Edited because I misread your comment:

Most of the people buying these cars at these prices are not fiscally responsible and by that I mean they cannot afford it over the life of the loan.

Repossessions increase, the used car market saturates, inventory sits on the lots and the dealers sell them for less than they paid at auction. It will eventually affect the new car market. It’s gonna be exciting and I have lots of popcorn.

The real reason manufacturers have been getting involved (see Ford/GM) is less to do looking pro consumer and more to do with financial loss in the long term.

This is counter intuitive to me, how are their quarterly earnings year over year? I’d guess Toyota manufacturing doesn’t get anything out of the dealer markups. I bet their margin is better off with high volume sales rather than low volume sales at a higher cost. As far I know they don’t charge the dealers more if there is scarcity just dealers charging consumer more.

As someone in a channel or post said, even though the car companies are trying publicly to put the kabosh on markups, financially they are not stopping them. Toyota and other car companies are as much banks as they are manufactures. They have no problems issuing that 90k loan for a marked up to hell TRD Pro Tundra.

I wonder if manufacturers are actually seeing a decline in overall sales though. Dealers with exorbitant markups have many MANY cars sitting on the lot because (hopefully) people are getting smarter and shopping elsewhere to try and pay MSRP. Hands down, a majority of dealers out there are charging a markup, MSRP dealers are few and far between.

Good point! Toyota financing is probably doing great with those loans. The auto loan market for sure is facing head winds, lots of defaults. So that can’t sustain forever

So of course they'll be pissed about dealers who are sitting on cars due to a markup.

Toyota sales are down due to the overall lack of being able to manufacture vehicles, not because cars are sitting on dealers lots.

Did check out Dick Hannah in Kelso? They are selling at MSRP with no dealer add on, plus free Limited Life Time warranty. I have a deposit in with them and Vancouver.

@breynolds here are July's numbers. I tend to agree that these numbers are mostly due to manufacturing issues that Toyota is facing. I know that TMNA will prioritize common parts, like computer chips, to vehicles most in demand, such as the new Tundra.

Have not checked with them yet. They are a bit farther away from me and I don’t think they are as big as Vancouver? I probably should give them a call though, thanks!

Performance Toyota in Fairfield,OH, just north of Cincinnatti:
No negotiation whatsoever. Take it or leave it with the following conditions for a Limited 4x4, Crew Max, 6.5ft bed, and virtually all packages other than TRD.
$5000 Markup over MSRP. No option and no quibbling. Them: "Don't like that? Go somewhere else, and good luck"
Will NOT reserve an incoming truck in transit unless you have a trade-in...PERIOD. No Cash deposit or other method to reserve an inbound.
WORST OF ALL...will NOT sell a new Tundra unless financed through Toyota Motor Financing...PERIOD! Will NOT sell on a cash basis or with outside financing.
Forced $1900 Toyota theft, plastic and cloth 7-year protection warranty. Can't buy without.

I can't find a Tundra anywhere close to the specs on my desired truck specs within a 200 mile radius, either currently on the lot or in-transit, so I was forced to submit or go lower with an SR5 build, and even then at a predatory price. They also Screen Shot 2022-08-03 at 12.36.46 PM.jpg gave me a crappy trade-in deal on my low mileage 2016 Scion iA, well below KBB valuation.

Sucks when you NEED a particular truck build NOW and can't wait for months to match at least the minimum build required. Sigh.... Truck arriving in next 10 days for pickup, if I have enough money left to pay for the gas to get to the dealership!

They can't do high volume because they are on extremely limited allocations from Toyota to dealers. That still doesn't excuse the grossly inflated, predatory price gouging.
I had to have the truck, which is very difficult to find, despite the price. That being said, I will NEVER do business with the same dealer in the future when things go back to what was normal pre-2020.

I am fortunately in a position where I’m in zero hurry for a new truck, however, I have a good memory and I’m almost pushed away from the brand. Between these dealer shenanigans and the new Tundra, quite frankly, not very impressive to me, I’ve entertained shopping elsewhere.

I’m fickle and rarely keep a vehicle long enough for reliability to matter so I’m ok with it.

This is exactly what I was implying. There is a difference between Toyota manufacturing and Toyota sales. The manufacturing company probably makes more on a high volume of production, which it cannot actually execute right now. As I understand it regardless of the current scarcity Toyota manufacturing still charges the same price to the dealers. The dealers are going crazy with markups because of the low production/inventory numbers. Some one else wisely pointed out that Toyota financing is probably just fine with the higher loan amounts, I think that’s a reasonable hypothesis but they also may have made more with the higher volume of loans, since I’m not working there it’s hard to know with out insider data.

Finally got to sit in one tho. Didn’t drive it. They asked. They definitely want my 21 LR but not enough. Haven’t driven the hybrid. Love the interior. I don’t care for the smaller squished windshield.

    Chance are that’s a NO.
We would also like to assume Toyota monitors/pay attention to these forums but that’s also just an assumption I would think.

…and then if they did they wouldn’t feel obligated to respond to any of our feedback, etc…if that were the case we may still have a V8 Option, diesel, HD and a ton of other things that people have wanted over the years :notsure:

You know what is unfortunate? I have been in contact with some MSRP dealers. But when it comes to specialized models like Pro or Capstone, those ethos go out the window and the promise of MSRP with it.

I got quoted $15999 ADM on a TRD Pro from a listed MSRP dealer on markups.org. Apparently they changed their policy on the Pro model in May, when they were making money on marked up used vehicles but not factory new cars.

I have been doing business with my local Toyota dealership for more than 20 years. They called me to ask if I am interested in trading my Tundra on a new one. I have been thinking about it but not interested in paying a markup. But I decided since they invited me I would go.
First of all, when I got there, they don't even have a Tundra in stock to sell me! They can order me one but will add $10,000 markup. My truck is worth $31k on KBB, they offered me $15k. Mind blown. Offered me more for trade after I called them out on it, but I will not do business with them.
I contacted the dealership at the next town over and they ordered me exactly what I wanted with no markup. Just straight MSRP. I have never paid MSRP in my life, always 10 to 12% under, but in this market I am okay, especially since they don't try to screw me.
    Now the wait starts....

It's what many dealerships continue to miss, I get they have bills to pay but when this time period passes - how many customers that they've screwed will return to buy a car or get service performed.

What dealership did you go to that is offering MSRP? I am looking to get a few of them together in FL as all the ones around me (Jacksonville) want 10-20k+ markup and arent budging. Thanks!

Courtesy Toyota in Brandon. I worked with Ez (Ezrahel Assad). He was very helpful. Just straight quote with MSRP, dealer fee, tax, tag&title etc. clearly detailed out. No additional markup.

Man that sucks. I live just north of there (Dayton) and bought a new Sienna from them back in 2016. Everything went great (of course pre supply chain issues). When I called back a few times (Mar-May) looking for a new Tundra they could never keep their story straight about what they required in order to purchase a Tundra. I was really disappointed. I will say out of 7 Toyota dealerships I have been in contact with this one and Jeff Wyler are the worst for sure. I have only found 2 Dealerships in the Dayton/Cinci area that don't require a trade in or outside financing. A few other local dealers are MSRP but require financing through Toyota, must have a trade in, and have some dealer installed addons. It's a tough market out there.
