First things first 140k Tundra TRD v8?

hello there everyone , i recently purchased a 2006 Tundra TRD off road . the truck looks to be in decent condition from what i can tell , which i dont know much. I was wondering what are some of the first things i should do as far as maintenance or upgrades? i know of a couple , but im unsure which to get at first, timing belt was done at 94k. Thanks in advance for your time.

 

Check the frame for rust. The frame should be dull black and not have any flaking. If it's shiny black, that's suspicious, some people coat them to hide rust. Especially check the X-shaped crossmember over the tire.

If the timing belt ever breaks on your truck, your engine is a toast. It's to be done every 9yr/90k miles per Toyota but 10yr/10k mile is OK, just make sure it hasn't been 10yrs+ since change. It's easy to pop off a timing chain cover (3-4 10mm bolts), left or right, and inspect the condition of the belt. Take a pic, share here if you want.

Check your brakes to see what condition they're in. Check your fluids. Transmission is sealed, so not easy to check. Toyota's new recommendation on sealed transmissions is a full flush every 70k now, IIRC.

Be careful with fluid in rear diff and front diff (if 4WD at least, you didn't specify), look at the back of the diff cover for "LSD" sticker, if there, be careful what you put into it.

If 2WD, you need to check the transmission crossmember mount bolts. Make sure they're all there, and all tight.
If 4WD, you need to lube all zerks on the drivetrain, with NLGI 2 grease, and note the slip yoke zerk will has special, requiring a special procedure. More info on request.

I think that's the big stuff.

Make sure it had the lower ball joint recall work done. You don’t want to lose a ball joint going 80 mph on the highway.

Recalls are typically always free. At least, I personally haven't had to pay for a single recall yet, to date.

That's just one of a couple of advantages of setting up an account @ Toyota Owners. Not only can you see the build sheet for your vehicle and dealership records, but it actually warns you of any open/unfulfilled recalls on your truck - airbags, lower ball joints, etc. - and you're also giving them contact information for that VIN in case other recalls come up later.

If you haven't paid for it yet you better look at it close. You have an 06 and some members here have been screwed over on these. One guy bought a "pristine" 37k mile truck and it was rotted to nothing. You need to get a look at that frame. Not worth the risk.

as far as the rust , it looks worse than other trucks ive seen you comment on in the forums here. this truck is from Utah , is it possible to rust that bad, there, in that time frame , to the point i should avoid going through with the sale ?

it drove great , i didnt take any pictures of it. the frame had a rusty color to it , but still looked solid and intact, no flakes or holes .

 

Looks like a solid truck, but I would definitely crawl underneath to do a definitive rust search. There have been many people here in the same boat as you with a great looking truck, only to find the frame was toast. Not trying to fear monger, but it happens. Good luck.

 

So , this isnt the truck, just an online image . it looked PRETTY much like this , but hardly any black , Almost all the rust color.

 

That timing belt wasn't done long ago mileage wise but shows being last done in 2011 so it's time for another one just from age so factor $800-$1000 at least for that unless you're doing yourself.

I'd be sceptical. Stop buy for a look and get a bunch of pics. Post here and we can help you out. For how much they are asking for it you could be out a hefty sum if you're wrong. Don't just get the outside of the frame rails get the inside of them and get a good one of the spare tire crossmember mounting points.

 

ill try to do that monday. at the very least ill ask for pictures from the dealer.

 

Unfortunately, that comparison doesn't really help as some surface rust is inevitable, and not really a deal breaker in most cases. If you really like this truck, have them send you better pics of the frame if possible. Keep us updated if you can.

Temporarily added VIN to my acct and have now deleted but noticed certain things....

* Feb 2015 Performed Frame inspec LSC with Op code 3628C1(Frame Inspected – No Significant Perforation Found)

Look, I'm gonna be direct: There is a veritable crapload of available, southwestern-only, rust-free trucks within 60-90 minutes of PHX. It's almost as loaded with quality, rust-free trucks as the Atlanta & surrounding area. Why in the hell are you looking at a truck in Utah?

This thing is rusty. If there's that level of rust already on just the side of the rail, you need to be seriously worried about two things:

1. What it's going to look like in the areas that tend to hold moisture and salt, if the vertical walls of the frame and weld seams are that rusted?!
2. You see that part on the framerail? Imagine trying to break free any bolt on there with all that rust mechanically bonding it. That's going to be every part you need to remove, are you up for that?

This would be a hard pass for me. Seriously. You've got so much in your area, what's stopping you from buying more-local? Price? Mileage? What's your concern here?

The fact the owner went in for a frame inspection in 2015 should tell OP all that's needed. Someone had concerns 7 years ago that the frame was potentially compromised. While it wasn't then, given the proof of active driving from 2015-2019, that's 4 more years the frame has had to rot.

I'd be shocked if this was a purely UT truck. Maybe it is, and it was used in snowy/icy areas where salt was utilized. I dunno. I'd hard-pass on this.

 

the truck is in AZ now , its just lived in Utah , guess the owner has property there, buys em , then ships them down here to his dealership? i dont know lol. But yea , I hear you, just thought id give them a shot as they have decent reviews and their stock looked clean . ill have to do a further search. i couldn't find much for my price range in my area. Thank you for the info, i had no idea about that stuff! i appreciate that, ill keep my eye open for something until i can verify the rust isn't as bad as i remember. as far as my budget : Something Sub-20k that can last me a few years if i take care of it[trading in my 2020 ford ranger as i cant afford the payments anymore]. was always pointed towards Toyota , and I don't care for tacomas.

I've seen some of the AZ folks post great finds from OfferUp, FB Marketplace, Craigslist. Maybe it's in the way you're searching?

Oh, and before I forget @BaneBlade323, what cab type are you looking for? 2WD or 4WD? Any must-have options?

With a few more details of "must have", "nice to have", given the resources here, I can't help but think we could help you hunt something down.

 

@shifty` needs to be 4Drs , 4x4 , and v8 to accommodate work and family. Those are my must haves on it. I can go a tad above my 20k mark if it's a fantastic deal. Don't really care about the cosmetics as long as it's mechanically sound.

 

Well, mileage typically isn't a factor with these. Low mileage can be, though, so can lots of short-trip driving.

When you say 4drs, could you live with an access cab truck? Rear doors are suicide, and baby seat is doable, but not quite as as easy as double cab.

Another way to phrase this could be: Are you looking for the cab space of a sedan/SUV with a bed, or are you just looking for something that'll hold 5, but anyone over 5ft tall won't be totally comfy after 20-30 miles?

 

I suppose I'm fine with the access cab if it's a REALLY great truck , but I'd really prefer the 4 doors. 1 woman, 1 kid, and a dog is what I'll be hauling lol.

Maybe the other Scottsdale/PHX and surrounding area folks can keep eyes out for a nice V8/4WD DC truck.
