Tundra Offroad Capability

Offroad capable...pffft.
That's one well maintained fire road

 

Let’s be real. The tundra isn’t any more capable than most other 4wd trucks. No locker, fake LSD, fake ATRAC, cuts power all the time, a hitch that drags on everything, can’t switch to 4L on the fly, needs a CMC just to fit 35’s… and the list goes on. Address some of these issues and learn how not to get in situations your truck can’t handle and it can be a very capable truck.

But what really makes it the best platform to build an off-road truck is it’s reliability. You just can’t upgrade reliability. Because I’m not driving out to the middle of the desert, hundreds of miles from civilization in a Ford.

 

I’m in the southeast and the trail width does seem to be the limiting factor for the trucks. Seeing the wide open trails out west I think the tundra would shine.

 

I am both deeply offended on behalf of my truck and in total agreement.

 

I can switch into 4wd on the fly. Not sure what that comment meant?

I know some Jeeps can. Gotta slow down to a crawl but don’t have to come to a complete stop and put it in Park.

 

They do pretty good. I don't have a locker, but I typically don't do a lot of crawling. With some solid suspension you can really carry some speed in the dirt with these things. Wheeling them is really where I first realized that they're decently manageable especially for the size. Gas tank skid and sliders are an absolute must, but other than that you can have a lot of fun if you get acclimated with the size of the truck. I had two 4runners prior to my tundra and I'd still prefer the tundra.

Broken arrow is one of my favorites. Enough to keep you engaged, but the views are amazing. When we finally got to devil's staircase it was completely dark out which made it interesting haha

 

That entirely depends on your definition and expectations of offroading and where you want to take if offroad. Its a modern vehicle with a lot of electronics, it's a full size vehicle, and it's sounds like you want to drive it on the road and use at as a pickup.

I live on the east coast so the trails are tight, body damage is inevitable on a fullsize 4wd. There is also a lot of mud here and the truck is heavy. It tends to sink like a rock. I avoid deep water during the wet season to avoid electrical issues. But ive taken it places many other people wouldnt and it's driven home on it's own everytime and ive had lots of fun with it.

It's probably the best 1/2 ton truck you can buy for light offroading. Strong drivetrain, steering, and brakes that can handle 35s easily, 37s with some care on factory parts.

 

I think I’ve talked myself into doing Black Bear Pass next summer. Did Mineral Creek this year and Imogene last year - both are just as epic as Broken Arrow.

In many ways an '85 toyota 4runner or a Geo tracker would run circles around my truck offroad but in many ways they cant. All depends on what you want. Tundra is a much better choice than an f150, ram 1500, or silverado 1500 for this job.

 

I'll second the body damage. It's really easy to get yourself into a predicament if you're not paying attention or if you're spotter doesn't know how to spot a full sized rig. Once you get used to the truck it's more about being ambitious than being able to fit lol.

I was supposed to go this month for Overland expo mountain west, but just wasn't in the cards. I really want to do black bear before it gets to a point where we can't.

 

Meh, too late lol. They wouldnt be sliding over any rocks anyway, maybe tree stumps and small children.

 

Hard to argue against this

 

Most people's defintion of offroading a fullsize on the east coast is doing donuts in a muddy field or going down a washed out gravel road to your favorite fishing spot. They wouldnt dare take it down a trail unless it was a dedicated wheelin rig.

 

None of my Jeeps could. Wrangler or Grand Cherokee. Every 4wd I’ve ever had, you had to stop and put the vehicle in neutral or park. Same as the Tundra.

 

Oh you're referring to the ol boys that pull their sxs on 22x14's and say they wheel their rigs cause they get them muddy haha

 

You mean the stanced trucks that would bend the shitty tierods on their silverado if they even thought about putting it in 4x4 and getting a whiff of wheel hop going? That aint mud, its road grime that gets spit all over the side of the truck everyday driving to their bartending job.

The same guys that put such large tires on their SXS to show off they would snap the axles like twigs if they beat on them at all, so they just drive from mudhole to mudhole along the trails blasting shitty music as loud as possible, getting drunk, and watching everyone else riding around on 20 year old honda atvs and jeep cherokees.

 

holy shit. I'm impressed. been down broken arrow many times but never considered bringing my TRD Pro Tundra down it.

 

The Tundra has a stock approach angle that even in 2022 is still impressive at 26.5". Most half ton 4x4 trucks aren't this good or even close.

Departure angle sucks...but it sucks in all pick ups as does break over angle.

Out side of the "super truck" segment like Raptor and TRX and whatever GM decides to do, Tundra is the better 4wd truck amongst all others.

The Ram Power Wagon is interesting and has good off road specs. The approach angle is 29 degrees vs 26.5 on Tundra. The Power Wagon is 3/4 ton. Some models/years came with factory winches.

I decided between Power Wagon and Tundra for a good 4wd truck that was an upgrade over a basic 4wd but not a $100K pick up.

I picked the Tundra because I'm a Toyota nerd and because like others said: I get sweaty palms thinking about going to remote areas in a Dodge (or Ford, or GM) truck.

 

I’d like to say that by putting in a rear locker solves your first three on the list, and you can put 35s without bmc/cmc with the right wheel specs. Just saying. But I do agree with you that the reliability can’t be upgraded.
