Seeking better rotors than factory

Living in California, we have our mountains. The factory rotors simply cannot absorb the heat generated. Everything is buttery smooth UNTIL rotors heat up, then the vehicle gets the wobbles and vibrations of distorted rotors. Shifting down, they cool and are buttery smooth again. Until, they heat up. Is there a HD brake kit with approximately another 1” diameter rotor and 50% more mass? Or, same diameter, but thicker, more massive? Knowing brakes convert the vehicle’s kinetic energy to heat, for sure this is the problem. If I was using the vehicle in Ohio, no sweat, but our daily drives include thousands of feet of elevation change- flat land brakes don’t work.

Dont fall for the aftermarket rotors though, they wont last nearly as long as the OEM ones, same with pads. Lots of great marketing out there for aftermarket pads and rotors but in the end they wear out faster and great more noise and dust. You want better braking you need to increase the size of them.

 

I just got back from a trip to Montana, towing a trailer, with no trailer brakes. The heat had me fighting the steering wheel coming into some valleys. I'm going to try Stoptech and hope for the best. It can't be much worse than OEM. I have less than 50,000 miles and live in FL, so I've never really done hills to heat warp my rotors, but here we are.

 

I have StopTech Sport slotted and Cryo treated on mine. Do not get the drilled, just slotted only. FL here too.

 

I also have the stoptech slotted rotors with ebc yellow pads and it’s the best brakes I’ve had. Stoptech makes a bbk kit too.

Norcal as well. My two friends and I had the vibrations and warped stock rotors. All went slotted as well and it is night and day.

 

I can't say enough good things about https://brakeperformance.com/ I put them on my SR5 3rd gen 4Runner with the 4.7 and they were awesome! I did the slotted and dimpled rotors with the upgraded ceramic pads and they were a huge improvement. Remember the 2003 SR5 with the V8 had little tiny rotors on the fronts. They would warp between oil changes. I could not warp the Brake Performance rotors and they were stock size. Believe me when I say I tried. I also think they have a lifetime no warp guarantee.

 

This is correct, first hand experience that the Alcon kit is NO JOKE. Also clears 17"s better than stock.

 

These are really the only “game changers” out there.

 

I use Bosch on all my own vehicles when its time to replace. No problems yet.

 

The OEM are easily warped. The brake performance rotors I had were so good that I would never consider stop tech or ecb. They stop in a hurry and are silky smooth. No hint of vibration. I have an 8 year old MB E350 with the factory drilled rotors that I use for work. Hit the brakes at any speed over 90 and they wobble horribly. They have been that way since I bought it 6 years ago. Not sure why I haven't fixed that yet? I will be replacing them soon as they are getting worse. Hit the brakes at speeds over 100 and it feels like the wheels are going to come off. You could do that to the 4runner all day long and would stop exactly the same over and over. I can't state how impressed I was with them. The only OEM rotors I have ever been impressed with are the ones on my wifes Audi SQ5.

Did you get them on all four corners or just the front?

Sweet! I see they only recommend the front kit for vehicles 4800kg or below. I was wondering what would be the issue with getting all four corners done, apparently none!

 

None at all. The thing is wild how powerful it stops. By far the most impressive thing on the truck. Im doing the same kit when the time comes

 

After fighting the "hot wobble" for years I bought new rotors from AutoZone along with new pads and haven't looked back since. Wobble gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So basically slotted are best to prevent warped rotors? My slotted + drilled warped. I think I’ll probably just get slotted next.

wow, how did you manage to go 76k without changing your brakes. I did my first brakes around 20kish.

I changed front pads around 60k miles. They were glazed and making some noise on application - still a good chunk of pad left. Left the rotors. I never have rotors turned - either leave them or scrap them IMO.

I learned to drive on a 68 Jeep - using the brakes was the equivalent of dragging your boot on the ground so I’ve always been easy on cars that have brakes that actually work.
