Yeaaaa, I did my 2nd self oil change today.

I've been using fumoto valves for must be at least 15+ years on 4 or 5 vehicles, never had a problem. It's probably the first thing I do to a new vehicle I get. I just like the fact of not getting hot oil on me even with a gloved hand and always thinking in the back of my mind is today the day the oil pan threads strip out as I snug it down.

I also like the new MotivX filter wrench design with no 'notches' but do find it's kind of hard to take off once it's wedged on there. I find with the metal filter housing it's a lot easier to take on and off.

Do your own oil changes, be a man.

 

The packaging is different, but that is exactly how my MotivX tool works, and I love it. I also have the MotivX tool for draining the oil filter canister, but it doesn't drain every drop. There is always just a little bit of oil left in the canister when I remove it. Almost a perfectly clean oil change.

 

The Fumoto would be very hard to move and next to impossible with the clip installed. It’s overblown.

This new design may be great and I’ll definitely take a look at it.

I have really thought about getting the adapter to convert it to a regular type oil filter but I think all I would be gaining is a little bit of convenience and maybe a little more filter capacity?

I am also kinda old school and getting a little oil on my hands is part of the job. I hate that damn skid plate though.

My wifes Jeep Wrangler has the oil filter canister right on top of the engine and it is very little fuss or mess to take it out.

 

I always love the fumoto debate. Everyone that has one loves them and everyone that doesnt is scared they will open while driving. I don't have one but its more a, am i really that lazy that I can't unscrew a single bolt. Plus it drains faster removing the bolt than using a valve.

 

The skid plate removal and install does not bother me. I like to remove it and check to see if I have any leaks and check on condition of other parts while I'm down there. Also need to remove the plate to do coolant drain which I do every 3rd oil change.

Do you just drain the radiator or do you pull the brass plugs on engine too?

I just finished changing my oil and could not get it done without removing the Toyota POS skid plate. WHY WOULD THEY NOT PUT AN ACCESS HATCH FOR THE OIL FILTER?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

It was made more difficult because I have limited use of my right arm due to a torn rotator cuff, and I am right-handed. But it would still have been an easy oil change if not for that @#$&#@$% Toyota skid plate!

A lot of folks have bought the RCI skid plate and are happy with it. I hate to spend almost $400 just because of Toyota's stupidity. Some have cut holes and added hatches themselves but the plate has two layers of metal at that point and I'm not sure how that affects the rigidity/structural integrity of the plate.

 

I haven't tried putting anything back in there. That's exit only

 

Keep in mind, stock skid plate doesn't hold up to much in terms of strength since it's simple almost crush design. The TRD pro has a hatch. I'm yet to change mine with it (free ones still coming through dealer). Looking forward to seeing how beneficial it is

 

I have thought about cutting a door in my skid plate and then riveting a hinge and latch of some type on it. I am having a hard time justifying $350 for an after market skid plate.

 

I don't need that much in the way of strength. The offroading I do is mainly mud, grass, and the occasional small stump. And the TRD plate is over $500, while the RCI is under $400 without discounts. I could wait until Black Friday and get some kind of discount I'm sure.

 

I have a Fumoto. Today I changed my oil. I also changed my front diff, rear diff, transfer case and lubricated my prop shaft. Torqued prop shafts bolts. Checked chassis hardware. I probably did to much being that if I have a Fumoto it may mean I’m to lazy to spin some bolts.

 

I bought two Fumoto valves for the Tundra and 4runner. Will be installing them this Monday.

 

Lol see this is what every fumoto debate turns into, I do all the things you just listed too. I have nothing against the fumoto, I almost bought one, but then like I said, I just couldn't justify spending money just to not have to turn one bolt. Why not put a fumoto on the diffs and transfer case as well?

 

They aren’t made for that application. It’s not about being a lazy ass. It’s literally about making an oil change as clean and easy as it can get. The oil on a Tundra comes out with some serious force. It can make a hell of a mess. Running a tube to a transport container is as clean as I’ve ever made an oil change.
It’s not a Fumoto debate. I don't give a shit what people use and how they get it done. Insinuating a person is lazy for having a Fumoto is what I found ridiculous.

 

Btw, I used the new squeeze bottle gear oils. Sweetest damn thing in gear oil in a while. Clean and no pump needed. Give it a try if you feel like taking it easy.

 

Why can't they be used for draining other fluids besides engine oil? My comment was referring to myself, I said "am I really that lazy" not you or anyone else that has one. I think its a good thing that the oil flows out faster with force, less chance of anything sticking around on the bottom of the oil pan, on top of that the threads of the valve protrude into the pan so you get even less oil out. I like to keep things clean too, I haven't had an issue getting the oil into my pan and I use the motivx, wrench, funnel and filter drain. I have some of the bags of diff fluid but I still just put my pump in the bag, just find it easier than squeezing. Theres more than one way to get the same job done, I dont hate on the valves, I just personally dont see the need for myself, I change my oil twice a year, so I can deal with removing the drain plug.

 

I've made some monster messes with this truck. Comes out like a rocket even slightly warm. I've bought whatever needed to make my life easier & cleaner, since its routine maintenance and done every 5k miles. I have the RCI skid, metal filter canister, motivx tool and fumoto valve. Learned a few lessons along the way, each time it gets a little better.

 

We have been down the same path. I have the same setup. I just recently went back to the plastic canister because on two occasions I could bust the plug and the entire canister had to come down. Made quite a mess. Nobody else seems to have this problem though. My torques are 18/9. Maybe it’s because I’m not warming the oil enough.

 

Not a fun day. Haven't encountered that one yet, have you considered changing it up altogether? Baxter Performance, I go back and forth on considering it.

Edit: Not the most ideal swap when the current setup work just fine.

 

I haven’t. Just went back to plastic. I know there’s many that have went aftermarket and have been really happy.

EDIT. Looked up Baxter. That is some expensive filter upgrades.

 

I have the same MotivX kit and it works great, makes it simple and clean.

 

I have the same problem actually. Can't get the plug out of the metal housing. It could be just a heat and humidity issue but the mess pulling the housing wasn't fun. Considering going back to plastic as well on my next oil change.

 

I don't even bother with that little plug, just wear triple gloves (so I can take one off as it gets dirty between steps) and remove whole canister, yeah it drips but it would if I removed plug anyway. These are the least of my problems.

I really hate removing and replacing the skidpan, that could have been designed better.
