It is a little easier the second time and less nerve racking. The first time I did it I replaced the oil filter canister with an all metal one. This time I didn't have to use a 30 ft breaker bar to get it loose. I was also less worried about leaks, as once I looked how the canister goes on there is really nowhere for it to leak if it is put together correctly.

I am going to break the hell outa that front engine skid plate though. Getting it off is fairly easy but putting it back on just make me want to throw a wrench. I think next time I am going to cut the front hooks off the skid and put a couple studs and wing nuts and washers in place of the front two bolts.

Any suggestions on how to redo the back skid bolts and make them easier? I thought about long bolts and welding a couple nuts in the middle and having just the head of the bolt stick out past the skid plate. It might be easier to start them by hand that way?

Edit: I ended up using Royal Purple 5W-30 because they didn't have Mobile 1 ($44 for 5 quart jug) and I found a Mobile 1 canister filter.

Been there. Bought an RCI and sold my stock plate on here. I just bought Pennzoil 5w30 for $21 / 5 quart, on sale at meijer.

I grew tired of the skid plate removal and put a RCI one on. I feel it’s worth it since I plan on keeping the truck for a long time.

I personally never saw the problem/struggle of changing the oil and oil filter with the skid plate. Maybe just me.
Oil suggestion...you can buy a box of oil that has a bag inside it kinda like boxed wine. I buy the Mobil 1 through Walmart for about $50-60 and it comes with 12 qts and a little valve on it. Just a suggestion.

I got that same one and thought I was so smart, until I had to empty my oil pan back into the jug….. oh wait. I don’t have a jug

RCI skid plate and a Fumoto valve. You’ll actually enjoy changing your own oil.

the “cartridge” is on the bottom of the engine. Have to pull the skid plate to get to the plastic spin off cap. The cartridge filter is housed inside of it. My wife’s Jeep Grand Cherokee is the same way, except they wisely put the oil filter housing on the top of the motor. No less oil change that way.

Ok so it’s the same as out 4runner, rci skid and fumoto valve for the win, until you forget to change jugs halfway thru

Skid plate trick is to just unbolt it and let it hang, you dont actually have to remove it to get to the oil filter.

I almost bought that box and had the same worry, and then realized when I did the math that it was cheaper to by the jugs anyways.

I'm changing my oil tomorrow. Last time I put the MotivX kit on so this one should be a lot easier.

Around me, it's 50-55 for (2) 5qt jugs. Barely more you get 2 extra qts. I check the unit price each time I buy it and it's always cheaper for the boxed/bagged.

The Walmart I was at was $60 for the box and around $24 and change for the jugs so it was just slightly cheaper for the jugs per quart. For me to get the box it was have to be a decent amount cheaper since I like to have the jugs to put the oil back in. Can you funnel oil into the bag?

As mentioned the Futomo valve is a game changer as far as ease. It’s well worth the cost. I also swapped to the TRD skid plate with filter door.

Looks like a nice product but I’ll stick with Fumoto. If someone less annoying reviews it then I may consider it.

When I saw the Fumoto an alarm in my head went off about the valve "switch", when I watched this video he said the same thing about branches, rocks, etc. Yeah, I know there is a skid plate. The older I get, the fewer moving parts I want, (or have that work right ). I'm sure the Fumoto is probably perfectly fine, it IS Japanese after all.

Are you pretty happy with the fitment of the RCI skid plate? If I ever get some play money, I'm considering getting one.
