8 - 712cc cylinders compared to 6 - 500cc cylinders also. Similar ratio as far as combustion chambers / qts ratio.

I still do oil change 10,000 miles for the Tundra because it is still under warranty. For my other vehicles (2014 Sienna, 2007 RX400H), I do every 17,500 miles. I am using Mobil 1 extended or ultimate synthetic. There was time I did oil change at 22,000 miles. For the record, I do not have a single engine problem with all of my vehicles. I think change out oil every 3K, 5K, 10K, 15K will be fine too but I rather spend that money and time to drink a few beers. I don't think a mechanic has more knowledge about oil than Toyota engineers. Cheer!

Well that settles it then, if Toyota isn’t willing to take the chance that means the risk/financial calculus didn’t support it. Which means there is risk, how much don’t know but that proves there is risk between a 5k and 10k.

Believe the lifetime powertrain is offered by the dealer and not from Toyota. The dealer specified 5k mile oil changes, they obviously would like for me to have them done in their service department, but I purchased the vehicle 280 miles from my house, so that isn’t an option. They allow for self maintenance as long as it’s well documented. I’m pretty sure I’ll never need to utilize this powertrain warranty, but it feels nice, like a box that says “guaranteed” on it. Makes you feel nice.

I bought my tundra back in 2010 from dealer that included lifetime powertrain warranty. Shortly thereafter, dealer ceased to exist and became another dealer. I still have their hats!

    Screenshot_20220810-220221_Gallery.jpg

Can I take it back to that other dealer if problems arise at 200k miles?

It depends on the purchase agreement when the dealership acquired them. It doesn't hurt to ask.

I crawl under my truck at each gas station refuel and change it right then and there.

5000 mile oil is way dirtier and less protective than changing at 500 miles - FACT.

    It’s just money!

I love the banter in these threads.

I highly suspect that the types of miles you drive affect the oil very differently.

5k miles at 85mph in the mountain west is a crap load more engine load than 50mph flat country roads, which is also different than urban stoplight accel stop, accel stop.

i change at 5k because I don’t know what the 10k figure is for. 95% of my miles is short trip city. Lots of acceleration

I’d take it step further…a maintenance interval should be able to be called as needed, based on analysis by the ECU. Modern sensors ‘should’ be able to provide enough data regarding measured operating conditions to make that possible. Is that still too cost prohibitive?

When I first saw vehicles with oil change reminders, I actually thought that was how they worked. It would make more sense than mileage alone, though mileage could be included in the algorithm.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    circling back around....

    (kirkland 0w-20)

    I test @ 5k about once a year.

the test tells me I'm cool to go at least 10k miles.

    but I don't.

I change @ 5k because the oil has STARTED to deteriorate past my self-imposed (and probably inaccurate) threshold.

and my life continues to be happy.

let's address a hypocrisy - but we don't fuss over our trans oil. we'll let that stuff go 100k miles.

To be fair, transmission fluid is not subject to byproducts of combustion.

    true.

but the other variable that it is subject to are far more invasive. clutch plate wear, high heat, etc.

    different, yes.

and yet we don't fuss over it.

and transmissions fail far more in relation to the lubrication liquid than any engine does in relation to oil related failure.

There’s so much data and so many sensors that the only reason I can imagine this isn’t happening is because either they’re afraid of confusing/annoying consumers or taking revenue from their service departments.

You guys will clearly know more than me here, but I imagine it’s totally possible for the ECU to log things like temp, load, idling, starts, etc. that would all play a factor in how healthy one’s oil is.

But I can imagine consumers might not like having an oil change light come on sooner than expected (“My buddy’s Dodge doesn’t need a change for x miles!”), service centers seeing customers coming in for >10k intervals, etc.

So the easier move is just to continue the normal oil change system that people are already familiar and comfortable with, as imperfect as it is.

I'm in a rail yard with nasty ass ground up train dust everywhere.

It takes me more than 30 years to learn how often to change out motor oil. I used to change out oil every 2K, then 3K, then 5K with synthetic, then 7.5K, then 10K, then 15K, then 17.5K, and currently 20K. Sometimes I can't do at 20K so it is over 20K for another 1 or 2K. I only do 10K if it is required for warranty purpose.
