About to buy a new 2015 Tundra Crewmax. I need advice

What accessories should I get from Toyota? and what should I go to a 3rd party?

I'm pretty much trying to get basic and save money overall by buying from other suppliers (which is something else I will be looking into), what I need to know: Is there is any accessories that are worth paying the Toyota price?

 

Whatever you do don't buy anything from the dealer. Even if they give it to you at cost I would still do a quick Google search to see of you can find it cheaper. Trdsparks.com have cheap prices just watch shipping. I recommend waiting until you have the truck for a while and then write a list of accesories/mods you want. Search this forum and Tacoma World has a subforum for tundras but be warned your wallet will hate you. Haha

 

Only thing I can think of that you would WANT to pay toyota prices for would be installation of supercharger so it is covered under warranty.

 

If you are into doing your own upgrades then why not start with a SR5 level and DIY? Whether it's suspension, sound system' lighting, exhaust, etc, you can easily beat mfr prices and have as good or better. I see very few drivetrain upgrades post purchase such as differentials. I installed three diff's on three new vehicles in the past. A lot of folks don't want to touch drive train over warranty fears. Never stopped me. Toyota makes a great truck. Whatever you do, I advise professional install when possible. I think you will have better overall satisfaction DIY if that's what your inclined to do. The SR "base" doesn't come with Crew Max, only single and DC cabs, but you can do the SR5 Crew Max and wheel and deal from there.

 

@matluth brings up a good point, there is two issues here. Cost of accessories and cost of labor. Don't pay full price for the parts but if you feel like you are in over your head or are unsure of what you are doing, like me haha, then get it done professionally.

 

I bought an SR5 because I knew I would be changing wheels, tires and suspension so it didn't make sense to buy a TRD. As far as buying OEM stuff, I rarely ever buy from the dealer. You can buy it all online for a lot less. Good luck with your purchase. These new Tundras are really nice.

 

Yea if you know you are going to change wheels, give it a lift, then why buy a trd. Good point, save your money right off the bat.

 

It's too bad the base tundra only comes with the 4.6L. If it had the 5.7L it would be a great project truck. Back in day you were able to custom order pretty much whatever you wanted with some limitation of course. Not any more.

 

Also you are on the right track with asking questions. There are a lot of VERY knowledgeable people on this forum and they will be able to answer your questions. Chances are if you are having a problem or have a question, someone on here has already experienced it and has figured out a solution or a means to an end. No need to go through the pain of beating your head against a wall. I learned so much from Tacoma World when I had my tacoma, and even if I never have a problem with my tundra , I will always be an active member here because (this is run by same people) I want to continue what was shown to me over there.

 

If you could bargain the items down when you purchase your truck, that may be the best way to go. I got the Toyota Step Boards at 1/2 price when I purchased the truck. I heard of guys getting the tow mirrors at fraction of MSRP. I wish I would've thought about getting the TRD exhaust when I bought the truck. After your truck leaves the lot, your leverage is gone. Toyota parts are expensive, but they are quality stuff. See if you could include a bunch of stuff in the deal.

 

That's good advice. Even after you barter, some left the dealer with a decent coupon for TRD acc. Maybe get the SR5 and barter for the all the goodies that the dealer can install. Thinking they may not barter for the Super C, but you never know until you ask.

 

The current Base Tundra is definitely a base "work" truck. Pretty sure about the column shifter too. If you are on a budget, want a new Tundra and don't mind the 4.6L then maybe a good project truck for someone. The day I got my new 76 Bronco, I got up on the hard top with a jig saw and cut out the hole for my sun/moon roof which at that time were pretty much aftermarket luxuries. After that I used the same jig saw to trim out my fenders to install my new state of the art "ABS" plastic fender flares. Still aftermarket luxuries 39 years later for some stupid reason. After that I installed Thorley's and took it for a test run and got pulled over by an Oregon state trooper about 5 minutes later. (302 V8 hauled ass and I didn't have the C Bombs connected ). Got a warning and lecture. I miss doing mods like that. You get a sense of pride when you DIY

I am getting the SR5 with the 5.7 engine. After checking the prices for accessories I realize that they are up to 3 times more expensive than aftermarket. With this in mind I am going to negotiate for the towing mirrors, bed spray, undercoat and/or side steppers. If no deal can be reached I will then take it as is. I truly appreciate your replies, I'll post pics off said truck once it's in my hands. I can't wait. Btw I am in BC Canada.

Sounds like a good plan. I like my tow mirrors, hate my plastic bed liner. Bed "spray" and undercoat is a good idea. I am losing my chrome steps for sliders eventually. You may want to get those if you can't get a good price from the dealer. I drove all the way up thru BC in 2011 to Yukon T. The Fraser River, Peace Valley Mt. are nuts. Could easily live there. My avatar is the Peace Mt range at sunset. Weird coincidence.

 

The SR5 is as close to base as i would go. I love the rear roll down windows... Also.. when i got my 2015, they had 700 extra for alarm, and 700 extra for the paint protective coating. I was being very frugal, and had those Items removed, and went with a 2 way alarm system and was less than the 700 bucks.

This situation sounds very familiar.

 

Tundra is going in on Monday for a Supercharger. Wife mainly drives the truck. Not gonna tell her....love to know what she is gonna say when she finally takes it for errands on Tuesday. Lol!!

 

How come that never happens to me? Start up my truck in morning, "Huh, sounds a little different this morning, the AIP's didn't shut off I guess"

 

good luck with the purchase, if it comes up I'd get the remote start aftermarket. Better range depending on what you get and you won't have issues with stopping the engine when you open the door.

 

Any personal recommendations?

 

Every time I go to my local dealer's parts/accessories dept they usually have something displayed on sale that's not advertised. The parts manager is pretty cool and sometimes can work out a deal and be sure to sign up on Toyota Owner's site to get special deals/discounts.

 

I have the Viper 5806v. Features I like are the 2-way remote so you'll get the alarm on your fob if you are in range. Range is killer, they advertise 2 miles line of sight on here and I believe it. I can start my truck from my office at work Remote start, works like you'd expect a remote start to work. Since your fob is 2-way you get tone letting you know the truck got your remote start signal.

If you end up going this route factor an add on device to work with the immobiliser so the remote start will work. All said and done you can get this all installed for a little less than the factory system with more features. win/win

 

I talked to the shop that tinted my windows yesterday since they're an official Viper dealer and got some info on the 5606v system. I think I may go this route and I'm considering one of the 2 way remotes. I was originally thinking about using the smart phone app as a remote but didn't realize how much more expensive this option is. Plus there's a monthly fee you have to pay just to use the app. I can always add this later which I think is a great feature of this system. I'm quite surprised at all of the additional add-ons you can get for this alarm system. Too bad I can't incorporate a Viper system with my current remote start. Oh well.
