesterday for the purpose of buying an ARE shell with a boot so I could throw the dogs in the bed of the truck but still give them AC. They don't travel well in the cab but AC is a must here in AZ in the summer.
The guy at the local ARE dealer just broke the news to me that due to the size of the back window, part of the boot touches the window. When the window is rolled down, it grabs the boot on the way down which, after a while, causes the leaks.
My thought would be to install a half boot underneath the window to keep heat from the road from coming up through the windows and then to mount a basket on top of the truck or the shell that extends out over the gap where I could put as Mat under the rack/basket to keep most of the rain out (during those precious few months of monsoon rain). It's not a perfect plan but perhaps somebody else can build on it or gas a better idea?

I was wishing for the same thing. But I don't think it's possible without a crazy amount of time and money. The back window on DC's leans forward, where the CM is nearly plumb.

Some companies make a "boot" that surrounds and flexes like an accordion

I had one on my Tacoma

I went on their site and I could only find them for 2017 DC's so far. I'll probably have to check back in a few months...

    Backseat them or...

The topper dealer tells you the window tears up the boot and after a while causes a leak from rolling the window up and down. Leave the truck window down and open and close the topper window to separate the truck from the topper. If the truck window is always down, the failure rate should be zero. Or just replace the boot when it starts to leak. Call it a wear item.

    Flux capacitor!
To bad one of the camper companies doesn't make a fiberglass insert to install between the camper and the truck with a rubber seal on both sides. If they just had a botched rain channel on the top to allow water to collect and drain to the sides it would fix this problem. They could even make a magnetic attachment behind the seals to the truck portion. Just thinking out loud for a new design.

They were in the back seat with the kid but two out of three end up puking four out of five trips. They have to come with but all of the clean up is getting out of control.
I thought about leaving the back window down with the ARE tilt/sliding front window down all the time but the cab would just bake.
Going to have to keep looking.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
Had I not received a 'good deal' on the CM, it would have definitely been a DC. It sucks not being able to close the tailgate when I load my 4wheeler in the back.

I live in New Orleans and know all about baking. I also know about puking dogs. Leave the back window down and close the slider on the cap. If someone just sold a small removable rooftop 12 volt AC for camper shells.

They sell something called a Noggle or something weird like that. It hooks up to an existing AC vent you run a hose to where you want the AC. It's generally made for vehicles without AC in the back seat.
I'm wondering how difficult it would be to port one or two of those through the cab into the bed...

I've had the same thought about ducting, even just for the back seat during the summer. Since my dogs are the only back seat passengers I have done a bunch of looking around particularly within the Police K9 equipment and found this:
    http://www.elitek9.com/COOL-K9/productinfo/VA01/
The issue I see for you is getting out of the truck with the duct. Into the camper shell or truck bed would be much easier to cut a hole. I suppose you could red neck something out the truck window and into the camper window but it would require inserts to take up the unused space.

What makes you think dogs need conditioned air? As long as your moving & they have a breeze and water they will be fine.
