I have been interested in the baby duramax also. I have a buddy with one and he loves it and is getting great fuel mileage.

Firstly, I was referring to how much I drive. A 7mpg difference is not going to cost me $194/month. I don’t drive as much as you. I average 1350 miles per month at a combined 14mpg. This means my average fuel consumption is 96.4 gal/month. With 87 at an average of 2.70/gal (that’s at Sam’s Club, which is where I do most of my fill-ups), I spend roughly $260.28/month on fuel.

If I switch to the BabyMax and got a combined 20mpg, this means I would consume 67.5 gal/month. The cheapest diesel around me is 3.17/gal. This would cost me $213.98/month. This means I would spend thousands more for a new BabyMax to save $46.30/month on average in fuel. It’s even less of a difference than I had guessed. I like my truck too much to even consider it. I can see how it makes a difference for you if you drive high miles and do a lot of towing.

Secondly, looking at your chart, your GMC has a higher cost/mile than the Tundra. Is that solely due to the cost difference in fuel, or are there other factors (such as DEF costs)?

The cost per mile is only 1 cent. Fuel cost is associated with that for sure. The Duramax stays closely on par with the tundra because of its good fuel mileage even though gas is cheaper. The Duramax is able to make up for it with less fill ups and stretching it out further. You're right that if you don't drive much then the Duramax may not be the vehicle for you be it may surprise you that I only paid $45k for it. The SR5 will cost you that much.

I actually just calculated based on the fuel prices in my area. Tundra - 2336.99 gallons @2.89 = $6753.61
    GMC - 1530.74 gallons @3.09 = $4729.98
    Difference - $2023.62

Did they finally come to their senses and change that blank folding center console to one with actual storage and a lid? I think the Custom trim in 19 and 20 had no storage in the folding center console, which is mind boggling.

2019 was still the old body style. 2020 didn’t. They came to their senses and made it an actual center console starting on the 2021’s.

Just traded my 2020 2500 LT in last month (sadly) for a more family oriented hauler, but 1 year, 38,000 trouble free miles with 36,000 of those pulling our 30' travel trailer across 29 states, and that was one of the best vehicles I've owned (2017 Tundra SR5 CM > 2016 Sequoia Limited > Silverado 2500). Thing was bulletproof. I miss it and may buy another when the current vehicle market settles down. Only complaint is I wish it had the 10-speed.

I may have found my next set of wheels. Those look pretty good!

Are you one to keep vehicles more than 5 years? Research timing belt maintenance at 150K miles. Either the engine or transmission come out to perform that scheduled maintenance (back of engine between trans/block).

I’ve since just decided to just keep my 2500 until the wheels fall off. I don’t trust the build quality of half tons vs HD trucks.

This was a great thread, any updates? Love my2016 Tundra but I have towing needs for a HD. But I am just interested in how driving this big gasser compares to the 5.7 Tundra. I know the gearing is weaker with 3.73s. Does it suck off road?

Power is 400/465 I think off the top of my head. Torque comes on early and it’s a very flat curve unlike the high rpm tundra curve. I love mine and it actually gets a hair better mpg than the tundra. Not to mention my payload is 3,600lbs

If tuning for those ever becomes available and someone offers a supercharger for the 6.6 that would definitely be my next truck. The new tundras don’t seem like they were made with customers like me in mind.
