Yeah, I don't like company lunch crap. If I'm required to attend I'm getting paid for it. If they don't like that, then I attend, and take my lunch break after. The whole point of a break is that I don't have to be onsite and I don't have to worry about work for a minute.

The Tundra stock head unit. I have had several issues with mine including lockups and reboots while driving down the highway, pixelating display, etc. I took it in for Toyota's update which was supposed to fix these issues. I was informed that the head unit SOFTWARE is only covered for 36 month/36k miles, whichever comes first. I have just over 40k miles. So Toyota wants to charge me $75 to fix their buggy code on their notoriously crappy head unit! I am an audiophile at home but the stock sound is just fine when I am driving, so I never was concerned about replacing my head unit. Now I don't see much choice if I want a head unit that works as reliably as the rest of the truck.

I went by a very well-known and popular car audio shop in Mobile and was shown an Alpine model that will pretty much replace the head unit, but there may be no way to get wireless Apple Carplay. I don't know what other functionality I would lose. I have PM'd @james@tech12volts but have not heard back from him yet. This is money that I absolutely should not have to be spending!

Bummer, man. I've not had any issues on mine, but I also have one of the pre Android Auto/Carplay units that they started in 2020. Would you consider putting in an older unit and losing those features if it would be reliable? I know there used to be quite a few for sale in the marketplace, but IDK how plug and play they are.

That sucks. No issues with mine yet ( :fingerscrossed: ) but my truck has a third as many miles as yours.

Same, and being half death I don't bother with music anymore so if the sound quality sucks it's lost on me. I just do audio books lately. I use the plug in Android Auto thing and it works fine. I've had it lock up from time to time but nothing destressing.

I passed up a nice 2019 for my 2020 specifically for the Apple Carplay, and I added the module to make it wireless. I literally use it every time I am in the truck. The map service that the Tundra uses is AT LEAST two years behind even one day after you have updated (again at YOUR cost) to the "latest" maps. I use Waze over my wireless Apple Carplay and get up to date maps with traffic reports. I have grown far too used to that to give it up.

Totally understandable. If you are used to it and using it there are lots of aftermarket HUs that will work well.

I actually passed up the 2020 with the push button and smart handles because I despise Android Auto and don't want it in my daily driver.

It's very intrusive and constantly popped up in the vehicle I had that was equipped. My phone would constantly do alerts asking me to connect, the HU in the vehicle would divert to a prompt to ask me to connect constantly if I plugged my phone into the USB to charge. It was a freaking nightmare. Had to go buy a cigarette outlet USB port so I could charge my phone because I couldn't use the vehicle's USB.

I've not had any issues with the Tundra yet, but our 4R occasionally will flip out, lock up, and reboot. Usually every few hours on a lomg road trip.

As handy as Nav can be, I do miss the days where software didn't rule the world and things just worked when you pressed the "on" button - and they worked the same every time - barring catastrophic mechanical failure, which rarely happened.

I've literally never had any of that with my Tundra and I do charge my phone with the USB port from time to time.

But do you have Android Auto installed on your phone? I didn't have it on my phone and it would constantly nag (about 3 minutes between dings) for me to install it.

Looks like I do have it. Probably because I have a Pixel, as I didn't install it and it doesn't look like I can delete it.

I bought a truck with navigation so I don't have to give google my location. I barely use any of the radio features besides phone calls, economy, and sirius when they are doing a free preview weekend. I'm busy driving. :p

You can buy me an iPhone. I wouldn't turn it down. Those things sell easy, and I need a helmet for my SxS and future motorcycle. :p

Yeah, I didn't want to use it and it wouldn't leave me alone.

When you are trying to buy something on CL and the seller stops replying. Cash in hand ready to buy an ATV that doesn't run and the seller has dropped off the face of the earth apparently.

Just give me the cash. You can keep the iphone. My work truck as CarPlay which is paired with my work iphone. They're discombobulated, unintuitive, buggy, unreliable mess. AndroidAuto has worked for me 95%+ of the time. CarPlay is currently batting 95%+ failure rate...

I miss the days when you pushed a button and electronic devices actually worked with no fuss. You power up, and the next button executed exactly the function you wanted. And if it didn't, there was a verifiable physical component failure as the culprit.

These days God forbid you don't sign your life away and subscribe (monthly payments, of course) on every platform, every separate app, every website, etc. in an effort for information to be shared and passed seamlessly. Except that doesn't work either because X platform doesn't support Y functionality and vice versa.

    GAAAH!!! :annoyed::frusty:

Trying to get a GPX file from a website (MapMyRun) to load into Garmin Connect. Doesn't want to play with android - the app won't give me an upload option in the route creation section, it has to be done from the website. Fine, I log into website, but since I'm on a "smart" phone it keeps opening the app and forcing me to go there. It won't let me exclusively use the website because it sees the app on my phone. Would be fine if the app had ALL of the accessibility and options of the website, but it obviously doesn't (like most android apps). :frusty:

Interestingly, I can almost get it on the Chromebook, but not quite. Something wrong with the file saved as GPX on that platform - it fails on upload in the Garmin website.

3rd try, pulled out the dinosaur Dell with windows, and I can't figure out why it only wants to download as an html file. Absolutely refuses to allow me to change file extension. Garmin won't accept the html file type. That didn't surprise me.

MapMyRun keeps trying to force me into signing up for an account on their site or signing on with Facebook. WTF does FB have to do with anything? We've paid for the @*#! run, just give me the GPX map file to upload!!

To note: the organization/website we signed up for the run with redirects to the MapMyRun site for the maps. It's not a MapMyRun event, so to speak.

It's entirely possible I could get what I need by creating an account on MapMyRun, but it's a stand on principle now! They're trying to manipulate me into doing just that. Well... I very much resent that!

I can see the route online and recreate it myself. Just would be easier to upload the file and use these electronic gadgets we've sold our souls for. Dammit, I'm GenX, and unlike these darned kids who sign up for anything and everything all willy-nilly, I know how to read and use a map. I'll draw that shit on paper with a pen and a highlighter if I have to.

    I love this.

I don't have FB, and I don't link my accounts for one off product/service uses. Hell, the only reason I have an email is because I have to have one to file taxes or play my video games online. And this site requires one, too, so I guess I'll have one. Doesn't mean everybody and their dog needs to know it or send me crap.

As I suspected... wife caved and created a mapmyrun account and they gave her the GPX file. Bastards!

Anyway, now that I've calmed down, with the help of Satan himself (Google) I was able to figure out how to stop my phone from automatically opening apps from the web browser. Thus, I was also able to log into Garmin Connect via web browser on my phone and upload the GPX file she emailed me. From here it should be easy to transfer to the Garmin device when I get home.

If you don't see another "old man rant" this evening, you'll know it worked.

What a PITA. 80's technology was so much less aggravating! Well, except for when the motormouth DJ wouldn't shut up in time and ruined the beginning of the song you were trying to record for free off the radio broadcast.

DJ's make me angry and are the second reason I no longer listen to the radio. No, I don't want to hear your inane babble about whatever irrelevant shit happened to pop up on your faceplant news feed. Shut the hell up and play the tunes.

Ads are the first reason I don't listen to the radio and also a reason I don't have cable TV.

I watch most of my cable TV by recording it on the PVR and then skipping the ads. Mrs Punishment won't let me drop cable.

I would listen to less radio if my Tundra would let me plug in my iPod Classic and listen to it.

Ain't nobody got time to be skipping ads. Completely takes me out of the immersion of watching a show or movie too. I visit the buccaneer's anchorage or a similar bazaar of film and television collections and acquire them in ad free HD to be played at my leisure.
