Ah gotcha. The rear is a 2005 chevy 14b that has drum style parking brakes inside the rotors. Kinda a two-in-one thing from the factory.

It’s just a rotor with a giant hat pretty common concept on heavy(er) truck rear ends.

 

Tundra is the same way iirc. Actually I think anything with discs before the electronic parking brakes came out are that way.

 

Guess I'm not used to seeing e-brake shoes that big

 

'They really arent that big. Probably 8" in diameter.

 

Width-wise they look pretty good sized

It would have probably been faster. I will be making a high clearance prototype rear bumper with the help of Nathan at Trail Toys. Hopefully he will bring another option to the market for the 1st gen tundra guys.

 

I had to do some slicing and dicing of the grille guard tubes for it to open and close.

 

Nah. Just Nathan. He uses my shop to build his stuff.

 

A pic of the bumper and winch mounted. The weight settled the springs about an inch. It still a little nose high, but i think it will come down some once the springs settle some more.



Also been working on the bed floor for the 66 C10. This was by far the worst job to do. The entire damn thing bolts together with like 150 nuts/bolts. The wood floor is structural to the truck. It sucked. I couldnt have imagine doing it without a lift. I think it came out pretty good. The floor is oak with two coats of stain and 3 coats of water seal.

 

The tundra turned out great. The bed floor is sweet as well.

 

Thanks. I have a few more things to finish on the Tundra. Its getting tuned tomorrow morning, then rear bumper, camper shell, vinyl floor inside, etc.

 

Some updates:

I took the truck to get it tuned last Friday and it really woke it up. The driving manners are much improved as the ecu isnt trying to "learn" as much as it was out of the box. Fuel and timing tables adjusted and its much better now. Should also get improved mpg provided i can keep my foot out of it.

On the way home i noticed a slight vibration upon deceleration which was the drive shaft being about an inch too short. I knew this gong in, but was hoping it would be an issue. I ordered a new one from tom woods. When i got home i noticed oil all over the underside and tailgate of the truck. Turns out the seal and driveshaft slip yoke were bad and the transfer case leaked fluid everywhere while i was driving. At least its rust proofed now. Hopefully the new seal and slip yoke will fix the problem.

While i wait on parts, i started mocking up the prototype trail toys high clearance rear bumper. This bumper is meant for 2nd/3rd gen tundras so a little modification is required for ours 1st gen trucks. 1st the width is about 3" too wide per side. 2nd is the way our bumpers mount to the frame. The frame width is 34" on both generation of trucks so that helps. I came up with a new mounting plate that i will have drawn up in CAD and cut out of 3/4" plate. Once i get it mounted, ill start on the wings and cut the bottom of the bed. I plan on also adding a step to the bumper as well.


Note, the hitch mount is on backwards on this bumper. it was a mistake during assembly for a previous customer. Its the reason im using it for mockup/prototyping. It will still work just fine with some mods to the back side. As you can see i need to trim about 3" off each side so it lines up with the edge of the taillights.

Updates on the rear bumper. Its fully welded and painted. The plan is for Trail Toys to make a template and possibly offer it for FGT tundra owners. His 2nd gen tundra bumpers have options for single or dual swingouts.

I plan on controlling the lights with this Switch Pro knockoff.

 

Got that bumper on my 2016. Shit is tough AF and has not bent with all the drops I’ve landed on it.

 

Your jack stand on a picnic table bench makes me cringe in hopes it doesn't snap in half. lol. Love the ARB bumper! That's the style I would love to have. The Safari isn't a good look for our 1st Gen's.

 

LOL. Nah. Its made out of the sturdiest of high quality wood. If it can hold my fat ass up, it can hold up a 200lb bumper.
Thats the reason i went with the Tacoma ARB. The safari for our trucks gives it that big chin look.

 

The amount of work you have done to that truck is mind bottling!!!. Great stuff and looks amazing. One awesome rig!!

@the_white_shadow I’m setting up a Rubicon Trail run June 8-11 2023 for capable Tundras. I did the trail already this year so I know for a fact we can squeeze through. Got a buddy from Colorado in a 2.5 gen on 40s, and a 2.5 gen from Utah on 37s that are going. I invited another SASd 1st gen on 40s - he’s a maybe. Would like to extend the invitation to you.

Would probably camp at the Loon Lake entrance on the 7th and head out the next morning.

 

Thanks for the invite. Im a maybe as well. Next years offshore schedule may put a damper on my wheeling plans. Ive always wanted to do the Rubicon trail.

 

I drove it to work today. Does that count? It wont get much harder wheeling than that. I have other shitboxes to beat up.
