I've had this annoying issue since February. Just had the ECU recall reflash and no change. This issue feels like a toque converter or transmission error not an engine failure to me. Been restoring old cars for years and the Tundra feels like a vehicle low on transmission fluid when the hesitation issue happens.

Agree on this. Something is not right - Couple of issues developing now at 6500 Miles.

    • Major throttle lag from a stop. Random, at times gone and other time clearly noticeable. Extremely bad on cold morning starts until truck warms up.
    • Under mild acceleration, the engine surges like the Torque Converter slipping more. You feel it and hear it in the exhaust.

I also think it feels like a torque converter symptom. Had a similar issue with an F150.

Agree and have experienced the same. Adding to this, we sometimes feel a subtle pulsing at low speeds around our neighborhood and attribute that to the torque converter, too.

Rolling stops and hills are kryptonite to my truck. Hills make the lag/surge occur more often or at least make it more noticeable. And the throttle lag is definitely more likely, if not exclusive, to acceleration from low gears.

Also have the transmission clank shifting into reverse from park, but not all the time. Happens about 50% of the time and the clank is accompanied by a small lunge into reverse.

I’ve experienced the lag, but mine improved on flat ground after a few miles of driving. The incline lag is still noticeable. Not sure it’s the same as what you guys are experiencing though.

I know this isn’t the solution, but try the Tow/Haul mode when climbing an incline from stop. For me, this makes the low end a lot more consistent and controlled. If the sport mode was tuned to have this low end response, it would be perfect, IMO.

I haven’t taken the truck in for updates, so maybe that will help with my lag on incline.

That pause in acceleration is your ecu calling the EPA requesting permission to accelerate. Thank you Obama era….

Just dropped mine off for the 5K check-in, recall, and to address some issues, with the throttle lag being at the top of the list.
I printed off that Service Campaign posted before (thanks for posting that!), the L67. I hoping that fixes it. If this issue were rectified I would absolutely love the truck...still love it, but this is a major issue, imo.

I will know more later today, and update the thread. Fingers crossed!

It's not low on tranny fluid. It's low on cylinders - two are missing.

Clunk shifting from park into reverse happens because when you park on slight incline without handbrake and vehicle rolls slightly after shifting into P. If you want silky smooth shift from park, you can do this:

When arriving home, shift to N, apply handbrake, release brake pedal and shift into P. Next time you go for a ride, shifting out of park will be ultra smooth.

All cars I've driven had clunky or hard shifting when you are on slight(or moderate) incline and shift out of P without doing handbrake. (Toyo venza, tundra, chevy2500, GMC safari, ect..)

Thanks for this information. It does this when it's parked level. Also, know other car is 20 RAV4 TRD. No Noise. That said, I will give it a try.

My experience so far is the Tundra is a much better road and ride compared to my past 4Runners. Very happy with current MPG and the power band. Family has multiple 2nd Generation Tundra's used in business. The 3rd Generation is leaps and bounds better on the road. It will not be a 4Runner for off the road-my last one was a 17 TRD Pro. A beast and mountain climber for sure. In the end, I use it for running improved trails where the Tundra meets those requirements with so much more payload and towing capacity. IMO

I have a transmission clunk when first starting the truck 85% of the time, if not all the time (I'm not keeping count). Truck is with Toyota today and that was something I mentioned to them. If I get any info back I will certainly relay.

Tonight, lifted the front of the truck and dropped the Cat Guard and Front skid plate. Focused on area where the two plates sandwiched together on the frame. There were some polished areas indicating rubbing. For sure, there is some chassis flex that is normal. My thinking is the initial start and shift into reverse puts more torque this area resulting in the clanking noise. Tapping with a rubber mallet seemed to duplicate sound. I also noticed the front TRD skid plate not exactly squared but slightly pinched. I reset everything in place and put small rubber strips in the overlay area between the frame and two plates. Started up taking down off blocks and all seemed ok. Will watch and see over next several days

I'm not sure if anyone has mentionned this for the lag but could it be because of traction control being off? I've noticed if I take the traction control off, my acceleration is not as laggy. Normal mode or sport mode.

Let me know if anyone else feels the same or if it's just in my head.

I did get that lag and almost got hit by incomimg traffic a few momths ago. I couldn't believe it.

Very interesting thought here... I will test this later today when I pick up my Tundra from the dealership.
On my road driving away from my house there is a spot that engages the traction control almost every time, depending on the speed I hit the curve and upslope at. It essentially kills the throttle/acceleration of the truck, and after a few seconds I can accelerate normally. So you could be on to something.

The good news is little thoughts like this are easy to test. The throttle lag is quite obvious and easy to replicate during a normal drive.

Gave this a shot and, unfortunately, no difference for me.

On a side note, today is one of the 50/50 'good days' the transmission doesn't clunk into reverse. Realized I had never tried replicating the clunk in the same drive, so went from park to reverse a number of times. Couldn't replicate it at will, every shift was good.

Dealership update on my Tundra that was in for service...

In regard to the throttle/acceleration lag, I gave them the service message that was posted by another member the other day, and also described the issue to the tech.
The lady who called today on behalf of my tech told me they could not apply that to my truck as my VIN was not calling for it.
When I got pick it up I will really communicate the issue thoroughly to my tech, and have them make note to hopefully relay that to Toyota to continue shedding light on this.

Based on that conversation it does not seem like they spent much time on this as they probably don't think it's an actual issue. I will get clarification when I grab it in a few hours.

The unfortunate thing with this issue is that some dealerships have potentially seen it first hand, or had multiple owners complain about it during service - I'm guessing that's why some members mention their dealership saying 'Toyota is releasing a fix.'. My dealership has obviously not had those experiences, and likely didn't even contact Toyota directly to ask about it.
To me this means it will unfortunately take quite sometime for Toyota to either release an update to address this, if they are actually working on one, or get enough consistent complaints about it to then expedite an update to fix it. I think the more people that take their truck in and make note of this the quicker it will happen. I'm guessing a lot of people are coming up on the 5K mark and they should relay this info to their dealership.

I doubt we see a fix for a while.

For those interested in the transmission clunk; they said its the electronics activating, and it's normal. They compared to another '22 and said it happened on it too.
For clarification, I did not say this happened during shifting, just when turning the truck on.

I only mentioned the truck turning on and it clunking. I'm not sure if I have that same clunk, but I will definitely pay attention now.
I'm guessing they would have given me the same answer if I described it happening when going into reverse... Normal, electronics and blah blah activating.

I'm having the same lag/surge issue with my '22 Tundra. This is my first Toyota, after going through issues with the other manufacturers. I expected Toyota to be better than this. It's a dangerous defect.

Nope. There was a software update recall service completed on my truck, but it had no effect on this defect.

The hesitation from a dead stop is terrible. The dealer has looked at it twice and tells me it’s turbo lag and normal. I find this hard to believe. Trying to pull out into traffic, step on the gas and for 5 seconds nothing happens then suddenly the truck surges.
    Anyone else experience this.

The last recall was supposed to address this. Did you get the ECU recall done?

The only time I EVER experience any turbo lag is if I take off right away on a cold start. After the first stop sign on the corner exiting by neighborhood it seems to lag after that’s I never have issues

Dropped off the truck today to the dealer. Have this same lag issue. Told them about it and the person there said they have heard of it before. But she said she doesn’t think they have anything to fix it as of yet.

Def don’t have that issue… mine will lite the tires pretty much instantly from a dead stop… no waiting for it to think about going.. and that just in normal mode.. put it in Tow + without a trailer on and look out

Yeah, the opposite is true for me - in fact, the truck shoots from the line. Before my Gen-3, I had an Audi A4 and it had terrible T-lag. So much so, the truck gave me a polite “slow down” message in my first week as I accelerated too quickly from the light and came up on the car in front. Ha.

I test drove one that had a little turbo lag. It still spun tires a little. Took several car lengths before it started pulling good. Hybrid has no lag whatsoever.
