    Mornin!

This slowed my commute down this morning a few mins. Luckily I saw the traffic building pretty heavy a few exits back and got off in time to go around. Looks as though the barrier gives some so it lessens the blow. Anyone know if that's true?

Yes, those barriers are designed with crumple zones to absorb energy, hopefully saving lives. That looks like it was a bad one.

I kind of figured it was the same-ish affect as the old school barrels. They had a loader there shortly after that last pic with a chain, maybe pulling it back out but the helicopter left before I could see.
That's the second time someone has hit that spot, a few months ago a semi hit it which also shut down the highway.

Yes, they are designed to collapse and absorb the impact to reduce fatalities. Hit a solid concrete barrier head on at 70 and things get fucked up. But hit something more like an airbag and the outcome is (hopefully) less severe.
Other places you'll see the big yellow barrels - those are filled with water or glycol/water mixture (in places it freezes) to have a similar effect.
