TPMS Relearn Tool

Looking to find out what people are using for a relearn tool? I find it difficult to gather info online about it. Any suggestions on which tool works on Tundras or best way to relearn your sets of sensors? I swap wheels twice a year and have Toyota sensors in both sets but can't find relearn tools that work on Toyotas. Just looking to see what people are doing?

Read your manual. You may not need one. The 20/21 doesn't need a tool.

If you want a TPMS teaching tool the Autel Maxi TPMS pad will read and clone the sensors on my steel wheeled 21 SR5. Should I decided to purchase a second set of rims I will have the ability to swap back and forth with the Tundra being none the wiser. Now, I'm not so sure that's even necessary since my Tundra may just figure out what sensor ID is spinning on all four corners and go with that.

 

The 2013 will not program the sensors to the truck. Your reset is for resetting the light after a low tire indication. The 2020 and newer (and maybe a year or two before that) can read the sensors and program them to the ECU without requiring a scan tool.

 

Your truck will read the sensors without a tool. However, it is a royal pita and takes time. I just rotated tires and mine hasn't reprogrammed them yet.

 

It takes a few miles for mine to see the axle swap but it does figure it out.

 

Yeah I'm at about 150 miles so far.

 

I second the Autel suite of tools. I have a

Autel MaxiTPMS TS508WF that I used to clone the original TPMS sensors. I now have two sets of wheels/tires and can change them without having to relearn each time.

 

That ain't right, man and it sucks big time.

 

I was just looking at this on their site after you mentioned it. So after a tire rotation, this tool can read each sensor so that you can re-enter them to allow the pressures to read without having to do the bs drive cycle listed in the manual? I have to do a reset on both the truck and the wifes 4R. Both are 2020's. I have tried the button about a dozen times so far and driven 150 miles with no luck yet.

 

I know the Maxi Pad which requires a laptop can only read and write to the sensor. It does not communicate with the vehicle in any way.
I got involved in all this when my 2011 had a dead sensor. The Autel system couldn't read the dead one so it had to be removed and the serial number manually entered to burn the new eprom. I paid less than $200 for four sensors and the maxi pad. After fixing the Element I read and recorded the sensors for the 2017 Abarth and when we got the Tundra, read and recorded those too.

That's really odd that yours takes so long to see them. When I had my first tire rotation the sensors came alive before I left the dealership but hadn't noticed the tires were rotated. About 2 miles down the road and the swap occurred. Since my rears are 3 psi higher it was easy to see when that happened. Now I do have the steelies if that makes a difference.

 

I ordered an Autel MaxiTPMS TS508. Between the truck and the 4R, this will be alot easier than the irritation of trying to get the truck to swap them around on its own.

 

What TPMS sensors do you have? OEM? Keep us posted on this because I have a 21 that I want to swap wheels on.

I have OEM sensors. I took the wheels off of my 2013 and moved them to my 2020 after installing new OEM sensors in them. I had one hell of a time trying to get the truck to register them and then program them like it is supposed to. It took several months for them to start working. As soon as I rotated the tires on Sunday, the pressures went blank. I have tried the reset button followed by the drive cycles several times and they still aren't showing after 150 miles. Between the truck and the 4R, I'm over the manual BS procedure. I haven't even looked at the pressures on the 4R yet. I spoke to Autel and he said this will do the job. It arrives this weekend.

Yes you can load the TPMS ID's into your truck using the ODB cable. You can also purchase 4 of the programable Autel TPMS MX dual freq sensors and just clone your existing sensors on to a winter set of wheels/tires without having to relearn. Now you can swap summer and winter wheels without any hassle. You truck just thinks it is the same set.

 

Thanks for the reply. I ordered the 508 yesterday. I have the OEM sensors. The truck is just being a pain in the rear and not resetting the positions after the tire rotation so that the pressures register. Toyota could have written the manual a little differently because the drive cycle procedure hasn't worked for me. Since we have the 4R as well and just did a rotation on it, $300 for the Autel is worth it over the constant aggravation of trying to reset the system every time.

 

What is the trick to getting it to trigger the sensors? I can read the driver's front. The drivers rear is hit and miss and no go at all on the passenger side. All I did was a tire rotation and this is turning into a real pita.

 

Sounds like the batteries are dead or dying in the sensors. All I did was place the Autel reader close to the sidewall and I got ID, temps and pressures on the good ones and nothing on the dead one. That one required breaking down the tire, reading the sensor ID and typing it into the Autel for a clone.

 

The sensors are new. They were good until I rotated tires. I have tried with ign sw on and off.

 

The truck has not moved today. Do I need to do anything with the pressures or anything to "wake" the sensors up? I have both drivers side but nothing on the passenger side.

 

I just used the 508 to read the TPMS ID's by putting it against the tire next to the valve stem. My OEM's read right away. I then used those Id's to program into my truck using the OBD cable. Was quite easy.

Make sure you have selected the right make, model & year for your truck. (You probably have but just got to say it)

Also make sure your 508 has the latest updates. There is a procedure to do that in the manual.

It is odd that the tool is reading some but not all. Try changing the year to one year back of your vehicle in the tool. I know there were some older model TPMS sensors that were put in later model tires around the '20 and '21 models. If that does not work then you might have some bad sensors.

 

For the year I have #1 selected. I did update it before I used it. The sensors are OEM and less than 2 years old. Everything was good until I rotated tires last weekend and the pressures show dashes. I tried scanning them with the ignition switch on, and the tool right against the valve stem and even against the sidewall. I have both on the driver's side. Passenger side is being a pain. I'm at a loss.

 

I don't believe you have to do anything. My 124 sits for weeks on end and if memory serves me correctly I just put my Autel maxi pad up to the sidewall near the valve stem and in a few moments it read them just fine. On mine I had to go into the program and tell it what vehicle to look for but in your case since you can get one side and not the other you're doing it right.

 

I'm at a loss. The pressure is wrong as well.

 

Are the temps/psi correct on the DS?

 

No idea. The pressures were displaying on the instrument screen. Once I rotated the tires, the pressures went to dashes. I tried the reset button and drive cycle and they still haven't come up. That's the reason I bought the tool. The scanner said that the psi was 30.9. I put a pressure gauge on it and it said 39.0.

 

Hang on and I’ll report back this week on where i got the tool and 4 new sensors for less than $200
