I have a 4wd 2004 access cab SR5 with 128k. The 4hi and 4low engage like butter but the shifting in 4low is very jolting from 1st to 2nd gear - it literally jumps forward. What could be the cause of this?

I have an 02 with 227,000 miles and it does the same thing. I just keep it in 1st gear so it won’t shift. Not sure if it’s normal:notsure:

My 2000 does the same thing. It's the nature of the ultra low gearing.

Same here as well. Normal as far as I know.

Shifts happen at low speed with high torque so it seems like the transmission is having to slow the engine down to the proper rotating speed thus jolting forward.

Normal. Keep the gear in low instead of drive when using 4wd low.

Thank you guys!! It definitely makes me feel better that it’s considered normal. I guess I never noticed this before (had 2nd gen - 2012 tundra 4 years ago).

My truck also does this. It’s kinda annoying shifting from 1 to 2. But 2 to 3 is smoother. I figured it was just the higher torque of gear 1. I don’t use 4low often since there ain’t anything in sc to off-road on so it’s not much of a problem.

It's good for pulling a boat off a slippery boat ramp IMO.

I've never needed 4 Lo, but I activate it several times a year just to exercise the system.
