One dude we worked with had the last name of Bates, so one guy at hotel checkin would always say to the clerk, im rooming with Master Bates

 

Yup, saw this on Reddit a few days ago. Sad situation. Surprisingly, wasn't as much blood in the front as I'd expected.

This was one of the top replies on the thread, too. Several people mentioned this, and the other comment about "wtf were they thinking using the ball?!"

The upshot to the tragedy is, everyone who sees this will likely never make the same mistake, so it should have a net-positive in the long run....

 

especially if they are walking DOWNHILL. But even flatground I don't understand. It's a mental challenge for me to walk while carrying a sk8board that's not broken. Still. And I'm old

It's not 'the step-side' I dislike. It's very specifically the back half of the first gen Tundra that I think is hideous. Somebody just dropped the ball in the design room and nobody bothered to pick it up. It's like it was rushed or someone lost a bet or it was a joke that never stopped being funny for someone, or.... I don’t know, but it didn't have to be so bad.

 

Yeah, it's almost like someone was trying to wax nostalgic on the 50s or 60s or something, going for that space ship vibe out back. It's really bad.

 

but the majority of 50's and 60's step-sides are good lookin trucks. I'll tell ya what happened.


This year is 1998. See, toyota had not yet figured out the taillights for the step-side. Meanwhile, Plymouth was amidst design of their 'Prowler', and said;
Plymouth guy #1 - meh, fuck it, lets go without taillights, or just baby ones to keep it legal.
Plymouth guy #2 - well what the hell we gonna do with all these fancy taillights?
Plymouth guy #3 - little birdie told me toyota forgot to design their step-side that is contracted to be a model of their new T150, and they're desperate to meet the deadline for release, we could offload the taillights to them and they can just design the truck around them.
So after a bit of negotiation, Toyota bought the lights and there you have it. That very same day, Toyota received a call from the lawyers over at Ford saying "T150? oh HELL nah! You best think up a different name!
And that's just how it all went down. It all checks out, this is a 2000 Plymouth Prowler with no taillights, now you know where they went

 

Not the trucks, the trucks looked awesome. The sedans. Maybe this helps.

 

Back to spindle gussets, Jason didn't love the TC ones which arrived yesterday, he says they are prone to cracking? But we have no better options elsewhere?

 

the way the TC Tacoma "no sway bar" ones do? I have the Tundra ones I need to weld on so wondering if more gusseting is needed like the Taco "keeps the sway bar" version has...

Cracking during welding or later? The welding process does take some care. And, they may need to be ground a tad for fitment, but they should be quite close.

 

From the thread linked above, sounds like flexing at different rates between gusset vs spindle?

 

I'm going with over heating the weld, making the gusset more brittle after a rapid cool.

They look good from here - Ask @Sunnier , she has TC and jumps the thing.

 

With the Taco gussets the sway bar version has an extra wing that connects from main upright section to the tie rod ear (the red line in the pic), where the non sway bar version did not so there was more force on the narrow bottom area. Looks like the Tundra version is the same so i will likely make a filler piece to bridge that gap when I do mine

As you may know, photos and video flatten out stuff. But there was a lot of fun. My very good friend who has a jimmy with low gears and front and rear TrueTrac, had no idea I would follow him so easy. This place was a lot of bumpy fire road, but the offshoots were legit. We made a point of taking the less beaten paths. I almost pissed myself when I was out filming and he damn near went to his side on a down hill. As @FrenchToasty pointed out, this was a case where the longer Ridgeline wheel base made it less "interesting" for me.

I haven’t heard of anyone I “know” having problems with TC. In fact, the opposite, it’s pretty much TC or Camburg when you’re ready to build a truck “right” , and a couple others when you need different angles, but @daveeasa, I’ve never heard of that one you just linked and compared to TC… I don’t trust ‘looks like’ and ‘built like’ to be the same. I think it’s really likely that welding (temperature) is the cause of cracking. I do jump Hulk (not really; I huck, but a good photographer can make it look like we’re flying), as do the guys in SGU and Bastrds, and I’ve not heard of TC’s cracking.
