I think all manufacturers are claiming their cars can go further on less maintenance as a selling point (BMW "free" 15k interval oil changes.

They gave that with new purchases claiming their cars could go that long. Technically they "can" and it's fine for the leasee or person that trades their cars in every 3-5 years but not so much after the warranty ends and some sucker buys the sludge monsters.

How often was the oil changed in the million mile Tundra?

Another oil thread. These are fun like towing threads. I’ll be the counterpoint here. I’ve done 10k mile oil change intervals in every vehicle I’ve owned since synthetic became readily available. I’ve never had an engine failure, or a car that burnt oil. Or any issues whatsoever. When I changed the valve cover gaskets at 212k miles on the 2000 Tundra the valve train was shiny and silver. Not that burnt brown orange color you normally see.

I watched that video last night. Car Care Nut needs to disassemble a bunch of 3UR-FEs with over 200k miles on them and see what the oil control rings look like (wishful thinking I know). His oil change recommendations only really apply to that specific engine (I forget the model number). Technically, I don't think that you can accurately extrapolate what's seen with that Camry engine to... well, really any other engine without actually examining a number of examples of that other engine. Years ago Toyota had two 3.0L V6s, one in the Hilux and a very different one in the Camry/Sienna. They each had their own unique issues.

I used to be an Amsoil guy. I still use it in diffs, TC, and for my frame protectant. But I stopped using it for engine oil. Start listening at 2:30 in this video below. He talks about how gas engines leak some fuel into the oil. Doesn’t matter what kind of oil it is. If you’re going longer than 6 months between changes, this is happening regardless of which oil you use.

Here's an example from my supercharged Tacoma - I was using Mobil 1 full synthetic and did Blackstone Lab oil analysis on 5000, 7500, 10,000 mile oil changes. All of them came back saying I could go longer interval oil changes. The 10,000 mile oil change was done after 15 months and the oil report showed mimimal wear and lots of TBN and oil life left. Mostly stop and go city driving. They recommended a 15,000 mile interval but decided to just change oil once a year since I only averaged about 7000 miles a year.

My supervisor worked for Exxon Mobile at a plant that produces mobile 1 oil for 15 years and he preaches that if you run full synthetic and you change your oil at anything less than 6k miles you're just wasting money. He claims that some of the oldtimers would fill up jugs straight from some of the plants tanks and that they would only change their oil once a year, sometimes putting 20k - 30k on their vehicles between oil changes. My F-150 company truck's computer is set to 7,500 before the maintenance light comes on and our fleet department wont let us service anything before that.

I'm a over do it kind of guy so run mobile 1 synthetic on my personal vehicles and change ever 5k miles. Around 120k on my 2016 and plan on driving it until the wheels fall off.

Using miles to determine oil change frequency is a bit archaic. More accurate would be engine hours. Even more accurate would be engine hours x RPM average. Even more accurate would be number or cylinder detonations. Maybe the new computers can come up with a better way to judge engine oil life than miles driven. 5,000 miles of stop and go is wildly different than 5,000 miles of highway driving.

Thinking about the coking behind the oil control ring I believe that's more of an oil brand issue than time between oil changes.

Would you accept total fuel injector duration per unit time equals engine output equals load placed on lubricant?

My first car with an oil change reminder was a Honda. The dealer said total engine revolutions, engine temperatures, miles traveled and I thought this was odd coming from a salesman, the computer compared RPM, temps and oil pressure to measure viscosity. I wanted to ask him what would happen if I used 20w50 but didn't think being a smart ass would contribute to the conversation.
I will add that when we first bought the new 124 most driving was spirited back road playing the Stig but later the car was used for mostly highways. The miles between oil change alarms went up about 1,500 miles so modern engines do appear to track more than just miles.

Some people waste money at Starbucks, some on booze or other things. I don’t mind “wasting money” on engine oil.

Engine oil threads are always fun!

If we can graph it against average engine temp, yes.

…which is different from 5000 miles of a combination of city and highway driving with hours of idling every day in between (like a contractor’s truck or fleet vehicle).

I get what you’re saying, but this is probably why the benchmark is 5K miles or 6months, whichever comes first, and not something longer. It works for everyone, even if many could go longer without issue.

Lowest common denominator. None of my vehicles see “severe duty”. Which is high dust areas, frequent stop and go driving, or frequent heavy towing. They’re all city / hey driven vehicles that are commuters. “Severe duty” should have a more frequent maintenance program.

My Mustang has a computer that works this way to figure the 'oil life'

I do a 5K oil, 10K filter regimen and use high quality filters. Easy to remember the timeline and mileage. I have gone under and changed over on occasion.

I just bought the Extended Performance Synthetic from Castrol and Valvoline, not sure what I am going to use in the Tundra or the Bullitt, I run 5W30 in both. My current job is in walking distance to my office, so only weekend driving, is going to be great on my wallet and gas budget. I just changed my oil in the Tundra with my last stash of Penzoil Platinum, and it is fine. For whatever reason, I like to rotate through and try new oils, so next up is the Valvoline or Castrol as I got both on a sale for about $23 for the 5 quart jug.

I used to use Valvoline exclusively, and Castrol back in the day, but moved to AMSOIL, Motul, and Liquimoly, and then back to Pennzoil. I have NEVER had an oil related engine issue, and taken many cars/jeeps over 200K. Current oldest in the fleet is the 190K mile Jeep Commander with the 4.7. Motor runs as new, and not a drop burned.

I'm only at 70K on the Tundra after 5 years, and plan to keep the truck as long as I can drive. It too does not burn any oil.

For whatever reason, I have one of the noisier VVT systems, and the thing has made a racket from day 1. Never gotten better, never worse, with the exception of 5W30 quieting it down some. Ceratec helped, but it is just noisy, and coincidentally, my 2020 Mustang Bullitt with a similar DOHC dual VVT makes some racket, but NOT what the Tundra does, especially at light and off throttle situations. I keep hoping that one of these oils will make the motor say ahhhhhh. So far, the Mobil1 and AMSOIL were the worst of the lot.

You're not using the Amsoil with all of the signatures on it. Must have signatures.

I never liked the idea of a 10k oil change. Ive been draining my oil at 5k topping off and changing filter at 10k in our toyotas. I feel like filter would be ok for 10k if they suggest a 10k change.

I've been changing oil at 10k intervals or 1 year, whichever came first. It often alternated one way and another. My oil was always 0w20mobil1syn. Engine runs same as new, I am getting identical mileage 12 years later, and i am not burning oil. My miles are mixed highway and city. Half of it was flying, other half socar.

I have no real contribution here in regards to being a SME but I can tell you our fleet mechanic is extremely anal about changing the oil in our ambulances every 3k which is about every 6 weeks or so. We drive the living you know what out of them, they idle for hours, run 24/7 for the most part, 100+ degree summers, etc. He uses bulk non synthetic oil and we get hella good life out of them. We currently have 7 ambulances with over 300k on the original engines 2 of which are about to hit 400k. We have a Ford fleet contract if anyone is wondering what type of engine I'm talking it's the 6.7L V-10 gas engine. Since they stopped making the E350 ambulance we swapped over to the Transit van with the 3.5L V6 and we currently have 5 of those already over 100k. Long story short is that short OCIs definitely does wonders.

Always 5k oil changes. Anything less is unproven and could be bad for the long term longevity of the engine

You should change your oil every year regardless of the mileage. Oil brakes down no matter the use.

Thanks for sharing this video. It's very informative and has me believing that going back to 5K intervals is a good idea and really cost effective over the life of our engines.

Oil gets changed at 5000 miles. Tires are rotated at the same time. I've been "wasting" money on Amsoil products for decades. Wife's old 2004 Pilot has 367,000 miles with original Engine, Transmission and Radiator. I've been wasting money on Amsoil products on it since new!:DResized_20200219_140147(1).jpg

I’ve never been able to allow oil to go past 5000 miles. Ever. I grew up on the 3000 mile interval, so 5k was extreme to me. If a person is so poor they can’t spend the money to change the oil, then I hope their situation changes before things fall apart. For the tight-asses and cheap skates who think they’re “being frugal” and “wise” with their money deserve what they get. Unfortunately, these are the same people who will whine and cry about quality when their vehicle dies at 150,000 miles.
Toyota is in the car business to sell cars. They have enough integrity to make a quality vehicle that will outlast most others if properly cared for. Even under the “recommended” interval, Toyotas will outlast most others. As the man in the video said, it’s marketing and specsmanship.
To everyone, do what you want, it’s your truck. However, get off the soap boxes about spending money. $300 a year in oil changes will prevent thousands spent later down the road.
