When I bought my truck, the dealer explained about the app for remote start and the other connected services. I declined it at the time after reading about how it transmits vehicle data and driving habits to Toyota. Call me paranoid, but I'm really not a fan of that. Honestly, the only reason I'd use the app is for remote start. I don't really care about any of the other stuff.

Anybody have thoughts on the app and how it tracks your truck? Worth it or not?

I have the app but opted out of the real time vehicle tracking within the app. I assume it’s no longer tracking my driving habits because I can’t see the data, but I also may be an idiot for assuming so. Ha.

As someone who works in Cyber Security those fears do have merit. Look at the consequences that they have that data. They know where you work? Where your home is? Patterns are everything in the information game. If a bad actor got a hold of that info it would be game over for most people. You could always cancel it and put in an aftermarket starter.

If you have a smart phone in your pocket and are worried about what Toyota may be tracking, I have some bad news for you. Smart phones track every aspect of your life. Who you talk to, what you are interested in, where you are going, where you have been, etc. It is not worth the concern IMO.

You could actually remote start without the app. Press the lock button 3 times on your key fob, and hold on the 3rd to start the truck. The only drawback is you have to be within range.

Like KClav said, I use the app still but just opted out of the tracking.

That's certainly part of my concern. I'm actually looking at the Viper remote start system. Seems to work the same way. Not sure how it will affect my warranty though. I'll have to research that a bit more.

My phone doesn't track my vehicle diagnostics or driving habits, both of which could be used to deny warranty or insurance coverage in the future. That's my biggest concern.

After the first year of free service I didn’t renew the app remote start. Durning year 1 I didn’t try to stop Toyota from tracking because I wanted to see the driver score. It was neat to see their BS score and to remember where I drove throughout those months.

I don’t care if they track my decoy vehicle, I have a burner car and phone for the banned stuff :spy:

I have the app, and yes, it tracks my trips and locations where I park. It says I'm an excellent driver (98%!), and offers me discounted vehicle insurance. I like the features.

Thanks, if we can just figure out how to make it stay running when open door we have done something.

Ok on the key fob I tried pressing lock 3 times and hold on the third and I got nothing and I was standing next to it. I tried both key fobs still nothing. What am I missing?

Try holding the 3rd press for at least 5 seconds? I have a SR5 and it works.

Ok I got it. It’s a little tricky on pressing the button. It’s nice to know I can still remote start it because I’m not paying for the app when the free year runs out.

That's a paid feature too, FYI.
