Got my brand new 2017 5.7 crewmax and love it but after about 800 miles it stared to make a bad sound on cold start up that only last a few seconds. I dropped it off at Toyota on Thursday night so they would be able to check it out on cold start. Weren't able to find out what it was over the corse of Friday but heard the noise. I currently have a rental Camry from them. They were telling me when I talked to them this am that they may have to call toyota t get help from the TASK team. Just thought I would share in case anyone else has had something similar happen. Tried to attach video showing sound but isn't letting me upload.

I'll have to set up a you tube account to load it up. The best I can describe it now is a rattle/knock for a few seconds then goes away and everything sounds normal

Odd that it hasn't thrown any codes. Sounds like it would have.

Hoping the dealership can figure it out!

I had an issue similar to this in my 2012 Tundra. It had something to do with the engine thinking I was putting is E85 fuel. They flashed some new codes that finally fixed the issue. Mine only did it in cold weather. Toyota corporate was very good. They even sent their own tech from California to Georgia to help the dealer.

After about three attempts, they finally got the issue fixed and I didn't have another issue while I owned that truck. It had over 200,000 miles when I traded it in for a 2017.

Only on cold start up. If I turn it off then back on immediately after cold start up It doesn't do the noise again.

That's what I thought from looking around on here but the guys at the dealership seemed puzzled by it.

Did you have the flex fuel engine? That is good to hear that your issue was resolved and your tundra got a good 200k.

Yes, mine was a flex fuel truck. I never put a drop of E85 in it, but for some reason if the temperature got below 40 degrees, the engine would think it was starting with E85. Only happened on first start of the day and would go away. Toyota tried several different computer flashes and they would work for a couple weeks and then do it again. The last flash they did worked for the remaining life of my ownership. Toyota corporate was great to work with. Very helpful and performed everything fast. I noticed the last time they flashed it, the truck had a sound once you turned it off. Not a bad sound but one that sounded like the fuel pump was doing something. My new 2017 has the same sound of a pump running for a second after you shut off.

Mine is not the flex fuel but it does have that same sound at shutoff. Sounds like it comes from over by the glovebox area. Hopefully I will have as good of an expierience as you did with the fix.

Yours sounds different than mine. Mine sounded like you were starting up a 57 Chevy and smoke would come out the pipes. Either way, it's probably some type of computer flash that they will figure out.

I received a call from the service manager where my truck is (Roseville toyota) this morning after calling toyota directly yesterday. He believes my issue to be the vvti gear and is going to Change it out. I will update more as I hear from them.

The sound the all make at shut down is the aip totally normal. Mine has a noise during warm up that kinda sounds like that but not nearly as nasty and it takes a while to go away. Going to have to get it out.

I picked up my tundra today! I am very happy to have it back! They replaced the vvti gear on Thursday, had to wait for Friday morning to do a cold start to verify if noise was gone and wanted me to plan on picking it up today (Saturday) so they could verify noise was gone on two cold start ups. Had a hickup with the local dealer but was quickly resolved after talking with the service manager. After having a rental Camry and 4Runner I am very pleased to have the space and power back that I paid for. I will still be keeping a close ear out in the mornings to see if the noise comes back.

The sound from the glove box area is normal. It's the air injection pump.

Just playing devils advocate here... if the VVTI was causing it... any thought the noise was caused by piston slap since the vvti was keeping the valves open too long? If so, was everything replaced in the valvetrain that could have been damaged?

I'd be asking for an extended warranty at the cost of Toyota, personally, to make sure the aftermath doesn't show down the road...

Thy gave me a detailed explanation about it and it seemed pretty sound from how they explained it and my friend that used to teach at UTI. But something I could still try to get toyota to take care of. I am working a trd pro grill into the deal with local dealer due to the communication that was lacking on their end.

Go for the warranty... the pro grill can be installed at your leisure. But breaking down in 3 years because of this can't...

Anyway, To getting free shit
