Get a leaf that is the same length or just shorter and put it below another leaf. Report back.

I don't think AZ has a time change. Smart, but even so, It's the same time here. So whatever your watch says, mines currently the same.

Getting back on the nuts, I built packs for a 77 solid front and rear. If I had spare leafs and wanted to make adjustments today, I would. It's not rocket science and all suspension is trial and error.

Man, I can't wait 'til DST finally gets killed next year and we're all on the same page with AZ.

Hell yes!! There was a band, Give Me Danger, had a very similar style, organs and electric guitar, lead singer's tonality and delivery strangely alike. I don't think they ever made it and never put an album out but I always loved this song, despite how despicable and maniacal the topic.

There was a local (to me) band here that had the similar style that was one of those - pretty good recorded but live shows were on fire - bands. Great atmosphere at every show. Bummed when they broke. Here's some obvious Murder City influence- with harmonica to boot

Well maybe there is some science, but my experience is that nothing bolts in and does exactly what you expect....

Update on the bastards: knowing that the stock U-bolts weren't going to cut it, I went lookin for a longer set. Scored on Offerdeez with a 1" rear lift for a later Tundra for $20 right around the corner from me, which is just 1" blocks and longer bolts. There are many vehicles that use the same bolts, which is helpful to know when sourcing parts.
So, our stock leaf packs have 4 main parts. The main spring on top that wraps around the bushings on the ends, 2 intermediate leaf springs, and the big fat overload spring plate on the bottom. I first added the longer of the two intermediate springs from my extra pack to my stock pack on the truck, and reassembled. Drove it. Liked where it was goin, but it could use more, so I took it all back apart and added the other middle spring to the now bastardized pack on the truck. Amazing difference, not slammin bumpstops thru every dip, and raised the rear another 2'ish inches. That being said, I'm also now 2'ish inches closer to full extension of rear shocks at ride height, an issue that will need to be dealt with hopefully before disaster strikes. Left the bolts long because I still plan on playing with it. I'll probably cut the ends off the main spring from the donor pack, and add that to the bastard while removing one of the middle springs to see the difference. Definitely dont want anymore height, even tho the bolts I got with the rear block kit would allow for it. Those U-bolts will get cut when once I've decided I'm happy with everything. Bastard spring success in progress

Bastard packs are a great options, can tailor them for your needs and inexpensive. It used to be REALLY common when most the 4wd vehicles ran front and rear leaf springs.

I'm surprised how little info there is out there on bastard packs. I just wanted to learn how different leafs would affect the overall pack, without having to remove/change/reinstall so many times.

Well it used to be fairly normal, often done back in the 70s/80s. I was a jeep guy before Toyotas and running modified leafs for a couple inches of lift and increased capacity was common. And you can gain more flex for off roading, depending on how you set it up. Maybe you can find older articles from 4wheeler magazine online someplace, or any of the 4 wheel drive magazines from back in the day. If there are any forums for older leaf sprung jeeps, they may have info about it as well.

Much less common tactic today, as there are many choices for lifted leaf or custom springs for purchase. Modifying a truck or car is a much more "bolt" on process now, so many products, options, easy to purchase vs the time when there were few suspension companies. Back in the day if OME, Rancho or Superlift didnt make a kit, or if what they had didnt suit you....your only option was modding/building what you had from available parts.

There is info on the web, including vids about setting up bastard leaf packs.

Thanx, and I'm aware of most of all that, however, it doesn't answer my questions. The jeep forums are a good idea if thats all there is i guess. To be clear, what I'm after is an explanation of how specific leaf properties impact the overall performance of a pack. Like what would be the difference in end result between adding a 12" on the bottom, or adding a 34" to the top? (if they're the same width and thickness) I'm kicking myself for not taking any measurements nor pics while doing any of this

Good post and I think you've got a good start for sure. Is this with a camper shell on or any weight in the bed?

Yes camper shell, but it's only maybe 200 lbs. I also typically carry 300'ish lbs. of tools, regularly. maybe 400
It's also not uncommon for me to load 6-800 lbs. of materials for work

Mmm. Shortening the ends on the donor spring does sound like it would make sense in theory to bring the ride height down a notch. Wonder what it would do if you took out the overload and put the other intermediate spring there, or got another donor pack and used the same leaf except cut to a shorter length? Too bad @KarmaKannon ain't around to contribute. I believe he had a few posts in the past experimenting with this stuff.

Yeah I've still got some playin around to do, Ill be taking measurements from here on out. Also, I'm going to be doing something about the rear shocks, just wanted to figure out ride height before i start cutting and welding stuff. I see hammer hangers in my future as well
